Looks like Princess will have to wait LONGER for a new ship...

Knowing Jo wouldn't care, I have altered his design slightly- trimmed off a deck and lengthened the ship by adding a slight mid section... the vessel is better looking proportionately now.

Interesting... Though I think Princess wouldn't have dark tinted windows. Could you do this with that aquamarine color Princess has for the balcony dividers and glass railings? I think that would make this ship design look splendid! :)

You mean something like this? I have added a panoramic glass elevator bank at the stern.

Ship design belongs to marinearchit, with minor alterations by me.

^ Actually, the shaft was put into former 'white' area, not over any aft cabins that were previously there. Also, I thought an aft bank of glass elevators would be amazing- able to see all the way forward and the wake at the same time.

Also, I flipped the Sea Witch, she was pointing in the wrong direction originally.

The only thing I'd worry about is the added weight of the elevator machinery that far aft and having elevator lobbies so close to premium-priced cabins.

I did a little work on the design aswell...

NewClass5.jpg

Kept the extra deck, since the increased width allows it. All the additional income from more cabins is a great plus. I did, however, keep the design lengthened.

NewClass5_rooms.jpg

All the Princess trademarks are there, as well as some new additions:

Dining:

Panoramic Aft DR: Offers windows over the ship's wake and on port and starboard. This room serves as the Traditional DR. Serviced by a galley positioned on the deck below.

Anytime DR 1&2: Nothing that new here. Just the anytime DRs. DR1 serviced by the same galley as the Traditional DR. DR2 serviced by a galley on the deck below.

Crown Grill and the New Restaurant/Lounge/Bar concept: Both on the Upper Promenade deck, share a galley positioned between them. The galley also protrudes slightly into the center of each restaurant.

Sabatinis now has panoramic aft windows. Located on the Upper Promenade Deck.

Cafe Caribe and Horizon Court are pretty much the same. HC now utilizes a market concept.

Open Air Lido Restaurant is a new concept. A light fare cafe. Located around the Aft Pool.

Lido Grill is still by the main pool.

The Piazza

Contains all of the current amenities. Significant room for new additions. On the top deck of the Piazza there is now an extension to the outside Upper Promenade Deck.

Lounges/Bars/Entertainment

Wheelhouse Bar: Nothing too new here.

New Concept Intimate Bar: A new addition. Inspired by the Wheelhouse Bar but with a different atmosphere. I'm thinking something akin to the Martini Bar or Micheal's Club on Celebrity

Explorers Lounge: Expanded from the current concept.

New Lounge Concept: A new space for a lounge of club off of the Piazza.

Club Fusion: Expanded from the current concept.

Churchill Lounge: Expanded and now includes exterior windows.

Princess Theater: Significantly expanded considering the current design does not work well with crowding.

Adagio: Retaining the current concept.

Skywalkers: Retaining the current concept.

Casino: Expanded and a more upscale atmosphere.

Kids&Teen Center

Leisure

Aft Pool/Nightclub concept: A significantly expanded aft pool. Inspired by Epic's Spice H2O which allows it to transform at night.

MUTS Pool: Kept about the same size generally. A smaller pool and expanded seating. Integrated better with the HC.

Expanded main pool: Significantly expanded area with Solstice-like cabanas at each end.

Lotus Spa: Expanded from the current concept.

Lotus Pool & The Sanctuary: Pool is now expanded and enclosed with a new concept dome. Both the walls and ceiling have the ability to retract.

Well that's it in a nutshell. Hopefully I didn't forget anything.

I worked for the CCL corporate new build group for a number of years and the current plan is to keep cost at a minimum by using the a similar platform for all the company’s various lines wherever possible (E.g. Queen Victoria is a Hal ship design) so I would be extremely surprised to see a blank sheet design for Princess, Fincanteiri will likely use the Dream as a concept and Princessize it to meet the different business model.

Very nice. A few points to make it look more authentic:

Make the bridge windows and the top, lido deck windows dark. This should also be done to the the very top windows on the ship (the "Viking Crown Lounge" equivalent looking thingie with the MUTS pool and the wing windows just aft of the smoke stack). The windows should be darkened towards the bow at the top as well. Public areas have to have dark tinted windows I notice. I would make the super structure that is slanted at the top of the ship just forward of the main pool area CONTINUE all the way to the pool deck.

These are of course just suggestions. Take em or leave em. Could you also make a cropped picture of the ship just above the water line?

The design looks great though!

Thus far, Princess has been the one line under the Carnival banner that has withstood cloning, so I would be surprised for it to begin now...

I still envision a larger 'Gem class' vessel- not starting from scratch, just taking what works and lengthening and expanding upon the hull design- wouldn't be that hard.

I agree. It wouldn't take much lengthening / widening / heightening in combination to make the ship 130,000+ GRT. Aren't the Gem class ships prone to some top heaviness? Maybe a simple widening and slight lengthening is all that we will see?

The problem wasn't so much top-heaviness, it was more or less an imbalance in weight between forward and aft. Skywalkers being so far aft caused a significant amount of stress on the hull at midships. I'm not sure of the ship, but I know one of the earlier Grand class actually had windows on the promenade deck pop out of their frames during heavy seas. This is the reason that Skywalkers has been moved forward.

The older Grand class ships are plagued with this imbalance, which can cause them to roll quite heavily at times. For example, on the final night of my cruise on the CB, we hit slightly rough seas. They were nothing spectacular, just slightly larger then usual. Well, that thing moved terribly. It was especially noticeable in the DR at the aft of the ship.

Once you moved forward she was not moving as much. I imagine this as being a direct result of the heavy stern.

As for the design I posted, I'm hoping to do some fine-tuning on it tomorrow. Don't have any more time tonight.

Our Golden Princess trans-Atlantic, 8-02, was rough West of the Azores, and we had windows popping out along Prom Deck, due to ship's flexing.

Roughest ride was forward, with extreme bow-slap. The elevator cabins in the forward bank was banging about loudly in their shafts.

That particular trip was 6 hrs late into New York City due to slowing for the storms.

I was reading all the reviews on this site for the new Carnival Dream. No one on the Transatlantic cruises comments on the ship riding rough. Reviews were generally mixed much like any Princess cruise is. The one thing I like about Princess and Carnival is they have adequate elevators for the number of people on board. We had real problem on our Explorer of the Sea cruise due to them having far fewer elevators than the Crown Princess has. We should know soon on the announcement.

I was on the Grand Princess in the Caribbean about 6 or 7 years ago. It was all smooth sailing until the last evening. It got real choppy and my brothers and I were playing in the indoor pool. Fun as hell. But that ship did move a whole lot but I have nothing to compare it to since that was the only time I had experienced bad weather on a ship before. *knock on wood*

^ With that in mind, I can't imagine a Trans-Atlantic crossing being all that nice aboard one of the original Grand vessels...

Took the Grand Princess from Fort Lauderdale to Europe. Smooth as glass. Could hardly tell the ship was moving.

Other's experience may vary.

Yeah...

I heard that the Caribbean Princess + the Gem class ships are unstable because they have an added passenger deck. Maybe this problem is compounded on the Caribbean Princess because the Skywalk thingie-ma-bob at being so far aft and elevated?

The Caribbean Princess has the extra deck more than the previous grand class ship and that skywalkers hanging off the rear that made it unstable in rough seas. They discontinued that skywalker location on all ships that followed. I did a Star Princess transatlantic in 5/05 and we had rough seas but I thought it sailed OK, we did miss the Azores due to the bad weather.

Remember when the Star caught fire? That was ridiculous!

Skywalkers made it unstable in rough seas??

Where did you hear that?

Colo Cruiser,

It didn't make the ships unstable in the sense that they are dangerous. The weight distribution from the aft location just made the ships more prone to movement. There was also that hull stress/flexing issue mentioned earlier in the thread.

Aside from attempting to remedy this on the newer ships, they were able to add Adagio. So, IMO, the new ships made out well.
