Hey Cotton,

Question for you all. Now seeing as how we are from the Great White North. I would love to get a hold of some of those famous Mardi Gras that we see everyone wearing during the parade. Do those stores sell them when it is not Mardi Gras? Do I really have to flash someone to get some!!!! LOL.

No, you don't have to "Flash" to get them. BUT! To each his/her own.:D We buy our beads here... www.beadsbythedozen.com But There are a number of other places to buy them on-line. Do NOT buy beads in/near the French Quarter. The prices there are ridiculous.

Isabelle,

You will get the beads all year round but ordering online or a special store in NO is much cheaper than buying some in the souvenier shops in the FQ.

If you can´t get enough of Mardi Gras go over to Blaine Kern´s Mardi Gras World

http://www.mardigrasworld.com/

The tour is $15 including a piece of King Cake and Coffee. A nice bead is your ticket. You will see a short film at the beginning and can try on some costumes (and take photos of course). The floats and props are really overwhelming.´

Take the free ferry at the end of Canal St to Algiers Point (gives you a nice short ride on the Mississippi River too). There´s a free shuttle bus at the ferry station to Mardi Gras World. You can´t miss the busses.

If you are going on a cruise from NO, there is a Mardi Gras store in the Riverwalk mall right next to the pier. You can get anything Mardi Gras you would like.

That was an Accent Annex store, don't know what it is now but the prices are jacked! Gonna be there tomorrow.

Isablle,

We´ve been on a Christmas Parade in Lafayette and my little one (now 5 y.) picked up and up and up. We got about 10 during our cruise on the Mississippi Queen (she got them from everyone at our table), 3 at Mardi Gras World and about another 50 at the parade. They worked quite well stuffing my bags :) .

Hey Steamboats, I have been looking around the N/O web sites, and I figure if we go to Harrahs and do that Mardi gras tour thing I should be able to get some freebies. I can just imagine your 5 year old thought she was in heaven with all that jewerly LOL. My daugher is 22 and she wants some too.

Isabelle,

Yes, you might get some freebies at Harrah´s. With a 5 year old I haven´t been there (anyway I´m maybe the only person staying in Las Vegas for 5 days without spending a single cent in a slot machine :) ). If you don´t get any, the Canal St. ferry is right across the street of the casino :D .

Steamboats, can you get beads by going to the ferry terminal? You kinda confused me with that one. Las Vegas.... haven't been there in years. Have fun and are you sure not even a nickel in the machines LOL

Isabelle,

Sorry for confusing you. I just wanted to say if you don´t get any beads at Harrah´s you still can take the ferry to Mardi Gras World :) . I´ve been to Las Vegas last year with lots of troubles with our flights and bags (which arrived 30 min prior to a formal dinner) .

Give me your address and I can hook you up with beads, beads and more beads...every year since 98 my folks have brought me about 50 POUNDS of beads they get at the Endymion Ball...and that is usaully just my THIRD of their overall take. I take the rare and interesting ones and let my daughter play with them but the rest...ugh, I am running out of room!

If you really do want to get rid of some beads, I would love to get some. We have 70 people signed up for our Meet n Mingle....it would be fun to throw some to everyone! Email me if you are interested still...thanks!

Hey Isabelle. Sorry, I haven't been around. Took a little trip out to L.A. to visit daughter.

But - looks like you got lots of good advice. I would agree with ordering beads online from one of the sites provided. MUCH less expensive than buying in N.O. - although (unless you want the really fancy beads), you can pick up a bag of 50 for about $6 at most of the shops in the Quarter, and even cheaper than that at the French Market at the end of Decatur.

FYI - You don't get to flash except during Mardi Gras! You could be arrested any other time of the year. Really.:D

Been on Bourbon Street several times outside of Mardi Gras and a lot of flashing goin on. Police in plain site no arrests.

:D Then the flash must've been quicker than the policeman's eye! (It really is a misdemeanor.) It is ALL the time, but at Mardi Gras, they definitely turn a blind eye.

There is rarely any bead-tossing other than at Mardi Gras - or one of the other celebrations, like St. Pat's Parade. Now, if folks are flashing just to flash.........?:D

Thanks for the advise Cotton, but I was really just joking when I said I would flash for beads. I'm getting a little too old for that kinda thing. LOL. Thanks for the advise on where to buy them by the bag full. My daughter will just love that. While I'm yakking here. Can you give me the low down on the Comfort Inn and Suites on Barrone? When I talked to the lady on the phone she was so nice, I just hope the hotel is half as nice. Thanks, Isabelle

Hey, I knew you were kiddin'. :D The Comfort Suites on Barrone.....located in the CBD, not a bad location, fairly close to the Quarter. Of course, we're a 'walking city', so everybody gets used to it, and you'll be pretty close to everything. I've been inside the hotel only once, to meet a friend at the bar for a drink. Seemed nice, was clean. Don't know for sure about the rooms, but the friend said it was spacious and had microwave, fridge, and other amenities. This guy's a little bit 'picky', so if it was ok with him, I'm sure it would be fine.

I didn't notice WHEN you'll be coming down our way. If you have time, and haven't already done so, I'd strongly recommend you order the complimentary "Good Times Guide". I got one a few weeks back - some really good coupons in it this year. ENJOY our city.

Thank you so much Cotton, I have already ordered the Good Times guide about 2-3 weeks ago and am waiting patiently for it. We will be down in NO on October 1st and cannot wait to see your beautiful city. There seems so much to do that I'm not sure if I'm going to be satisfied with only being there for 2 days after our cruise. My husband had me check the internet to see if there really was a "House of the rising sun", to his dissapointment its only a bed and breakfast. Oh well. Isabelle:)
