Smokiness of the Ships

Just how smokey will the Grandeur be? Are the Smoking/Non smoking areas well defined and adhered to? Will the rooms smell like smokers have been in there(I was really surprised smoking was allowed in all the rooms.) Our rooms are verandahs at the end of the long corridor on deck 7....will smoke blow back and make the balcony unusuable?

If you are that hung up on people smoking stay home! I agree that there should not be smoking in closed confined public spaces on any cruise ship...it is just plain common courtesy. However, I disagree with you as far as smoking in your cabin...people have the right to smoke in their cabin for the week unless the cruise line clearly marks it as NON-SMOKING CABIN.

 

As far as the balcony and the outside decks, people have as much right to smoke outside on their balcony or on any deck as you do not to smoke. If you are standing next to someone who smokes and it bothers you, then go to another part of the deck. If you are on your balcony and your neighbor is smoking on his or her balcony and it bothers you, then go inside or on one of the decks. I am not a smoker but believe that people have as much right to smoke as those who don't as long as they are not doing it in a non-smoking area.

 

One last thing, I believer that the Carnival Paradise which was the only :non-smoking" ship on the ocean was changed to smoking and non-smoking since it just did not work for Carnival!

Thanks for your input. :rolleyes: And by the way....NEVER said people shouldn't smoke in their cabins; only that I was surprised to find out all cabins were designated for smoking rooms. So, thanks again for all your helpful information. :eek:

Lighten up. The OP asked a question. There are many people who for one reason or another cannot be around smoke. Others just don't like it. Either way we all appreciate you telling us about the right to smoke. :rolleyes:

 

By the way, coming from someone who has been on the Paradise I doubt the fact that it was non smoking was the reason for it being switched. As you can see from my signature, we like the idea of being able to enjoy different ship and different itineraries. I am sure we are not the only ones to feel this way.

I was recently on the Majesty and there signs posted as to where you could smoke. Usually the non smoking side of the ship was empty and the smoking side was hopping. There are a lot more smokers then you think. No one that I came across though was ever disrespectful of the non smokers. You shouldn't have a problem with the ship you are going on. We were on a balcony last year and asked our neighbors if our smoking bothered them. They stated that they didn't even know that we were smoking. We would have rather smoked on out balcony then smoked in the room.

No cabins are designated non smoking not only do you run the risk of getting a cabin which smells like the previous ocupants have smoked themself to death in, but also if next door occupants smoke the air con recycles the smell into your cabin.

 

Most of the bars have approximately half allocated to smokers unfortunately the smoke does not understand that and pollutes the non smoking areas also.

 

The casino was like a old fashioned foggy area.

 

The only areas totally free of smoke were the restraunts, Theatre and one side of the deck .

 

Surely it is time they had some bars that are non smoking completely.

Which side of the deck areas are smoking and non smoking? Is it like that on all levels with open deck areas?

As you face forward the right hand side of the deck is smoking.

Our experience in general (haven't been on the Granduer) has been that the casinos and smaller lounges can be smokey.

 

Every cruise we have been on has the smoking areas listed in the daily ship program and we have only encountered one problem, one time. We were sittin with friends on the smoking side of the ship when a couple sat at a table next to us. After a few minutes the man at the table told us (not asked, told) that we would have to move as the smoke was bothering them. I informed him that he was on the smoking side of the ship as posted in the program and as evidenced by the fact that all of the tables on that side had ashtrays. Apparantly it didn't bother them enough to move but, that was the end of the conversation.

 

As far as the rooms are concerned, we book insides and have never entered a cabin that had any odors at all including smoke. There have been several discussions about how they keep the odor out and it seems that they have a cleaning agent and possibly use and ozone machine.

 

If your cabin is aft I would think that 2nd hand smoke from the neighbors shouldn't be a problem when the ship is under way. If it is on the side then the neighbors in the cabin or two forward of you might have smoke drifting your way when the ship is moving. When docked, the prevailing winds will determine if any smoke can make it to your balcony.

I hear your complaint, but I don't think they will ever have a bar which is totally non-smoking.

The dining rooms and theatre show lounge are all non-smoking. The bars are all smoking allowed and most are pretty smoky and unpleasant for non-smokers. On open decks, smoking is allowed anywhere. I have only had one cabin that was horribly smelly. We contacted houskeeping and they came and cleaned the room again and with some kind of air freshener and then it was fine.

The balconies are my biggest complaint. I don't have balconies all the time, but every cruise I get them on, it seems there are smokers all around me and every single time I go out to enjoy some nice, sea air, they are out there fouling the air and smoke and ashes blow on my balcony. I've gone back to regular, outside rooms with a window for that very reason! :cool:

Then try all the bars in California or Southern Ireland they are without exception non smoking.

 

I do not believe all the bars on the ships should be non smoking but some of them should, it is time people recognised that smoke does not stay in the designated area of the bar only.

I'm an avid non-smoker and have only had a few instances where smoking has been at all bothersome. When that has occurred, I just leave that area, simple. The casino is pretty much out of the question for us, but we're not crazy for gambling anyway. We have found that some of the bars have a non-smoking side (or perhaps we were just lucky to be around a lot of non-smokers) that are tolerable.

 

We find what works best for us is to stay out of the smoking areas. Even though we don't care to be around it, we do respect other peoples choices.

There is room for all of us on a cruise ship.

 

The only ship I've ever had a problem with the stench of smoke was on an older Carnival ship. A co-worker just got off a newer Carnival ship and she said it was pretty stinky, too. Pehaps coincidence, perhaps Carnival attracts more smokers, I don't know.

 

BTW, it is wonderful to go into restaurants and bars in CA and not be bothered by smoking.

I agree that a non-smoking bar would be nice! California, New York, Pleasure Island at Disneyworld, and soon hopefully in Michigan (bill is in state legislature right now). We have several winebars that are non-smoking in the Detroit area because smoke ruins the enjoyment of the wine and smokers go there all the time and they have inbelieveable wait times to even get in.

 

I am all for people having the right smoke where allowed and I still go to bars where smoking is allowed, but it is so nice to be able go home and not have your clothes stink and not have my hair stink when I shower... I know laundry is available on the ship, but it would be nice not to have to use it in order to wear a pair of black pants twice on the ship...

What about the solarium? Does that follow the one side smoking, one side non smoking setup?

Iam not the one who started talking about the "ashes" going to their balcony.

i think it's rude if a person standing somewhere and a smoker decides to smoke next to them even if it is open air. people would still inhale second-hand smoke and their clothes would also smell like smoke. how would smokers feel if someone burped near them and it stunk?

 

you can't really blame a smoker though if smoking is allowed in the room (like vegas).

However, to provide an onboard environment that also satisfies smokers, we have special designated smoking areas in many of our lounges and on all open-air decks. On Alaska Cruisetours, smoking is not permitted on motorcoaches or inside traincars. On Canadian Rockies Cruisetours, smoking is not permitted on motorcoaches or anywhere on the traincars.

 

With that said.....I have been on the Grandeur....the Solarium is non smoking...the dining room and lounges are non smoking....in the Schooner and the Singing in the Rain etc....there are smoking sections and non smoking sections....according to the Welcome letter from the first day...you can smoke in your room....our room did not smell of smoke at all (good febreeze maybe???)

Having a no-smoking area in a room is like having a no-peeing area of a pool! :D :D
