  1. It's so easy to get to Herculeneum on your own. You can get on the #1 tram on the street directly in front of the cruise port, this tram drops you right in front of the Porta Nolana starting point for the Circumvesuviana regional rail line. You can take any train going to either Poggiomarino or Sorrento, both lines stop at Ercolano Scavi, the stop for Herculeneum. The walk from the station to the park ticket office is about a half mile in a dead straight line. It's very easy. Just reverse the process to return to Naples, but get off the train at the penultimate stop, Garibaldi, and switch to the #1 metro line to get quickly to the historic center of town. You'll likely get back to Naples at lunchtime, perfect to enjoy a pizza in its home town.
  2. Just a heads-up about the museum, many of the key pieces of the collection are out on loan to the Tokyo museum through the end of 2022. A Japanese media company is paying for the restoration of the Alexander mosaic and the exhibition is part of the deal. Il MANN arriva in Giappone con una grande mostra su Pompei - Arte Magazine
  3. Yes, they generally run through the end of October, weather permitting. From the FAQs on the ferry website: Generalmente la stagione inizia il 1° Aprile e termina il 1° Novembre. I think that's pretty straightforward even if you don't read Italian. Link here: Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti - Biglietto Cinque Terre online e altre domande frequenti
  4. What time does your ship arrive in Naples?
  5. If you're going in by train I'd get on the first one possible to give yourself as much pad as possible. The metro does work for this transition but it's a bit of a walk from the basilica to the nearest stop (900 meters/one half mile to the Ottaviano stop) and you have to change lines at Termini. I think you may be underestimating how long this will take, I would assume 40 - 45 minutes and be pleasantly surprised if it takes less. Bus would take about the same amount of time but you'd also have to make a change (bus #64 to Largo Argentina followed by #87 to the Colosseo). It's a little less walking as the bus stop is quite close to the basilica. I know that google maps estimates this two and a quarter mile walk taking 45 minutes but that doesn't reflect the reality on the ground, the traffic, the crowds on the sidewalks, the time to cross streets, etc. And all of that assumes you don't make any wrong turns. I would assume an hour if you want to walk and again, be pleasantly surprised if you get there faster.
  6. Why limit yourself to the ship's tour to Herculaneum? It's so easy to get there on your own and not be limited.
  7. What interests you most? It's not realistic to cram both the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum into one six hour time frame, you really need to choose one or the other (or neither, if they don't interest you), then build on that.
  8. If you can get there earlier, I would. The line at St. Peter's is just for security and it moves along but it can be long. You can walk the entire basilica and get a good overview in an hour. How are you planning to get to the Colosseum from St. Peter's? That will determine what time you'd need to leave the area to make your 10:25 booking.
  9. There is Enoteca Cavacini at Via Gorizia 2 if you want the whole experience and are looking for better wines: Enoteca Cavacini - Posts | Facebook Otherwise, for everyday table wines any corner store or grocery store will have them. There is a Todi's market at Via Isonzo 2, about 200 meters/one-tenth of a mile from the cruise ship shuttle bus stop.
  10. Yes, that's doable assuming you can be off the ship at 7.
  11. The easiest would be a combination of a water taxi from your hotel to Piazzale Roma, followed by a car service to Ravenna. This would also be the most expensive. You'd be looking at around 65 euro for the water taxi, then around 300 for the car service.
  12. The least walking would require a car service that picks you up at the ship, drives you to Pisa and brings you back. That's also the most expensive option, although you might be able to find others on your roll call to share the trip with you. Livorno is one of the ports that, unless you have a car service pick you up at the ship, require you to take a port bus into town. You can't simply walk out of the port. Where the port bus drops off you can pick up bus tours to Pisa. The tourist information office is just around the corner from the tour bus drop off, you can contact them for more information on their Facebook page here: (20+) Ufficio Turistico Livorno | Facebook
  13. The Europcar office in Civitavecchia is at Via Tarquinia, 19/27, which is right across the street from the port shuttle drop off point. It could not be closer.
  14. There is a fixed fare for taxis from FCO airport to locations within the Aurelian walls of Rome, that fare is currently 50 euro. Most car services will quote around the same amount or slightly higher.
  15. The NY Times article suggests checking with the US Embassy to Rome for current information on Italy and gives this link: List of U.S. Embassies and Consulates (state.gov) It goes on to suggest ways to obtain a certificate of recovery in order to travel and gives a link to CDC's airline check list: Airline Checklist: How to Confirm Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination and Negative Qualifying Test Results or Documentation of Recovery from COVID-19 (Print-only) (cdc.gov) They suggest telemed services like Quick MD to help obtain proof. They suggest carrying printed out copies of all documentation and of the CDC guidelines.
  16. You will get the best rates at a bank ATM. Depending on how much currency you need and the fees charged by your bank, it may be worthwhile to buy it before leaving home. When I've needed larger amounts (for villa payments, for example) I bought it from the bank, for lesser amounts bank ATMs in country are the way to go.
  17. You can purchase the card on line, using the link on the national park web site here: Cinque Terre Treno MS Card | Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre (parconazionale5terre.it)
  18. I seriously doubt the cruise line will be able to help with ground transport in Italy. There are two bus lines, the #90 from the train station to the port has its last departure from the Ravenna train station on Mon-Sat at 19:15 (7:15 PM) and on Sundays and holidays at 18:15. Schedule here: RA_Linea_90.pdf (startromagna.it) Line #70 has a last departure from the Ravenna train station on Mon-Sat at 19:33 (7:33 PM) and 19:03 on Sundays and holidays. Schedule here: RA_Linea_70.pdf (startromagna.it)
  19. Right now there's the public bus or a car service. Eventually they'll probably bring back a port shuttle but there's no news on that yet.
  20. For a direct flight to the States you need to be checking in at the airport three hours in advance, in this case around 7 AM. It's an hour ride from the cruise port to the airport, so if you think you can be off the ship and in the car (a private car service is the only way to accomplish this) by 6 AM, go for it. I think it's a push personally.
  21. If there isn't a taxi stand near your accommodations they (the hotel front desk or your apartment host) can call one for you.
  22. This came up on the TA message boards, NLG (Navigazione Libera del Golfo) now has ferry service between Naples Beverello and Positano through the end of September 2022. The morning departure leaves Beverello at 8:35 and arrives to Positano at 10:30. The return probably won't work for most cruisers as it doesn't arrive to Beverello until 18:30 (6:30 PM). It runs seven days a week and the fare is 27,50 euro each way. More info here: Napoli-Positano - NLG (navlib.it)
  23. Only IC and Frecce trains have seat assignments. Between Venice and Trieste Italotreno's only run of the day is too late if you're boarding the ship that day, but would work if you're going to Trieste the night before. Their run departs Venice at 18:55 and arrives at 20:56. Trenitalia has a Frecce departing at 10:11 and arriving at 12:10, that should work for you.
  24. There are taxis at Bari Centrale, if that's what you meant.
  25. A water taxi from a hotel in/near Piazzale Roma would make no sense, it would have to travel about three times as far as a land taxi, the People Mover or just walking. By water the boat would have to go all the way around and enter from the other side, there is no shortcut.
