Our Cruise on the QM2 is Dec.2-9th...

my husband is already planning on hitting the bars.

In YOUR opinion which bar was your favorite and why?

And did you have a special drink that we should definitely try while there?

thanks for your suggestions!

We primarily spent our time in the Commodore club (LOVE Paul) at night, and the Golden Lion for the Pub Trivia. Although I will say that the bartender (Whose name I did NOT note) in the Chart Room made FINE mojitos!

In fact, Try the mojitos anywhere. They do a marvelous job of them!

But Commodore club at night is THE place to be.

Never managed to make it into the Veuve Cliquot. It's on my list for this time (Heck, never even knew the Boardwalk cafe existed! I guess you can tell my priorities!) V.C. looks so bland. But I will have to try some at it's own bar. Just strikes me as too commercial. naming the bar after the champagne.

So Commodore, Commodore, and Commodore are my top three choices (in that order!)

Karie,

who preferes the Commodore!

Here's another vote for the Commodore Club. It's just such an elegant space, day or night.

If you're Grilling, the Queens Grill Lounge (now open to PGers as well as QGers) is great for an aperitif.

The CC, the QGL, and all the other bars are also WiFi hotpots.

My favourite most of the time was the Golden Lion Pub. I found it so relaxing and unpretentious. The Pub Trivia and Karaoke were right up our street! I liked the Chart Room but it got really busy before dinner on our Transatlantic Crossing. The Mark Hodgson Jazz Trio were good but the lack of Sax was a problem ;) we didn't try the Commodore Club as I thought it might be a bit too "posh" for us, being next to the Queen Grill suites and away from the rest of the public rooms (probably a good thing in retrospect). But after the great comments here I would go there when we sail on QM2 again.

As someone who never has been on the ship but will be - hi Debbie, my fellow Dec 2 traveller - I'm interested in the Commodore Club and despite the news that its almost overlooked and Karie's recent description - the Veuve Cliquot Champagne Bar. Ok the first for the surrounding and the people and the latter for - well champagne, nectar of the gods! If no one else shows up the more champagne there is for me! I hear the Chart Room is overcrowded and hard to get into. Ohhh, and definitely one day (or more) in the Golden Lion Pub for lunch and - gasp, trivia! Sorry Penny, who may be lurking out there somewhere. Not everyone hates trivia! he he he!

Ok David...you caught me lurking...and since we already saw how bad I am at trivia from Maria's little test, it's pretty obvious why I dislike it so...I'm hopeless!! But I'll come and cheer you all on.

Hi Debbie...here's some more of the Dec 2nd crew...and my vote is going to the Commodore club...anytime I can look out over the bow and watch the ship meet the sea it's my kind of place. Now don't get me wrong, all the others sound like they have their charms too, and even tho I'm a "cheap date" (inside Dec 2nd roll call joke folks) I plan to sample them all. How else might we decide which is superior?? And we have 7 days to do that!!! :D

Cheers, Penny

Thanks everyone!

The commodore Club has it and all the others are coming in second. I'm with Penny...literally....we just might have to try them ALL!!!

David, my husband will be with you and Trivia! LOVES it! Penny, you and I will be at the other bars at that point!

Anyone else have a bar that hasn't been mentioned?

And fill me in on "why" you like it if you will.....just gives me reason to try to visit them all on the first day on the ship!

thanks....keep the bars flowing!

I found the Commodore Club to have more personable servers as well. I think the layout of the room encourages that sort of atmosphere.

The Chart Room is located just outside Britannia and has great music for pre-dinner cocktails. And the passengers parade through the long room in all their finery as they head for the dining room (and/or search for a scarce availalbe chair). It is a treat to secure one of the couches with friends or family and watch the parade over drinks and jazz. It really is *the* place to go at least once on a crossing before dinner because of everything it has going for it. But since the Chart Room is typically difficult to find a seat, we almost always went to the Commodore Club for pre-dinner cocktails - which is great in its own way.

One place I would not recommend for pre-dinner cocktails is Sir Samuels. If you parade through the cheerful, jazzy Chart Room looking for a seat, only to end up in Sir Samuels, it feels like you just got parked in some consolation prize bar. Even though it is just across the center passageway, it is world's away in ambience.

Our first night (January third- No it was the second night) It was a definite "E" ticket ride! If you are old enough to remember "E" tickets, you have either been to Disney Land or Disney world, when it was young.

That second night out, we were in the mid Atlantic after a storm. We were moving right along to make up for a late start and to get further into the tropics. The bow rose up and down, her bosom heaving, if you will!

It was fun to watch people poised over their drinks, waiting for them to slosh into their mouths!

Okay, sure I jest! But it was fun. for those of us who love the ride.

And I've already told you about Paul!!

Karie,

who would like to take Paul home with her!... If only to tend her personal bar! <EG>

Yet another vote for the Commadore Club. First of all, you're at the bow of the ship which means really great views and that lovely "dipping" which really reminds you that you are asea. (The pianist did Noel Coward which was a real treat!) I second PaulNH's tip on the Chart Room which is great for before and after dinner in the Britannia. Fun to people watch and at some table's you do get a glimpse of what those "dreadful" photographer's will make people do in their best finery. (Who needs shows when you have entertainment like that?) LOL

If everyone is going to the Commodor Club, then it must get pretty crowded, no? I'll get my first try in a few weeks.

Ah, but,

  • Not every passenger reads this board.....
  • Some never find it - as it is forward & up top, while the dining rooms are aft, nearer the other bars.

I had the pleasure (my liver had the appropriate "fattening") to visit EVERY bar, lounge and other place of alcohol secretion (except for the crew's & officer's bars) in one almighty session covering 20 hours.

Personally, I'd opt for my Casino breakfast (when at sea).

Blackjack & Bloody Mary's..

Texas style...

BIG [stakes] and the "B-Mare's" served with no fruit, no celery, hot as hell and with a kick like a mule!

Seems like a long time ago when I graduated to be a “Texan-in-Training”.

JACK!

Good to see you on board(s)! I, for one, have missed your wit and wisdom! Hope this finds you and the wife fully recevered from whatever it was that ailed you. Did you ever confirm what it was?

Karie,

who wants to know, in case I ever strike it rich and can afford both the time and money to do the 'round the horn.

I guess it does make it noisey for the suites right next to the Commodore club?! Does sound a good bar though, we'll have to try it when on QM2 in a couple of weeks.

Personally I'd object to the noise from those suites interrupting my drinking:D

We were in the suite directly above the commodore Club. We rarely heard any noise, ocasionally we could just hear the piano in the evening.

Our 18 month old daughter made a lot of noise and enjoyed running from one end of the suite to the other. We never recieved any complaints from below:)
