Cotton Posted February 7, 2005 #26 Share Posted February 7, 2005 I asked a cruise director once about the pg parties. She told me they check to see how many passengers are eligible for invitations, and then they decide where to have the party - in the main showroom if lots of past guests - or in one of the other lounges if not very many. Makes sense.
mikeymars Posted February 7, 2005 #27 Share Posted February 7, 2005 To be fair, some unit at Carnival does have some focus on past guests, because the benefits (albeit limited) go beyond the magazine and past guest party. Ergo, the "VIP privilege" discounts on other lines in the Carnival "family." As example, want to try out Cunard's Queen Mary II? If you've previously sailed on Carnival, you're immediately granted a 10% discount on your Cunard cabin. http://vip.worldsleadingcruiselines.com/vip/
MichelleP Posted February 7, 2005 #28 Share Posted February 7, 2005 We weren't invited to the past guest party on our last cruise. Although it was a 3-day on the Fascination - maybe too short for a past guest party? I know we were in their system as past guests because we got gold sail-and-sign cards, which indicate past guest status.

MichelleP Posted February 7, 2005 #34 Share Posted February 7, 2005 It may be a new thing because it was the first time I'd ever seen it. Our sail-and-sign cards were gold, as were my sister- and brother-in-law's (they were also past guests.) I saw a lot of the usual red, white, and blue cards, which is why ours stood out. My brother-in-law taught my husband how to play blackjack on the cruise and when he whipped out his gold sail-and-sign card, the dealer was astonished that he'd never been to the casino tables before, since he'd been a past guest. Rowan555 Posted February 7, 2005 #36 Share Posted February 7, 2005 We had the basic cards last week on Sensation. Seems odd that Carnival would go to the trouble of making two different color Sail and Sign cards.
Packers fan Posted February 7, 2005 #37 Share Posted February 7, 2005 Is it true that they only have the past guest parties on 5 day or more cruises? I was getting excited about our 3 day cruise and the party. DH thought I was nuts on our last cruise when I downed 4 champanes.........;)
Cotton Posted February 7, 2005 #38 Share Posted February 7, 2005 Yes - it is true.:o Past guest parties are held only on five night or longer cruises.
zydecocruiser Posted February 7, 2005 #39 Share Posted February 7, 2005 When I check the past guest box on the Fun Pass it tells me it can't find a record of my past cruises. I've checked and rechecked, and all of the information is correct and hasn't changed since the last 6 Carnival cruises. I've called three times and e-mailed Carnival and they just tell me not to worry about it - a glitch in the system - but I want my invitation. When I go to my Profile page on their website, it lists ALL my cruises. Any thoughts? I'd call Carnival again and specifically ask if the booking has your past guest number listed. If the number isn't associated with the booking, it used to let you check the box, but wouldn't save it. Of course, they may have hosed something else up. kdickers Posted February 8, 2005 #42 Share Posted February 8, 2005
Carnival doesn't give anything that is consided a perk other than the cocktail party for past guest. Want to feel good, go pay for a suite compared to other lines and see how little you get... Jim
Jim, I emailed you about some questions I had Celebration Verandah Suite. Ericknow32 Posted February 8, 2005 #43 Share Posted February 8, 2005 I mainly cruise with Royal Caribbean, which has fantastic past guest perks. I like them allot. I'm sorry but if I were in your positions I would write them and tell them that you would like some benefits. You all put allot of money into their pockets and I think you should get something for your loyalty.
tef43 Posted February 8, 2005 #44 Share Posted February 8, 2005 Carnival's business model is so successful, they do not have to stoop to bribes and trickery in order to entice people to sail again with them. The ships sail full anyway, why waste the money? It's just sound business practice, good for the bottom line, good for the shareholders.
FishTale Posted February 8, 2005 #45 Share Posted February 8, 2005 It's not bribes or trickery it is the feel good factor. I have a mortgage company and I order a lot of specialty advertising "stuff" (luckily I have an uncle in the biz so I get it at cost). For 3 or 4 dollars you can get some pretty nice printed specialty items, ie a nice sewing kit, mug, keychain etc. Those little item would go along way with past cruisers, I bet there would be a hundred threads on this board where everyone shares what free gift they got. Heck for the cost of the couple free drinks at the pg party Carnival could give easily give a nice gift. Just my $.

Airline frequent flier miles(Look how well they airlines are doing), Shopping Cards and other gimmicks used by companies has given people the idea that they are entitled some reward for patronizing a company. Give me a product I enjoy and I will come back again and again. Maybe some of the perks that RCCL gives out is the reason they posted a $25M fourth quarter loss and Carnival had a $294M profit during the same time period???.As a Carnival shareholder and cruiser, I will take that business model and cruise experience every single day of the week. Companies have sales and incentives only because they are having problems selling their product without them.

mohavemommy Posted February 8, 2005 #48 Share Posted February 8, 2005 I will cruise based upon where I want to go and the value for that sailing. These "discounts" really play no role in my decision making.
