Cove balcony vs. regular balcony

Just a little input on Cove Balcony....Dallas Morning News did a "mini-review" of Magic and mentioned the Coves. They offer great views and the writer suggests that if you like the whole ocean feel and being close....these are great. But the down sides mentioned were the noise....apparently being only 2 stories from the ocean, waves hitting the side of the ship can get loud; and the writer mentioned that there is a bit more feeling of movement, again, being close to the water line....so if you are prone to sickness, might want to consider that.

 

Sounds like a good option, I, personally will avoid the coves and go for the "full" balcony.

Yep- and we weren't bothered by the sound of the water at all. Less than in the back by the wake. Poor reporting I'm afraid.

Thinking of booking the Magic to the Med in June '11. I know the Magic is the sister ship to the Dream. What is the difference between the cove balcony rooms and a regular balcony room? Is it just the deck the room is on? Thanks.

 

I think it's a personal choice, we do regular balconies, when I booked the dream my PVP tried to get me to try a cove balcony but I passed even though they're cheaper I dont' think I'd like being that close to the water, even though hubby would have loved it

We have one booked for Thanksgiving on the Dream. I just hope the seas aren't too rough that they are forced to close the coves. Has anyone ever have this happen?

It's not my piece, but I don't think you can call it "poor reporting". I think the noise would be a personal choice. As far as the movement...I can't say with any expertise as to which his worse, higher or lower, and the writer didn't exactly bash the coves...I think the points were something given in order to make an informed decision.

 

Again...it's not my piece, but not sure you can just throw out a judgement and dismiss the writing simply because you happen to disagree with a point of it.

 

Again, I hope the points help the OP make an informed decision.

Don't know about the noise, but the lower the ship, the less movement...

Hi, it sounds like you had fun. We are thinking of booking room 2303 on the Magic. My question is ....Is there more of a chance to get seasick that close to the water. Thanks..

It is best to book a cove cabin in the front half of the the ship as the galley is right over the cove balcony rooms in the back half of the the ship- it can be noisy during the night and early morning when they are working and cleaning in the kitchen- some friends had great difficulty with this noise at night. The price is great for the cove balcony and we highly rec.

 

We are thinking of booking a cove balcony on Dream. I read some complaints on other threads about certain rooms (2441, 2400, 2414, 2375) because of noise, like you mentioned. Are those numbers towards the back? What numbers are closer to the front?

We had a cove balcony (2290 so midship) and we LOVE it. We have booked the same room again for this May on the Magic. It's private, close to the water, and so nice for shade since it is partially enclosed! It was really nice for the kids too because they loved to look out and see the fish. As for the motion and noise...we heard and felt neither. I felt way more motion and swaying eating in the Southern Nights dining room in the Magic than I did in the room. As for the waves...the only time I remember them ever closing the cove balconies is when there was a bad tropical storm because the waves were big enough they splashed over the sides - so they had to close them, but it was only for a day. And as someone else mentioned, the ones on the Magic do open on the sides but I think only the crew that comes in and cleans them have keys to open them up like that.

The regular balcony esp on deck 6 & 7 look right down on the lanai deck 5 & could be noisy & not much privacy.

 

Can't speak for deck 6 but the deck 7 balconies are wonderful and private even being above the promenade. If you want to hang over the railings you can see down but line of site (even from the hot tubs) doesn't allow people to look onto your private space. And when you are moving on water the sound of the sea crashing into the hull precludes sound from traveling from deck 5 to 7.

just came off the dream saturday,

 

I booked a 8b balcony cabin. Didn't like it at all because the lanai on the dream is a few decks down.

 

I like to sit out there at night and have a drink, just me and the ocean, or maybe my ipod. I find this very relaxing. I also like to sleep with the balcony door open and listen to the sounds of the waves.

 

Impossible on the dream however

 

the lanai sends tons of light into the cabin, also drunks come out of the casino or club hooting and hollering like people do at 3-4am when the club closes and they are drunk. Also, instead of looking down directly on the water you see this deck.

 

I would book the cove balcony, its cheaper and doesn't have any of these issues. My friends were booked in a 7c and I loved it and was jealous of them. We spent all our time hanging out in there room.

 

I echo your statements. We also chose a higher priced balcony cabin and all we saw outside was noisy kids in the hot tub. Next time it's a cover cabin or a different ship!

Loved our Cove on the Dream. If I was going to ever book another Balcony and they had a Cove that's were we would be. First time no motion sickness out of over 14 cruises

We just booked a Cove balcony on Dream a couple weeks ago. The last three cruises we have had an aft facing balcony - and I found it just too hot to spend as much time out there as I would like. So I am very excited to do a Cove and it is much less expensive. We booked cabin 2344 so I am hoping there won't be much noise from the galley above.

On our Breeze cruise I started in a Cove, moved to a Jr Suite, then to an OV and then back to the Cove - and I am so glad I did! The Cove is amazing! If I ever sailed on that class of ship again I would choose nothing but a Cove. Just watch the cabin location and make sure you are not directly under the galley due to possible noise issues!

Here is a video of our cove balcony on Carnival Magic 2409. The balcony between 2407 and 2409 could not be opened even though they had adjoining door on the inside. We loved the location.

Loved our Cove Balcony room #2297 on the Carnival Magic. We even got lucky and had no lifeboat above us for an even wider view. I enjoyed being so close to the water. We left the door open a few nights to hear the sound of waves. The only annoyance was disembarkment morning the catwalk was directly over our head. 2297 is the center over the rails in the picture. IMO Cove is the way to go.
