orchestrapal Posted December 14, 2014 #2 Share Posted December 14, 2014 August I'd vacation month for France so most of the smaller best restaurants and many other small shops are closed it is also the hottest month in France. If your not gourmets and don't mind the heat and humidity your good to go.
CPT Trips Posted December 14, 2014 #3 Share Posted December 14, 2014 Has anyone had a problem with high or low river levels on the Rhine in August? We had high water on the Danube in August several years ago. Almost didn't make it upriver to the canal.

I guess I don't think it would be any cooler in late July. When we are on a cruise we usually eat on the boat. Are crowds thinner in August than July. mimmy52 Posted December 15, 2014 #5 Share Posted December 15, 2014 I traveled on the Rhine this past August (2014) from Basel to Amsterdam with Viking. Because of high water, we had to skip Basel and embark at Breisach. Breisach is a lovely town, and the rest of the cruise went well. I expected it to be hot, and it wasn't. I wore a jacket every day. CruisermanVA Posted December 15, 2014 #6 Share Posted December 15, 2014 Is there a website that gives you information about river levels for the major European rivers on a monthly basis? While there's no guarantee that any river cruise would not have to be canceled or adjusted due to river levels, knowing when would be the best time to cruise would go a long way to convincing those who are on the fence about river cruises, like myself, to take the plunge.
