biojeep Posted April 2, 2017 #1 Share Posted April 2, 2017 We are looking at cruising with NCL out of Manhatten or RC out of Boston. Both go to the same ports. Would like to hear pros & cons about embarking from these 2 cities. Both cruises cost the same. We would fly in the day before & would not have much time to sightsee in either place. Would like to hear from people who have experience using these 2 embarkation points.
careschocolates Posted April 20, 2017 #2 Share Posted April 20, 2017 My DH and I have only sailed out of NYC. It was recommended to us over Boston. I really like seeing the Statue of Liberty and the city
138east Posted April 20, 2017 #3 Share Posted April 20, 2017 Price out the total cost of each city. Hotels are very expensive in both Boston and NYC. Transportation to hotels/port is more expensive in NYC and depends on which of the three airports you fly into. There are no shuttles. Boston has few hotels which offer both airport and cruiseport shuttles, but they are located in Quincy and Dorchester, not downtown Boston. biojeep Posted April 20, 2017 Author #4 Share Posted April 20, 2017 138east -- how far is Quincy & Dorchester from the cruise port? Would it be convenient to stay here to sightsee in Boston?
biojeep Posted April 20, 2017 Author #5 Share Posted April 20, 2017 Can we walk from the Seaport Boston Hotel to the cruise terminal or is it too far to walk with luggage?
138east Posted April 20, 2017 #6 Share Posted April 20, 2017 138east -- how far is Quincy & Dorchester from the cruise port? Would it be convenient to stay here to sightsee in Boston? Can we walk from the Seaport Boston Hotel to the cruise terminal or is it too far to walk with luggage? It depends on the hotel and the access to the T. Quincy is 6+ miles from the cruise port. Dorchester is 3-3.5 miles. Downtown is a bit beyond the cruise port. These hotels are in more fringe areas - maybe a 2.5* - low 3* rating. I really like the Seaport Hotel and its location. You can get there for free from Logan Airport on the Silver Line, which stops across the street from the hotel coming from the airport. You can easily take the Silver Line to South station to transfer to the Red Line to go right downtown. It's 1.3 miles to Black Falcon. You could walk, but the Silver Line SL2 will take you there and a cab would be very inexpensive.
Nitemare Posted April 21, 2017 #7 Share Posted April 21, 2017 138east -- how far is Quincy & Dorchester from the cruise port? Would it be convenient to stay here to sightsee in Boston? I wouldn't recommend friends or family stay in Quincy to see Boston. I wouldn't recommend anyone stay in Dorchester to see Boston.
138east Posted April 21, 2017 #8 Share Posted April 21, 2017 The unfortunate reality is that the Boston hotels have become so expensive that many folks simply cannot afford to stay in town and are willing to stay elsewhere. Dorchester and Quincy are options, albeit inconvenient ones. In the end it's a personal financial decision.
Nitemare Posted April 21, 2017 #9 Share Posted April 21, 2017 I understand the financial aspect. I still would encourage my friends/family to figure out a way to stay some place better, whether it's a BnB in Newton or one of the new hotels going up near the future casino or something else instead of those options. Nitemare Posted May 15, 2017 #12 Share Posted May 15, 2017 Dorchester is a neighborhood IN Boston I know that. But it's not near tourist areas so I wouldn't recommend someone wanting to see Boston to stay there. If they want to visit friends or have business in Dorchester, then it might be a good place to stay. Quincy and Dorchester are on subway lines, Newton is not. The Green Line (D branch) goes right through Newton with many stops.
roomba920 Posted May 17, 2017 #13 Share Posted May 17, 2017 Oops you're right, though it is further from Boston and a suburb, not a neighborhood of. I'm old school...still think of the Green line as the trolley Sent from my iPhone using Forums
biojeep Posted May 17, 2017 Author #14 Share Posted May 17, 2017 Still would like to hear comments regarding my original thread. This thread has gotten completely off topic for some reason.
Nitemare Posted May 18, 2017 #15 Share Posted May 18, 2017 I've done cruises from both starting ports. Both are annoying, like every boarding location. If you aren't planning any touring in Boston or New Yrok I'd suggest you go to whichever one has cheaper airfare and hotel room for the night before. VidaNaPraia Posted May 18, 2017 #16 Share Posted May 18, 2017 .... one of the new hotels going up near the future casino...... What new hotels are those? All I can see as I pass by are construction cranes.
biojeep Posted May 21, 2017 Author #17 Share Posted May 21, 2017 Again could we please get back to the real topic of this thread - pros & cons of sailing out of NYC or Boston. Thanks
cementhands Posted May 26, 2017 #18 Share Posted May 26, 2017 Can we walk from the Seaport Boston Hotel to the cruise terminal or is it too far to walk with luggage? No it's too far. I think Uber's are in allowed now.
kluv2cruz Posted June 14, 2017 #19 Share Posted June 14, 2017 Depending where you're flying from, but I found cheaper air into Newark than Boston. Haven't tackled hotels yet. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
