CharTrav Posted December 20, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 20, 2017 Tried to post this before from my iPhone and have no idea what the issue was but let me try again. Hoping it will go thru this time and be displayed on my iPhone correctly. Not truncated etc. In a few, less than 2.5, wks we will be leaving Dulles at some ungodly hour - 6am - to arrive in Miami at around 9am. Viking agents will then meet and transfer us to the Port of Miami. Question to those who have recently gone on the Sky out of Miami and arrived early in the morning, what was your experience? How did Viking handle the more than 2 hr gap between port arrival and being able to board the ship, which I assume is noon. Or is it 11am? Thanks in advance. Capt_BJ Posted December 20, 2017 #2 Share Posted December 20, 2017 IME - but my experience does not include VIKING OCEAN {VO} YET - most ships will begin letting pass' on in the 11 to 11:30 time frame. They will ask you to stay in common areas. I believe the info books for VO mention time of availability for cabins by class ...... (example a DV says 2pm access) This was my experience with Viking River .... we arrived around noon and were invited to board and have lunch and enjoy the common areas as room prep was completed. Within 10 minutes a crew member found us and told us our room was ready and escorted us there.... I HAVE sailed from Miami many times and lived in Miami for 10 years flying in/out many times for work. If your flight arrives at 9 it will be 10ish by the time you get out of the terminal and into any sort of ground transportation to the port. Were it me, I'd stop at LaCarreta (in the airport) for some Cuban breakfast before heading to the pier which is only about 15 minutes away so long as the tunnel is open. philw1776 Posted December 20, 2017 #3 Share Posted December 20, 2017 Amsterdam, arrived at 8AM on Viking River. They took us to the restaurant where we had breakfast with all the folks ending their cruise. Before we finished our room was ready. Arrived too late on VO to see how they handled it. geffric Posted December 20, 2017 #4 Share Posted December 20, 2017 I too am unable to tell you about arriving in Miami but I did take the Viking Star from San Juan and can relate that experience. We were able to leave our baggage with porters at 10 am but not allowed on the ship. we were allowed to check in and get on the ship at noon, we could go to our room but luggage was not there until much later ; then we had lunch and explored the ship . Ungodly perhaps but it beats the rush hour gridlock. BTW, take one worked and I left you a reply there. Have a wonderful adventure!
CharTrav Posted December 21, 2017 Author #6 Share Posted December 21, 2017 Thanks all. Two lessons today. One - this iPhone app has some definite quirks. Go look at my reply to Peregrina to my “Take 1” and see what lead to this crazy disjointed post. Two - don’t sweat the small stuff. Just chill and make sure to approach packing in a sane way, no different than when I pack for one of my week long standards conferences: a ritual that involves loading up a laundry basket and throwing things on the spare bed as I remember things I’ll need on a vacation. The bed routine starts next week; the basket is the week after. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
bellemere Posted December 21, 2017 #7 Share Posted December 21, 2017 Just off the Viking Sky in Miami. We flew in a day early. We were not allowed to board the ship on the next day until 11:00. We arrived around 11:30 and went right on the ship. You were encouraged to go to the World Café for lunch which we did. Our room was scheduled to be available at 2:00. Since we had only two roller suitcases, we did not leave our luggage with the porters outside the terminal but took them on the ship ourselves. Once on the ship, they tagged the suitcases for us and placed them in the room outside the main restaurant. We were told to come back and get them at 1:30. Passengers were sitting all over the ship. Little before 1:30 we returned and got our suitcases and were told we could see if our cabin was ready. It was and we quickly unpacked.
