Eric Lanlards Afternoon Tea on Brittania

I liked it but agree that the scones were too big & heavy. The "free" afternoon tea was ok but yes it was quite ordinary & on Britannia, I got the impression that the restaurant staff were herding people & trying to get them to sit together which was very odd!

They want you to sit together as it is easier to serve everyone. They are not criss crossing the restaurant with platters of food. It also makes it easier to see who has been served and who is waiting. Remember they only have 45 minutes.

I understand that but some people want to sit on their own at a table by themselves & not share the experience with a table of other people. We are happy to socialise but we like to eat a deux! [emoji4]

We are the totally opposite, as I use a mobility scooter they want me to sit at a 2 away from everyone else. We always say no we want a large table. We both hate tables for 2 :)

And there are very few tables for 2 anyway.

I agree. It is a shame that they don't ask if you would prefer a table for two before 'forcing' you to join a larger table. We also prefer to sit together, whether it's afternoon tea or anything else, but not everyone does (as has already been stated by daiB). It's one of the reasons over the years we haven't gone to many afternoon teas, which is a shame as they are, usually, nice experiences.

I will be sailing on Ventura in a few weeks' time so was curious about the afternoon tea.

Interesting feedback on this thread but anyone with recent experience on Ventura?

I want to try this just for the experience but only if the quality of food served is within expectations.

Also, any tips? Do they offer discount deals later in the cruise especially if bookings are below expectations. Or perhaps it tends to be fully booked and I need to book ahead of time. It is a 12 day cruise with plenty of sea days.

I’m cruising in October and we have a lot of sea days. So I’m going to book the afternoon tea at the beginning of the cruise to see what it is like and if we like it we will book again at the end. If not we will not. But I do like to try everything once.

I can not compare anything with the MDR or buffet as I never use them. Do not hear too well so choose a smaller environment. The Epicurean I like on all the ships it is on and the breakfast and dinners are great but need changing more regularly especially for those who cruise often. Afternoon tea was one major fail for me. It seemed rushed and not quite balanced.

My wife and I really enjoyed it. The food was generally very good.Its not the finest afternoon tea you can get but some nice original cakes and good value for money. If you want something to do for a couple of hours on a cold windy seaday from Southampton then I'd say go for it.

Probably wouldn't do it again but glad we did.

Yes, there are sweet items, but we either didn't eat them all, or left them completely. We still enjoyed the experience, and, in fact, have experienced both menus.

 

We would definitely do it again.
