  1. Excellent news, Roy! I agree with Bruce and Sandi. Start with very short walks. If you could mow the back yard, you can go a short distance. Work your way up slowly. You'll feel better for doing it. That is probably why you slept well last night! Do you remember back when you had burning lips? What did they give you for that? And did it help? My sister is moaning about it again and says only chapstick helps but that isn't always enough.
  2. @Sharon in AZ Happy Birthday to your daughter! @dobiemom Welcome back to the Daily and wishing you total success for tomorrow's eye surgery. I think I'm kind of fortunate on the trash/recycle issue. Back in Ohio we had to contract with an independent trash hauler. Recycling was done through the city and you paid for it whether you recycled or not. There was a place where you could take your yard waste and it would be composted. You could later pick up mulch from them, but it wasn't treated for ants and termites. Here in Midland the city picks up the trash weekly. Recycling is done once a month, but there is a recycling center just outside of town where you can take your excess loads. I took a bunch of boxes out there after I moved. You can also drop off your grocery bags there. Yard waste is picked up weekly by the city and taken to be composted. You have to use a city yard waste bin or bags that you can buy at most places around town. For April they will pick up the bags for free. Starting in May they have to have a sticker on them and the waste bin does as well. They will continue to pick up yard waste weekly until December. Once a month they have heavy item pickup. You can put out furniture, some appliances, etc. Pickup this month was today. You can put out the heavier yard waste and I lugged some old tree trunks and big branches out there. I also put out the lumber scraps that Previous Owner had dumped in the wooded area of the yard. I'm sure I'll find more for next month!
  3. @marshhawk Annie, I'll be thinking of you today while you're at the pulmonologist's office. Hoping for good news only.
  4. Good morning, everyone! It is cold here in mid-Michigan. I suppose that is a relative description, but after the beautiful week last week, it is cold. It is 32F right now with a high of 44F expected. Add a little wind in and the gray skies, and you have a cold, gloomy, dismal day. But, I'm on the right side of the ground, so It will be a great day. I did check and my tax payment was withdrawn this morning, so I'm all set on taxes. I set it up for a direct withdrawal for today. If you owe money, why pay early? Today's meal would fit in the category of comfort food and for those of us re-experiencing winter, it is a perfect choice. This first recipe replaced half the ziti with roasted vegetables, so the carb count is close to okay for me. https://cookieandkate.com/baked-ziti-recipe-with-roasted-vegetables/ I could dig into that! This next one is a little higher in carbs, but still not bad if you limit yourself to one serving. But, who does that? https://www.themediterraneandish.com/baked-ziti-vegetarian/ No carb count available for this next recipe, but I would put it in the same range as the previous one. This one uses spinach in the dish. You really can use the vegetables you like and leave out the ones you don't. I didn't find any with carrots in it, but carrot lovers can feel free to add them. In the first recipe you could roast the carrots. The roasted carrots in the falafel sandwich recipe actually looked pretty good. https://www.loveandlemons.com/baked-ziti/ Happy Birthday to Jim @Cruzin Terri and Martha @sailingdutchy. A big Happy Anniversary to Holland America Line! Wishng you all a wonderful day!
  5. I went through that with both big toes except I had the whole nail removed. Yes, that hurts. I found if I laid on the couch and put my leg up along the back of it so the toe was elevated, that helped a little. And ice. Lots of ice. Or, lots of wine.
  6. Thanks, Ladybug18. I had no idea since it has been so long. I do know it is a fraction of the cost of a ship excursion.
  7. @rafinmd That does sound like a good report from the oncologist. Great to know you are free until July 17. Could you entice the neighbor to continue the yard work for a bit longer with a little cash? @StLouisCruisers Sandi, please send me an email concerning tomorrow's post. debfish34 at gmail dot com.
  8. In 2017 we did the bus trip to Mt. Dalsnibba in the morning and the RIB in the afternoon. Both were through Geiranger Fjordservice and we got a discount for booking two excursions. In 2022 we only did the Panoramic bus tour to Mt. Dalsnibba and then the overlook up the Eagle Road. It was too long to work in both, so we did the RIB in Eidfjord instead.
  9. Good morning, everyone! What a difference a day makes. It is snowing outside right now. It is supposed to eventually turn over into rain. As Nancy @ottahand7 said, the ground is too warm for it to stick. That is the only saving grace. After discussion with Sue, this messy painter is going to be back at it. The guest room really needs painting and it will be best to do it before Sue moves in and the room is filled with furniture. Right now there is only a bed in there. So, I'll be hitting the paint store and getting started this week. May as well, the weather is supposed to be lousy. I am celebrating that I successfully had a charge on my credit card reversed with little effort. I saw the charge and had no idea what it was, so called the number next to it and it was the Washington Post. So, I contacted them and they quickly reversed the charge. Today's meal is interesting, but after reading the nutritional information, I will be taking a pass on it due to the carb content. Beans are great in small amounts because of the fiber and protein they contain, but the carb count on these tacos is just too high for me. I'm sure someone will like them, so I offer the following selections. Keep in mind, you can always add in some meat for the carnivores in the family. https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/vegetarian-bean-tacos/ I could look for the low carb tortillas. They would help in the carb department. But, I confess, I would prefer the meat tacos. The next recipe looks pretty good and the carbs are lower. They are right that I probably wouldn't miss the meat - if I didn't know it was missing. https://www.skinnytaste.com/black-bean-tacos/ This next one looks really good and the quinoa helps give you a meat texture for the filling, but adds to the carb count. https://playswellwithbutter.com/quinoa-black-bean-tacos/ Wishing you all a wonderful day!
  10. My sincere sympathies to you and your family. Mental illness affects the whole family and healing can take time. Hold each other closely and know that all of us at the Daily are holding you and your family in our hearts.
  11. I did prebook online. Lots of people think this is a real thrill and will book it. Your son will have a blast! We did a RIB in Eidfjord as well and that was equally thrilling. It was great doing donuts out on the fjord!
  12. Good morning, everyone! It is supposed to be a few degrees cooler here today with a high of 75F. Rain moving in late afternoon and evening and then the cold returns tomorrow. I'm going to have to figure out how to turn the heat back on. Not much on the agenda today except to get some of the heavy brush to the curb for collection tomorrow. I will also put out the lumber scraps that were disposed of in the wooded area of the yard. Happy Birthday to Kai! @StLouisCruisers Today's meal is interesting, but I'm going with @rafinmd Roy's alternative. I haven't had steak since I was on the Nieuw Statendam last fall. Falafel is a deep-fried ball or patty-shaped fritter of Arab origin, featuring in Middle Eastern cuisine made from broad beans, ground chickpeas, or both. Here is a recipe for making your own falafel. I know you can get a box mix for it. https://www.themediterraneandish.com/how-to-make-falafel/ Carrot lovers will love this first recipe because carrots are featured roasted vegetable. https://pinchofyum.com/spicy-falafel-roasted-veggie-naan-wich This one doesn't call for roasting the vegetables ahead of time, but there is no reason why you couldn't. It also contains a recipe for making your own falafel. https://www.eatingwell.com/recipe/279264/baked-falafel-sandwiches/ This last recipe is a cauliflower falafel with roasted vegetables. A bit of a twist to liven things up! https://www.archanaskitchen.com/pita-sandwich-with-cauliflower-falafel-and-oven-roasted-vegetables If I had to choose, I'd use different veggies and go with #1. Maybe #3. Wishing you all a wonderful day.
  13. There really isn't a cruise terminal in Geiranger. Geiranger Fjordservice is almost next door to the dock where the tender drops you off. They gave us waterproof, windproof suits to wear, but we did not get soaked. The boat goes pretty fast and I was nervous about that before we went, but this excursion was the thrill of my trip. We went in the afternoon after going up Mt. Dalsnibba in the morning.
  14. So glad you are happy on board. I don't mind inside cabins and we have one booked this summer for 32 days on the Zaandam.
  15. I did the RIB in Geiranger in 2017 and it was fantastic. You can get so close to the waterfalls that you can almost reach out and touch them. I used Geiranger Fjordservice. https://www.geirangerfjord.no/geirangerfjord-rib-7
  16. I'm so sorry for the loss of your cousin's DH. Hugs and healing thoughts to you and your cousin. Welcome to the Daily, Denise! We look forward to hearing much more from you.
  17. Good morning, everyone! It is another glorious day here in mid-Michigan. We are supposed to have sunshine and temps around 80F. Tomorrow cools down and we have threats of precipitation. So, I'll enjoy today while I can. I have to get some of the larger branches and debris out to the curb for Heavy Item Pick Up on Monday. I'll work on that today and tomorrow. Once I get those out to the curb, the backyard will look a lot better. Given the city services, I don't understand why the previous owners just created trash heaps in the yard. Today's meal reminds me of one my mom used to make. She made it with chicken and wrapped chicken and veggies in foil and we cooked them on the grill. We called it hobo chicken. We each got our own packet and there was no squabbling over who got what. I make a dish that is similar. It is white fish wrapped in parchment paper with veggies and red wine. Mmmm. So, lots of variations with this one. Feel free to use the idea and make your own dish. https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/salmon-veggie-packets/ Here's one to do on the grill as it uses a foil packet. You can vary the vegetables and use what you like. Mom put potato slices in as well as green beans. https://www.wholesomeyum.com/baked-salmon-foil-packets-with-vegetables-grill-option/ I'd probably add in a few slices of onion. This sure looks good! If I had a gas canister for my grill, I'd make this tonight! Here's one last version that shows some variety in seasoning and vegetables. https://www.savorynothings.com/salmon-foil-packets/ Remember, you can use a different type of fish or use chicken. It is a great summer dish with very little cleanup and healthy as well. Giving thanks that all the Dailyites made it to Florida for their cruise, including Rover. Wishing you all a wonderful day.
  18. I'm so glad, Sharon, that you made it to FLL even though a little late. Rest up tonight as the party starts tomorrow! There are worse things than shopping. But take the time to rest up. You deserve to put your feet up and have a glass of wine. Wonderful news! So, you can relax and enjoy that glass of wine. So glad the Dailyites are almost all in Florida. Will keep the fingers and toes crossed until @AV8rix Susan arrives and @TiogaCruiser and DH make it from Fort Myers to the ship. Safe travels to you all tomorrow on your way to the ship.
  19. I am so sorry for your loss. I am at a loss for words, but do know that my heart goes out to you and your friend.
  20. Good morning, everyone! It is shaping up to be a hot day here in mid-Michigan with plenty of sunshine. My neighborhood walk will be pleasant due to nice weather. The only other things on the agenda are a much needed haircut and taking brother Jeff to the grocery store. Then, relax! The Arctic char is closely related to both salmon and lake trout, and has many characteristics of both. The fish is highly variable in colour, depending on the time of year and the environmental conditions of the lake where it lives. No other freshwater fish is found as far north; it is, for instance, the only fish species in Lake Hazen which extend up to 81°56′N 68°55′W on Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic. It is one of the rarest fish species in Great Britain and Ireland, found mainly in deep, cold, glacial lakes, and is at risk there from acidification. In other parts of its range, such as the Nordic countries, it is much more common, and is fished extensively. In Siberia, it is known as golets and it has been introduced in lakes where it sometimes threatens less hardy endemic species, such as the small-mouth char and the long-finned char in Elgygytgyn Lake. The flesh is fine-flaked and medium firm. The color is between light pink and deep red, and the taste is like something between trout and salmon. I only found one recipe for arctic char tostadas. There were numerous pages of recipes, but they were all pretty much the same one. If you can't find arctic char, you can substitute another fish. Since it is related to salmon and trout, one of them might be good. We often have grouper in our fish tacos. https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/arctic-char-tostadas Tostadas are generally flat and made on crispy corn tortillas. Tacos can be made in crispy corn tortillas, but are generally soft and folded and can be made in flour tortillas. But, since they are so closely related, I included a recipe for arctic char tacos. You can easily turn it into a tostada if you'd prefer. https://pumpkinandpeanutbutter.com/2019/03/12/15-minute-fish-tacos/ Fingers crossed that all the Dailyites heading to FLL for the Volendam make it today. As someone else noted, it was heartwarming to see all the help and advice being given by Dailyites to @TiogaCruiser. Fingers are also crossed for @JazzyV Vanessa concerning her knee. Let's hope all is well and there is an easy fix so she is in tip top shape for her cruise. Warm thoughts and hugs out to @luvteaching and hoping that her DH has a rapid recovery and is home shortly. @atexsix Bruno, let me join the other Dailyites who have commented on the wonderful care you are giving your DD. Bless you! Wishing you all a wonderful day!
  21. Good morning everyone from a sunny and warm mid-Michigan. Temps are supposed to reach 82F today. Last night I slept with the windows open in my bedroom. I love being able to do that! I had every window in the house open yesterday. We had a nice breeze coming in and the house smelled so nice and fresh. I get to do that again today! And, yes, I turned off the heat for the next few days. After my walk this morning I plan to fill another lawn bag with leaves and stuff left over from winter. I also have to get some of the heavy brush out to the curb for pick up on Monday during Heavy Item pickup. The rules here are a bit confusing at times. I sure hope those flying to Fort Lauderdale are able to get there today. @Sharon in AZ and @TiogaCruiser fingers are crossed for both of you! I wondered about today's dish with a sauce made of just ricotta and milk. It sounds kind of boring and plain to me, but I think I'd have to give it a try first before I pass judgement. Who knows? It might be perfect for the rest of the ingredients. https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/pepper-ricotta-primavera/ It looks tasty. In the next recipe the ricotta is not thinned with milk. I'm still sceptical, but I'd give it a try. https://spicetrekkers.com/recipes/pasta-primavera-with-ricotta Finally, here's a version from the diary farmers of Canada. https://dairyfarmersofcanada.ca/en/canadian-goodness/recipes/herbed-ricotta-primavera-pasta Basically, you can use the vegetables you like. Primavera is spring so spring vegetables are suggested. Make it colorful and season it to your taste. Wishing everyone a wonderful day!
  22. Thank you, Vanessa! I have heard of that as egg in a hole or egg in a basket. I think I'd like to try the English version. When it comes to health, you want to be as boring as possible. For years I was and then my sodium went low. I told my doctor that I was providing her with variety since most of her day was telling patients to eat less, move more, and lay off the salt. She said thank you for thinking of me. The pesto in the frying pan sounds good to me. Maybe I am a kid at heart? I think that is the first thing that has come back as normal. And, yes, I am very happy.
  23. I'm kind of lost on the toad in a hole. Is that a food? The mammogram results came back as boringly normal. Too much garlic? Is that even possible? @kochleffel I've been meaning to thank you for all of your explanations of Passover and the rituals involving food. I find that fascinating. I also appreciate the humor you employ in your descriptions. Putting the dishes away could get fun, but expensive after a while!
  24. Do you think it may be that the flavor is quite intense in a pesto? I've also had sun dried tomato pesto and I love it. I'm going to have to try the grilled cheese with the mayo. Sounds really good!
