US Customs

Do we go though US customs in Dublin airport instead of when landing in USA?
Yes. Dublin has Pre Clearance so you will clear in Ireland prior to departure.
More importantly for time-saving, you will also clear US immigration in Dublin. That, rather than customs, is usually the real time-waster if you have to clear in the conventional way after arriving in the US.

What is this “pre clearance”?

You don’t have to show passport at jfk?

A quick search:

https://www.cbp.gov/border-security/ports-entry/operations/preclearance

Pre-clearence is a procedure where you meet your Immigration and Customs requirements at an airport outside the US. There are about 15 such airports. The flight to the US thus becomes a domestic flight.

No, you wouldn't be showing your passport at JFK.

I can vouch personally for this. As non-US citizens, we flew Dublin to Boston and had all the security and immigration done before departing Dublin. As it is then considered a domestic flight, on arrival at Logan, we just collected our bags and exited the airport.

Presumably the same applies at JFK.

Remember though, that as the flight is classed as a domestic flight, there is no 'duty free' sold on board (U.S. customs requirement). so make your purchases in Dublin Duty Free before boarding (but after clearing the initial security check).

The secondary security check (for US Preclearance) is ok with liquids over 100ml (ie. bottles of liquor!) so you can buy in the Duty Free shop.
