trex-de Posted April 25, 2015 #2 Share Posted April 25, 2015 Good choice to stay on the ship. One of the worst ports we have ever stopped. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
zqvol Posted April 25, 2015 #3 Share Posted April 25, 2015 Contemplating staying on the ship (Sky) in Freeport. What is open or going on on the ship while in Freeport? The shops and casino are closed pretty much everything else is open just like on a sea day. There may not be as many activities going on but there are always some things happening. The spa is open and often runs specials. The gym is available as well as a much less crowded pool area.

gwsster Posted April 25, 2015 #5 Share Posted April 25, 2015 Stay on the boat, worst port ever! We did a planned excursion and ran back to the boat as soon as possible. The people clinging to you and grabbing at you was horrible. Won't go back.
pls5286 Posted April 25, 2015 #6 Share Posted April 25, 2015 I am going to Freeport in June. I was there about 2 yrs ago. My DF has never been. Has it really gotten that bad at Freeport now? When I was there I did a bus tour of the city and it was ok. I just want my DF to get the best out of the cruise.
trex-de Posted April 25, 2015 #7 Share Posted April 25, 2015 We did a Jeep tour. Was disappointed. We expected more from the Bahamas. Converted cargo port and it shows. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
triptolemus Posted April 25, 2015 #8 Share Posted April 25, 2015 (edited) Sounds like a perfect day to stay on the ship and put some miles on that UBP... think pool day, frozen drinks, and snacks snacks snacks... RuthlessBoss Posted April 25, 2015 #9 Share Posted April 25, 2015 I am going to Freeport in June. I was there about 2 yrs ago. My DF has never been. Has it really gotten that bad at Freeport now? When I was there I did a bus tour of the city and it was ok. I just want my DF to get the best out of the cruise. I feel the dock area has really improved over what it used to be. I actually prefer it over nasty Nassau. I always take a cab over to Lucaya, browse a little in the shops. The straw market part drives me to the point of getting snappy with most of the venders. Then I cross the street to give my money to the nice casino there. There's a beach there too, if that's what you enjoy.
AEckhardt Posted April 25, 2015 #10 Share Posted April 25, 2015 I just have to say I had the BEST (hands down!) tour EVER in Freeport and I tell EVERYONE I come across going to Freeport about it! If you are in decent health with decent mobility, check out Calabash Eco Tours! Shamie is the owner, born and raised in the Grand Bahamas island. He is extremely knowledgeable about the history and the biology of his island, and is one of 4 people on the island licensed to take you into the Blue Holes throughout the island. He has a solid 5 star rating on tripadvisor and will not take payment until the end of the tour and he knows you are happy, which we were beyond happy!! If I ever stop at that island again, I will be rushing to meet him and go off adventuring! Lucaya National Park is beautiful and the beaches there are perfection! The issue seems to be that the port is a fair distance away from the beauty of the island, being closer to the industry side. Once you get beyond that, it is paradise. newmexicoNita Posted April 25, 2015 #11 Share Posted April 25, 2015 there are mant ports we choose to stay on board when we visit.Usually at least once every cruise. we enjoy the use of the not so crowded pool and lounges, discounts on the spa, usually a movie is shown and sometimes there are special games for those who choose not to get off the ship. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Can you honestly say that ANY port is attractive and doesn't have the commercial ship things there? All those containers you see are filled with cargo we need through the U.S, I watched those containers being shuffled around non stop. Looks like something out of Star Wars. MisterFidgetpants Posted April 26, 2015 Author #13 Share Posted April 26, 2015 We live right near the beach, and GSC will be a beach day, so not in a rush to pay for a beach day at Freeport. Nature tours are interesting. Will look more into some suggestions here. Also have found the Bahamian Brewery looks nearby to the ship, short tour, pretty inexpensive and we could have the ship to "ourselves" most of the day. Have never been to Freeport but didn't look too exciting. Seems like a good day to chill out and be lazy onboard. Plenty of time to decide. Am up for hearing other ideas in Freeport. NCL excursions don't offer much.
e150club Posted April 26, 2015 #14 Share Posted April 26, 2015 For anyone that hasn't been to Freeport in many years, They moved the container term. {brand new] and built new shops and bars at the cruise ship pier. We had a good time at Senoir [sp] Frogs. I don't do beaches or many excursions but some of our group did and enjoyed their day. They spent lots of $$$$ to fix up the place. emcelh Posted April 26, 2015 #16 Share Posted April 26, 2015 (edited) Been there 3 times, most recently about 2 weeks ago. We've always taken a taxi to Port Lucaya, walked around the shops there, had lunch, visited the small casino. It's not the greatest but not as bad as some describe either. OCruisers Posted April 26, 2015 #17 Share Posted April 26, 2015 As others have mentioned, the Freeport cruise port area is way better than it use to be. Senor Frogs is fun if you're into that sort of thing! :D LuLu
MisterFidgetpants Posted April 27, 2015 Author #18 Share Posted April 27, 2015 We will probably get off to walk the immediate port area for a few minutes just so we can say "Been there, done that." Have the Ultimate Beverage Plan, so not interested to go to a bar off the ship. We don't do many short cruises, so we miss having a sea day. Freeport seems like the best day to "make a sea day". Does anyone have the Daily Newsletter, whatever NCL calls their version, for a Freeport day just so I can get an idea of open venues and activities? ldlewis45 Posted April 27, 2015 #19 Share Posted April 27, 2015 Freeport is not the worst port, but you definitely have to make an effort there, whereas other ports you can just get off the ship and go do whatever. My favorite excursion when I went to Freeport was a kayaking excursion. Very fun, if you're into that sort of thing.
