Was there a ship in Labadee when quake hit?

Deep fissures were also reported by survivors of the New Madrid (Missouri) Quakes in 1911/1912. Rare but it does happen.

Sorry, I meant to say the earthquake in Indonesia back in October last year. Here is the link. Actually it was 400 people that were swallowed up.

Great! Now I'm really going to have nightmares tonight!

DC... do you remember the Joshua Tree quake back in 00 or so? We were rolling in Newport Beach, miles away. A little scary in the middle of the night.

Are you taking about the Landers Quake, that happened in 1992. The shockwave that hit a second before the main shaking was something I can't describe. I can only say it was like a Sonic Boom magnified 3 x's or more. Being awakened at 4 :30 in the am with a sound like that was something we had never experienced in my years here.

Reports were, the rupture was over 50 miles, crossed 3 fault lines. Now speaking of a possible warning shake, 2 months earlier, we had a 6.0 or something, so it could have been a pre shock.

The force of this quake, emptied out our pool by 4 inches, & into our house. Water level was below the tile and beginning of the concrete. It was felt all the way into AZ & NV. From this I can fully understand as you could the horrow the people in Haiti are going thru.

I lived in Central Ca. during the landers quake and felt it there also. During the Oct. 89 Loma Preada (sp?) we had the rolling ground and power outages all the way into the central valley. Point is, they can be felt for quite a ways.

I'm not. That kind of earthquake doesn't happen in this part of the world, but if some of you want to lose sleep over something, all kinds of things happen everyday. It won't happen on a beach in the Caribbean.

I was also on the Freedom of the Seas. My Husband and I were sitting in the casino and felt something weird. We looked at each other and said what the heck was that, and I told him it felt like a pack of elephants were running in the decks below us. When we returned to the room about 20 minutes later. CNN had a breaking story about the earthquake. We figured it out at that time that is what we must have felt.

We were also on the Freedom. Like the other poster said, the ship docked but left before anyone even got off. Didn't feel a thing...actually, I had gone back to the cabin around 4 for a nap. My husband had to come wake me up to tell me about the quake - and that was only after he saw CNN on.

We just made sure to email our familes to let them know it didn't affect us.

I was on the Freedom that day and we felt nothing. We did not dock. The weather was lousy. We were lucky and far away by the time it hit so the small wave after the event did not hurt us. Oh, the cruise was GREAT.

We actually did dock real early to load supplies but then left due to the weather that had torn up some of the beaches. If you were not on the dock side and up early you would not have known. None of the passengers were allowed off the ship. We would have been there at the time of the quake had we not left due to the weather. As it was we were off the coast of Haiti between Haiti and Cuba when it hit. What worried me was the tsumani watch that was issued. The Captain finally came on after several hours and said that sonar had not detected any underwater activity so that made me feel better.

:eek:Out of habit, I always check the cruise map on the TV when I'm in the cabin. Last Tuesday, I checked it just before heading up to the Diamond Lounge for happy hour at 5:00. We were located due West of Port au Prince. Sure enough, after getting a drink, the news of the quake was on CNN. As for rumblings on the lower decks, that was happening all week. The seas were bad all week, so the bow was going up and down a lot.
