Sailing with Enhanced Drivers License only

My husband and I only have EDL's to cruise with. Will I be turned away or hassled when I check in?

We are going on a closed loop out of Miami.

You might want to consider getting full passports, in case something happens and you need to fly back. (Miss the ship, someone sick at home, or whatever.)

That probably won't be possible with just the enhanced license.

I have read that many times it just doesn't say anything about an EDL and that concerns me. I know it is a WHTI compliant document but I just don't want to get there and be turned away. Guess I will call NCL and get clarification from them and print off everything I can find.

We sailed with our EDL's on the Gem with no questions or problems.

You will get a wide range of responses here:

Some will tell you to get get a passport now.

Some will tell you the other rules about birth certificate, etc.

Some will tell you that the EDL is worthless (they are wrong).

Even people in charge will give you bad advice. Since these are rather uncommon, many people treat them the same as a normal DL and say no. Just keep asking.

We don't have time to get our passports.

We use our EDL's to go to and from Canada so they are not worthless to us!

WHTI was successfully implemented on June 1, 2009 for entry into the U.S. by land and sea. U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry are required to present a WHTI-compliant document such as a valid passport, U.S. passport card, Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI, Global Entry or FAST), or an Enhanced Driver’s License.
