New England cruise excursions on your own

Traveling on RC this August. Was wondering if when you get off at each port there are locals to show you around. We did that on our Carribean cruise and it was much cheaper than booking directly from cruise line. Thanks

There may be people there offering private tours but it is better to book ahead.

Boston is definitely a DYI port. Many folks do the Hoho trolleys, Freedom Trail, Duck Tour, Boston Common, Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market, North End, etc. There is good public transit to get you to the downtown area. Walking is the way to get around downtown. The streets are narrow - the trolleys can get close to some points of interest, but they can't actually drive by. Big tour buses just don't work downtown.

Further afield there is Harvard Square, Fenway Park, JFK Museum, and Sam Adams Brewery.

The Freedom Trail is part of the National Park System and they offer guided walking tours for a fee. You can also just pick up a Freedom Trail map and do it yourself for free.

DIY booking for excursions is generally cheaper than booking from the cruise lines, and there are many third party tour operators there, but you won't find the "entrepreneurs" standing around the pier offering private tours.
