Happy New Year to all fellow cruisers,

Travelling on Oceanas repositioning cruise in March and are visiting Marseille. A new port for us anyone any suggestions of places to visit or shore excursions or even what to do in port.

Interested in any answers as we are also visiting Marseille for the first time this year but on Celebrity

Was thinking of just doing the HOHO as that’s often useful in a new city

If seeking a memorable experience of Marseille, then consider lunch at L-Epuisette. Book in advance for the table/s at the top end of the restaurant.

There is a little train that rakes you round. However we did a private tour to Aix en Provence and Cassis which was great.

It is very easy to get around on public transport. There is also a boat which leaves from the Vieux Port and goes to Chateau d'If and Ike de Frouelle where we had a lovely lunch beside the sea.

Or, you can visit the museum.

We did the Oceana re-positioning last year and one of the stops was Marseille, We had a nice walk around the port and caught the little land train up to the church (sorry can't remember the name) but the views were great even though the weather wasn't that good.

The church is Ste Marie La Grande.

Do they do better chips than the buffet?

No idea, as have never ordered "Chips" in the restaurant or tried in a ship's buffet.

If leading a sheltered life equates to not eating "Chips" with Bourbaise at L-Epuisette, then so be it.

It appears your cultured pallet may extend to "Chips" with everything. One understands why you have the need for your take on a particular gourmet "side" when dining fine.

Marseilles itself is not particularly pretty, I did not like it at all ...maybe use as a jump off point for other Provence towns...I have not been myself but have heard that Cassis is lovely and not too hard to get to.

I would agree with the sentiments here. Cassis is indeed a very pretty old fishing village - now catering very much to tourism but with some lovely harbour side cafes. I would certainly book a half day excursion if offered (ours was from Toulon so unsure of timings from Marseilles) and just spend an hour or two looking round Marseilles to fill the day.
