Colo Cruiser Posted December 5, 2009 #51 Share Posted December 5, 2009 Colo Cruiser, It didn't make the ships unstable in the sense that they are dangerous. The weight distribution from the aft location just made the ships more prone to movement. There was also that hull stress/flexing issue mentioned earlier in the thread. Aside from attempting to remedy this on the newer ships, they were able to add Adagio. So, IMO, the new ships made out well. Here I thought the whole point was just to get rid of the shopping cart handle look and make the ships more pleasing to the eye? Still have never heard this before and wonder where it came from. Or just speculation?
Druke I Posted December 5, 2009 #52 Share Posted December 5, 2009 We've enjoyed your possible ship variations. Just for drill, how about working up a modernized Coral Princess, somewhere in the 90,000 GRT 1,800 PAX range, incorporating some of the newer Princess features? Thanks. marinearchit Posted December 5, 2009 #53 Share Posted December 5, 2009 Colo Cruiser, That could also be a large factor in the movement of Skywalkers. It'd be nice to get info on this from the captain of the Crown, as she's the first to have the repositioned Skywalkers. I'd also like to hear what the captain of CB says, considering she has the original Skywalkers placement AND the added Riviera deck. Druke, Sure! I'll definitely give it a try. sempronialou Posted December 5, 2009 #55 Share Posted December 5, 2009 It would be nice if they had a nice running/walking track or at least make the promenade deck all one level rather than having to climb up and down the stairs when you get to the forward of the ship. That was my experience on the CB and probably will be the same on the Emerald come next year. They could also widen the deck so people who want to walk at their leisure or stand look out don't have to move out of the way of people running or vice versa. I really would prefer just a track dedicated for people who want to exercise in that manner, especially up top so you can look over the ocean as you walk or run. pseudochicken Posted December 5, 2009 Author #58 Share Posted December 5, 2009 Wouldn't it be nice to see cruise lines expand the middle size ships (90,000 tons) instead of making continuously bigger and bigger ships? MSC seems to be the only line doing that...

Actually although they have no Riveria Deck Diamond/Sapphire were the first to get the new relocated Skywalkers. ;) I really don't believe Riviera deck makes a difference. ISLANDCRUSO Posted December 6, 2009 #64 Share Posted December 6, 2009 Wasn`t the reason Skywalkers was moved down to Criticism by the trade of the shopping trolley look and also to allow the Aft pool more sunlight !
marinearchit Posted December 6, 2009 #65 Share Posted December 6, 2009 To jump back in this thread a bit, here's that first design shown "in the water"... Also, here's that modified Coral Class design. The current Coral class, to me, seem like an odd Sun class/Grand class hybrid. Exterior wise, I'm not too much of a fan. I did quite a bit of redesign on the plans, and here's what I came up with... To begin, I retained the new lifeboat configuration. I'm quite a big fan of the fully-utilized exterior promenade which it frees up. Added another deck of balconies, which increases her GRT a bit. Dining Anytime DR (panoramic) Traditional DR Bayou Cafe & Steakhouse-retained from the current Coral class Sabatinis Horizon Court-using action stations. Shares an exterior aft deck with Cafe Caribe Cafe Caribe Entertainment Explorers Lounge (panoramic)-Expanded and with views from Starbord, Aft, and Port. Grand Casino-enlarged area with an increased "lounge" feel Wheelhouse Bar New Concept Intimate Lounge-similar to Wheelhouse Bar. Inspired by Michael's Club and the Martini Bar on Celebrity. Showlounge-similar to what is currently on the Coral class Princess Theater Adagio & Exterior aft bar-carried over from the Grand class. Enlarged and now includes an aft bar. Upper Piazza Bar- on the third level of the Piazza. Extends onto the exterior promenade deck. Leisure The Sanctuary-Enlarged and expanded around the second level of the enclosed Lotus pool Lotus Spa Lotus Pool Main Pool Sports Courts & Splash pool-integrated with the kids&teen centers Aft Pool & MUTS-I'm thinking something along the lines of an Infinity pool, but that may be a bit too much. Hopefully I didn't forget much. Just tell me if I did.
Druke I Posted December 6, 2009 #66 Share Posted December 6, 2009 Thanks. I'm not yet sold on the new lifeboat placement - I personally like open promenade decks.

marinearchit Posted December 6, 2009 #69 Share Posted December 6, 2009 I'm really not a fan of the tail either, but they offer a great benefit. They draw water down to the props and increase efficiency. Most new builds have some form of one, most pronounced being on the Solstice Class (but I think it looks good on those ships). RickEk Posted December 6, 2009 #72 Share Posted December 6, 2009 You truly are a marine architect. I've enjoyed both your designs. I especially like the open Promenade deck, devoid of the overhead lifeboats. And you made it wrap-around the bow on the revised Coral-class!... Excellent! (I still can't believe that RCCL couldn't build a proper outside Promenade deck on their Oasis-class... shame on them!) Also, both ships look very streamlined. One criticism that I have (which will probably be moot) is that Princess has stayed away from the azipod bandwagon, but I'm sure they're getting more reliable and are obviously the wave of the future for the main propulsion on new-builds... oh and ps. I've taken the liberty of forwarding them to some friends that I have at Princess HQ...

marinearchit Posted December 6, 2009 #74 Share Posted December 6, 2009 Thanks everyone! Comments are extremely appreciated. Rick, I really am flattered! Thank you. As for the azipods, I'm sensing that when Princess makes a jump to a new class they'll pick up the system. I always assumed they preferred to keep the traditional screw propulsion because it was part of the Grand/Caribbean/Gem design and worked well for them. It may have been an issue of a redesigned power plant or altered aft hull design, I'm not too sure. Hopefully we'll see some real evolution with a new class. tntornadox Posted December 7, 2009 #75 Share Posted December 7, 2009 It must be a brand decision regarding the power plants aboard the ships- CCL has stayed true to traditional propellers- even on the new Dream class while other brands within Carnival Corporation use azipods exclusively (Cunard)... so who knows?
