Ships at Night............Your shots?

Recommended Posts

Don't have as many shots OF ships at night, but I have a lot ON ships at night.

Here's a shot of a ship - Celebration - in Cozumel, taken years ago with my Sony 717 balanced on a rail:

are these types of shots possible on a regular digital camera?

or do you need the professional bulky ones

i have a casio that has a setting for natrual light

i wonder if that would work

The shots are possible if a.) you can turn off the flash; b.) the camera can focus in low to no light; c.) you have, even if it is minimal, control over the f-stop (lens opening) and shutter speed; and d.) and most important, you brace the camera on something, such as a railing, bulkhead, floor, or tripod so that camera does not move at all, as your exposures will likely be long, possibly as much as a second or longer, depending on the camera.

Sure, you don't have as many options available. A tripod or Monopod is a great help or rest the camera on a steady surface.

Decent hand-held shots can be made too. This one was from an Olympus 1030SW (point and shoot), hand held. Exposure at 1.6 seconds. that is a LONG time for hand held!

Two photos live from the P&O Oceana at night take during the cruise, I hear the weather is very bad back in the UK, Delboy. Lovely weather here today in Martinique (different stop from cruise schedule) St Lucia tomorrow and still no snow!!! :D Wished we could stay onboard for another month!!!

Soblue,

Thanks for the photo's Of Oceana, wish I was with you on board, we went to the Norwegian fields last June on Oceana and had great weather and a great cruise.

Just thought I would add a photo to show what you may be missing at home, I am sure your homesick. Lol.

Sorry everybody realise this photois not a cruise ship at night, but at least its night time.4192778161_6836a5a618.jpg

It's going to be very cold for us back in the UK. :(

Being a lovely day in St Lucia today, it's now 4.20pm with the evening sun

Going to do some more night shots tonight

Also have plenty of new photos to post on the board when I'm back

Best wishes Andrew

You took that shot hand held at 1.6 seconds? You have a very steady hand!
