Easy tram/train instructions Naples port to Herculaneum

Hi all...going to be in Naples end of this month. With the change in their ticket format it has gotten kind of confusing.

We want to head of the ship and buy tickets to use the tram to get us to the train station. We want to get off at Herculaneum. Then get back on to head to Sorrento. We have ferry tickets to get us back to the ship.

Does anyone have any simple instructions including the type of ticket we will need to buy to make this trek.

Thanks so much for any help!

There are several places to check for tickets, starting with the newsstand in the cruise terminal building. They may or may not have what you need but you can ask.

If that doesn't work, close to the street you'll see the Ontanto tour office, they also sell tickets, you can try there.

If both of these fail you can go to the newsstand across the street (on Via Cristoforo Colombo) and ask there.

The ideal ticket would be the NA-2 Integrato, which costs 2,50 euro. This ticket covers both the bus (there is no tram right now due to road construction) to the train station as well as the train to Ercolano Scavi.

If you can't purchase this ticket, just get a one euro Urbano Napoli Aziendale ticket to cover the bus to the train station. At Porta Nolana station you can buy the ticket to Ercolano Scavi (NA-2 Aziendale, 2 euro) as well as the ticket you'll need to go from Ercolano Scavi to Sorrento, which is the AC-4 Aziendale, 2,70 euro.

To get to the station, walk out to the street (Via Cristoforo Colombo) and take bus #151 to Porta Nolana. This will be the first stop after the bus makes a left turn from Cristoforo Colombo onto Corso Garibaldi.

Great news, forget all the trains, busses, etc.

Just got off NCL 12 day cruise, have always wanted to see Herculaneum, but the process has been convoluted and expensive. Last time we did a ship shore excursion to Pompeii, it was drawn out and I felt too expensive.

When we got off the cruise ship 2 weeks ago, just outside the port building, you get hit up by all the taxi salesmen first.

They showed us their price list brochure with the price to Herculaneum as $90E for 2 people. They would drop you off and pick you up 2 hours later. To Pompeii was $120E for 2.

We continued on in the parking lot, and found pompeisightseeing dot com.

They have small busses to both Pompeii, Herculaneum, and to the Ruins of Stabiae, departs from there at 10AM, and every hour til 1800. They have the returns from each of these also hourly, just outside the entry.

So you can spend as long as you like, and just catch which ever return you want.

The best thing, the price, round trip: For Herculaneum, its $10E per person.

Pompeii $15E pp., they also offer guided tours here for $15E pp, 10 maximum.

To Herculaneum, Pompeii and The Ruins of Stabiae it $25E pp.

They have a price/time list all printed out for you.

The cruise ships are minimum of $79 per person and up, and not worth it.

This is only an hour at Herculaneum, forced shopping stop, and 1 hour is not long enough to see everything.

I would suggest 3 hours at Herculaneum.

Also, the bus departing at 11AM was full, so they put us in a private MB car, and had a driver take us there and pick us up. Can not beat that.

The vehicles are all newer, 10-12 passenger, not a huge coach bus, and we were very pleased with their service. The process for busses, trains, etc. are not very appealing.

There were a few other companies offering this similar service, but this company had more options, and better prices and transit times. :)

I wish there were a half-day tour from Sorrento to Herculaneum. Haven't been able to find one. Our ship (Regent) does an included tour to Pompeii, but it would be iffy for my husband to do Pompeii, so we're willing to pay to see Herculaneum, a presumably easier walking experience.

Thank you so much for posting this. Looks like what we need. We are on Viking and get a free "overview tour of Naples". But, we want to do Pompeii or Herculaneum and maybe see some of Naples. This sounds like a great option.

Thanks for posting.
