Anyone close to retirement? / when do you start counting the days?

Made my health benefits, can leave anytime, but new job just got interesting and busy, so my TA cruise in october was supposed to be my swan song, but may go back to work after the 28 day cruise, maybe reduced hours, just don't know!

It is hard to make that final decision to retire for some of us. Health insurance is one of those factors. My health insurance ends when I retire. We will have to purchase some backup insurance along with Medicare. My husband has been on disability for 11 years and he has health issues although much less than when he first gone sick. Back then the insurance company paid out $100,000 one year and $40,000 the next year for his two illnesses. That does not include what we paid out. My daughter had a friend who was only 31 that had 6 million dollars in health bills. She spent the last two years of her life in a hospital. She died one year ago. Sorry to add something so sad but it is a thought for many people.

I am 68 and will be retiring as a college professor in Psychology the end of this Fall semester. It has been a great job with great people buy as BB said "The thrill is gone". It is unfortunate that many people do not prepare financially and psychologically for retirement. People can really die from boredom. From what i have read on this board you all have a plan for your retirement.

I already volunteer with AARP teaching seniors how to use Facebook and Twitter and I plan on training my Standard Poodle to be a therapy dog so we can visit nursing homes and hospitals . That will take a while as she is 3 years old and still has a puppy brain. :rolleyes:

No, thank God! It was mostly northern Louisiana and areas south where the rivers overflowed. We are in Kansas City right now. Janice got an invite from Harrahs. Very nice place!

I did that last year and I'm really enjoying less stress and no common core! Cruising as much as possible!😊

Technically I retire on April 1st :) I have been on vacation since Jan 26 (one great perk at my job). Like others I put an app on my phone the day I submitted my paperwork. Now we just have to wait another year for my husband to turn 55 and semi retire (someone has to pay for our vacations :cool: )

In the Wausau area, today they are to get 12 to 15 inches of snow. My parents grew up in the area. I lived in Milwaukee from the time I was a kid to age 35. Then my family and I moved to Maryland about 29 years ago for work.

Hubby was fired two years from retirement. Has worked part-time since. His countdown was blown out of the water! I retired last year from a very stressful job. There is a lot of excitement around the idea of retirement, but it depends on the individual as to what retirement really means. We enjoy a combination of working non-stress jobs, traveling, and, most of all, spending time together. Hope yours goes the way you want!

I agree with you. Retirement is different for each person and couple. My friend's husband just retired and she said she did not know what he was going to do with his time. She has been retired for a while because she got sick several years ago. She was concerned about how their lives will change now that he will be home. Then I was talking to another teacher who had two children in her 40's and she said that she will be working until she is 70 so she finish paying for their college. My husband (he became disabled 11 years ago after two illnesses) and I have discussed about when I will retire. I still enjoy my job and he does the housework so it will be for next couple of years. I know that we will be helping my daughter and son-in-law with their children by getting them to school and taking care of them after school. Maybe I will work parttime but we shall see what happens. Of course we will fit in some cruising and maybe get to Europe one day.

My countdown started in October 2015 when I bought a jar and a bag of marbles. I filled the jar with 44 marbles, each marble representing a month until I planned to retire. At the end of each month, I take a marble out of the jar and when I've lost all my marbles I'm out of there.

 

Recently, I did the math and have decided I can go a few months earlier so will actually have a few marbles left...not a bad thing!

 

l have to say I'm amazed at the longevity of this thread...it started in 2009 and is still going strong. I wonder how many of the folks who posted in the first couple of years have now retired?

We had posted on here, then retired Oct. 31, 2012 and have been traveling the world ever since and enjoying it, for 43 months.

We are booked out till March 2018 and looking to add on as things become available.

Sacksilver, that sounded funny at first about putting the marbles in the jar. After I thought about it a while, it did make sense. It reminded me of when a person sometimes goes to a calendar, and marks off each day with an X, knowing that each day is getting them closer, to what their looking forward to.

 

I was talking to one of the girls in HR today, thinking she would know MORE than what I would, about our moving. Looks like she knows about the same as myself, the first quarter in 17, but since we have a very large annual meeting (people flying in to the airport that is very CLOSE to our office now, but will NOT be, after the move to Kansas) in March. So maybe the 1st of April. I want to plan for a cruise, but I want to get my retirement out of the way first, but not more than a month before moving time.

 

I do love my job as a receptionist at Dairy Farmers of America, working at the corporate office.
