    I don't doubt that many cases originate in Florida. At least 3 Florida based cruise ships have had recent outbreaks.

    The ABC  islands were hotspots before cruising restarted, as were others.

    I've been lurking to see how this pans out with the virus but wanted to jump in for a moment.  While it's possible that people may have caught the virus in FL, I'm sure a great many are catching it on their flights.  I keep seeing where people test positive around 4ish days after boarding and that ties in pretty well with having been on a flight to get to the cruise, where ever it may originate.  This past fall people flying to Iceland and Europe were found to have the virus after boarding ships.  Less than now since Delta isn't a virulent as Omicron is.  I'm sure that the media will start up their ridiculous comments on cruise ships being floating petri dishes...but IMNSHO, they would probably be more correct by saying that about airplanes.  I hope you all can stay as healthy as possible!  Enjoy the rest of your cruise.

  2. So good to hear that you are finally going to be back onboard a Dam ship!  If you know them, Sue and Leon are on also doing B2B for the same cruises.  They (as was I) were on the 1/2 2020 WC too.  Glad to hear that Manny and Kay are at least working now; I've seen Manny around for years and had Kay for a number of cruises over the years.  Enjoy and I'll sail along with you.

  3. This came up a little while ago so you may want to check this out:

    For us, we prefer Holland over Princess.  The food is better on Holland, the vibe on Holland is much more laid back which is what we prefer.  We don't need to be entertained all the time; we prefer quiet places to sit on sea days.  Not that we've used them but there are number of accessible cabins on each ship that people like when they get them (and need them!).  Others may be able to chime in about the wheelchair experiences onboard.

    @Copper10-8 John, I notice the dam ships sail close by Port Angeles coming in and going out of Port Angeles. Do they pick up/drop off the pilots there?

    Yes, they do.  I happened to be tracking the ship on the prior cruise and saw the pilot boat come out and then do away from the ship.  I had been wondering why she was tracking towards Port Angeles so kept watching.  There's a webcam in the harbor there that I was watching too but the ship never got close enough to catch a glimpse.

    Not a close-up like PTZ but it’s something:

    Thanks, I had seen those....the Elliot Bay one would be good if their cameras weren't so low and showing so much roof.  I'll probably check out another one I found from across the bay to see when they sail by.  https://www.weatherbug.com/weather-camera/?cam=SALTY    Better than nothing!  We are all so spoiled by the FLL and MIA cameras! 😎

    There are two paths, one with vaccinated passengers (95%) and one that requires test cruises.  Lines can choose either one or both.  I suspect RCI wants a ship or two that doesn’t require vaccinated passengers.

    The news story I read said everyone needed to be vaccinated but I looked at other stories and saw no mention of that.  For "suspect" stories, I usually hunt around for more than one as these days, the media doesn't always get the facts correct. 🙄  I didn't this time...my bad!

    It will be very interesting to follow this and see how it goes.  I'm more than happy to see how it goes for all the "guinea pigs" that want to sail before I do!

  7. What I don't understand about this is that the CDC had said if everyone is vaccinated,  the cruise lines didn't need to do the "test" cruises.  Has something changed?  What does this mean for HAL?  Will they now need to do these test cruises?

    The one thing I would add to IP4IGO’s very helpful post is to do the math on the beverage package.  It isn’t worth that much to everyone.  It depends on how many sodas, waters, alcoholic drinks, specialty coffees, etc you tend to drink.

    Once you do the math for what you consume, you will have a better idea on it’s worth to you.

    Another thing to consider is that the 15% gratuity is included in the package price.

    Also the difference between getting the Have it All is that if you don't get it, basically what they give you back is half of what everything is worth.   For example, I priced out what it all would cost if you bought each thing itself, internet, liquor package, specialty dining, etc.  For a cruise (14 day) I'm looking at, it works out to about $1,200pp while if I don't get the Have it all, I will get about a $600 deduction.

    I wonder if something like this might be afoot.  Nieuw Statendam has been in port for a longer time than "normal".  Sailing today has been delayed from 1700 to 2200 when I checked this afternoon.  Why?

    I've been wondering if her longer than usual porting this time is a sign of her possibly crewing up!

  10. I just found this.  Our wonderful governor....ugh....  While he's done some good things, there are other things...not so good.

    ==============================

    "DeSantis’ press office on Monday (4/12) asserted that his recent executive order barring businesses from requiring proof of vaccinated customers extends to cruise lines operating in Florida.

    “The Governor’s Executive Order provides that businesses in Florida are prohibited from requiring patrons or customers to provide any documentation certifying COVID-19 vaccination or post-transmission recovery to gain access to, entry upon, or service from the business,” press secretary Cody McCloud said by email. “Therefore, the Executive Order prohibits cruise lines from requiring vaccine passports for their Florida operations.”

    ==============================

    So, we basically have to hope that the CDC requires them.  That will nip all this foolishness in the bud.  But, they have to get off their butts and finally come up with those guidelines the cruise lines have been waiting for since last year!

    Can't read this article unfortunately.

    If they are seriously thinking about not requiring the vaccine, they are crazy.  Maybe we need to start a petition or mass emailing HAL about this.  I do hope that HAL can choose to do this on their own.

    I have always thought that the lines would need to purchase and vaccinate their crew members themselves.

    I've thought the same thing and I'm sure that will be the case if the cruise lines are requiring these particular vaccines.  Hopefully as supply becomes more plentiful, they will be able to do just that.

    Another "Debbie Downer" blow for HAL today as the UK has just put the Philippines on its list of countries that are restricted from the UK.  What this means is not completely clear but it would seem that Filipino crew members would now be stopped from joining a ship in the UK.  Any Filipino flying to the UK would have to quarantine for 14 days at a government operated facility.

    Hank

    I wonder if HAL had any advanced knowledge of this considering both the Volendam and now the Zaandam are in/heading to Greece.

    I saw yesterday an announcement from NCL that said, for crew, they are requiring ONLY the vaccines that are currently available in the US (including AstraZenica too).  From what I've heard, Indonesia is beginning to vaccinate it's population with the Sinovac vaccine from China.  I don't know what the situation is in the Philippines.  This is going to throw another monkey wrench into this whole process of resuming cruising that I don't think a lot of us have thought of.

    To me & others this is totally frustrating . I just went there & zero appointments . No areas came yp they asked for our zip code . what we have been seeing all along  whether this web site or Myturn.ca.gov is the same no appointments available to any one who even wants the pfe or Moderna vaccines  . Just  very upsetting  to our neighbors ie

    @mcrcruiser  I started looking at Walgreens and could never find an appt.  My niece, who works at one, told me to check constantly!  From one minute to the next it can change.  Also, find what stores (Walgreens or CVS and call one; they can tell you who is) actually are giving it; they aren't all giving it and use THAT zip code specifically.  For example, 2 yesterday I looked 2X in the morning and neither local store had it and the website said no store would have it for the next 5 days within 25 miles of me.  I looked again early afternoon and  there were appointments!  Quickly leaped on one for my DH and he's going today to get his first vaccine.  Just keep at it and you'll find something.  Good luck!

    Does anybody have any experience or opinion on the partial Panama canal cruises? I am considering the 11-night itinerary on the Eurodam for next January or February. Is partial entry into the canal even worth it? What about the late arrival in Aruba and early departure in Cartagena- is there time to enjoy them? Any opinion or critique of the itinerary is welcome. The 11-night itinerary is below. Thank you!

    A partial transit is totally worth it if you want to see the workings of the Canal.  It's fascinating!  I've been though both directions and I'm still fascinated by it.  You'll see plenty with the partial transit.

    Cartagena is always a short stop; has to do with the timing/location in regards to the Canal.  I don't think we've ever had a full day in Cartagena on a cruise that had the Canal on the itinerary.  Regarding Aruba, if you've never been, some is better than none.  I'm sure there will be an interesting tour to go on from the ship so you'll see/experience plenty of it.
