  1. We had 9690 a few years ago and loved it. The views looking at the wake were spectacular. We usually don't have balcony cabins because DW likes to lay in the sun and most balconies are not big enough for a lounger. 9690 had two loungers, two chairs and a table. I'm hoping that 8390 will have at least one lounger.

We had one lounger and one regular chair. Your balcony should be a little bigger as it shrinks a bit the higher floor you are on. Enjoy.

  2. We are booked on Carnival Vista in September. I am looking in to hotels for the night before. It seems almost all the hotels are already sold out. So that has me looking into Houston. How will traffic be in the morning coming from there? I would much rather stay in Galveston so is it a possibility that some hotels have not published their rates yet since we are almost a year out?

That is quite possible. I'm not expert on Galveston. We are going on our first cruise from there in April. I had a heck of a time finding a hotel in Galveston that fit our budget. Either it was too expensive in my opinion or they required two nights. I finally did find a one night stay at the Days Inn Seawall blvd. It was a good price. We booked it in May so eleven months before cruise. The reviews aren't that great for one it's away from the restaurant area but it's only one night. We can take a cab to eat, there are a few restaurants within walking distance. It's a tough port to leave out of for sure, probably our only time we will do it. Good luck.

  3. If you are looking for a pretty beach with clear water and nice sand, check out Blue Kay. It's the first beach on the Malecon, which is closest to the port. There's no charge to go there (but some have reported a $5 cover charge and this includes a drink or two...so basically free) and it's really beautiful. It's only a $2 ride back to the port.

Check out my complete review, listed in my signature line, for TONS of pictures that will help you decide. There's decent snorkeling there too.

Also...the previous poster mentioned going to Maya Chan. That's an All Inclusive and not what you are looking for...especially if you are doing the ruins for half a day. You don't want to pay for an AI and not get to use it all. I'm not even sure how you'd be able to go there because the folks at Maya Chan pick everyone up at the same time and take them there.

Thanks for the post. We did book the 4 hours ruins tour with Native Choice so we should be back around 1. The place you mention sounds perfect to go to for 2 hours or so. Is there a place to get some lunch there as we don't get anything on the ruins tour to eat?

  4. I did a mock booking for Enterprise out of Hobby with a Galveston drop off, they want $150.. drop off fee. It's $318.00 for 2 days, that is ridiculous. We may have to take a shuttle to Galveston then rent a car, that would be about $100.00 for the car rental. I also have to add the shuttle cost. Florida is so much easier.

Agreed, Florida is much easier and cheaper. This will be our first and last time out of Galveston, but we will enjoy it, we don't cruise too often. We got galveston limo round trip. It was $40 per person round trip, they are dropping us off at our hotel in Galveston the day before the cruise. We will have to get a cab to the ship.

  5. We were booked with Royston for an island tour until Royal changed our eastern itinerary to a western (yuck). We'd been looking forward to another tour with Royston for a whole year! It's not your average island tour, and was lots of fun.

This was one of the best tours we ever did on any island. Takes you to out of the way places where only his van can go.

  6. anybody gor any updates on the island? and any idea when cruise ships might be returning?

    Thanks

On the Royal Caribbean board today they issued a release that said the Jewel of the seas cruise in April 2018 will not be going to Dominica instead going to Martinique. So I'm guessing the situation isn't good if they have to cancel that far in advance.

  7. What would you do here in our case? Family of four travelling next April including 2 boys ages 17 and 9, Never been to Costa Maya, we were supposed to go there in 2007 but Hurricane Dean changed those plans. We are looking to do the ruins tour with Native Choice (one of the shorter ones, not the all day one) or just a beach day maybe a pay as you go type with beach loungers. We are already doing all inclusive at Mr. Sanchos in Cozumel and doing the Fun n Sun with Victor Bodden in Roatan on this cruise. So we do have some beach time already planned but wanted to see a little culture and history for the kids somewhere along the line. I know my wife would just rather do the beach. I know you can't put yourself in our shoes but just wanted some opinions. Are the beaches in Costa Maya not to be missed? If we do a morning ruins tour would we have time for an afternoon beach break for a few hours? We are in port 8 am to 5 pm. Thank You all.

  8. Last week was Columbus Day so many kids had off at least one day so families decide just to take the whole week. My kids are off the 30th and 31st, not for Halloween but teacher in service days. It's the end of the marking period for conferences, report card prep, etc. We take our kids out for vacation including cruises. We are doing it in April of '18. They are good students and get mostly A's.
