My Conquest Review- 8/1 - 8/8

After 5 cruises and reading many reviews, I decided to do a review of my own. I tend to be wordy, so I’ll try to include pictures if you’re the type that just likes to see pictures J

My family (myself, my DH and my DS11) just sailed the Conquest on 8/1 – 8/8. Like a lot of people, we wanted to start our vacation a day early, so we headed to Galveston on Saturday. We left the Dallas area (well about 30 mins north of Dallas) around noon Saturday and after stopping for lunch and a potty break, made it to our hotel around 5p. I would have loved to stay on Galveston Island, but I was trying to keep this brief stay cheap, so I ended up using Priceline and got the Residence Inn Clear Lake for $89. Not exactly what I wanted, but it was cheaper than anything I could find in Galveston. We had dinner at a nearby restaurant and called it an early night.

After an OK breakfast at the hotel buffet, we left for Galveston around 10:30am. Of course I always forget something so we had to stop at Walmart for shampoo (I can’t use the Carnival shampoo. It dries out my hair). We arrived to the terminal around 11am. We always park at Lighthouse parking, but this time I thought it’d be easier to drop the bags of first then park the car. Boy was I wrong. We unloaded the bags while I waited for a porter. In the past, we’ve done this without a problem, but at the time I didn’t realize that I was too close to the end near the shuttles. If we had just dropped the bags closer to the front of the line I wouldn’t have had a problem. So I left my DH with the bags and my DS and I dropped the car off at Lighthouse. It was very quick (the shuttle was actually waiting on me) and we were back with DH in a few minutes. Now that I figured out where to drop the bags off, we were ready to board. The line went quickly and we were on board by 11:40 or so.

We explored the ship and had lunch on the Lido. My DS had his first of many slices of pizza. I have to add something about the pizza…while my DH and DS love it I found the cheese tastes weird. It was the same on the Ecstasy, so maybe all Carnival pizza uses the same cheese. I thought it was nasty so no pizza for me (not like there wasn’t plenty of other food to eat). We hung out by the casino until about 2p when we went to our room… #2352 oceanview on Main mid-ship. (I joked that we were hanging out with Jack from Titantic, but hey, whatever you can do to afford to cruise works for me).

Muster drill was hot. Note to self, if muster station is outside, wait until the last minute to line up. We were the second row from the back and there was no air flow. The only good thing about it is you don’t have to bring your life vest anymore.

This may be a good time to mention that my DH doesn’t do well in the heat. Yes, we live in Texas, but on average, we don’t spend that much time outside when it’s 100 degrees (unless you count walking to and from the car). Most of our activities this cruise involved AC or some type of shade. So we opted to stay in our room for sailaway while my DH played bartender pouring Cokes we brought on board.

Great review so far! You know you're from Texas when you call everything a "Coke." LOL.

So true, so true. (but with me, it really IS Coke)

My SO also does not handle the heat well. If he doesn't feel some breeze on his face, he thinks he's going to spontaneously combust. Living in Texas is not for sissies!

We want to book the Conquest before it moves to N.O., so tell us more, please.

LOL I was wondering if anyone would catch that. Pepsi's were on sale, so that's what I bought, but it's all still Coke. :D

Day 1 continued….

At 5pm we go to sign up my DS for Camp Carnival. On Grand Cayman night they have a late night party until 3:30am for $26. The spots fill up fast, so we signed up my son at this time.

Next it’s time for dinner. We chose Your Time Dining because we don’t always want to eat at the same time each night. I don’t remember what we had each night, but this night I had the New York Strip Steak with mac n cheese, DH had the Sweet and Sour Shrimp and DS had pizza. I will say that my DS branched out and order a started from the regular menu, but most nights opted for the main course from the kids menu. I love that he has the option to choose. All of us loved our food. It wasn’t anything spectacular, but it was really good. Our wait staff, Ketut, Putu and John were awesome. If only we could have had them every night.

Here's dinner...

At 8:30p we headed to the disco for Camp Carnival’s Family Welcome Aboard Party. They played musical games like passing the balloon and when the music stops, the person with the balloon had to go in the middle of the floor and sit on it to pop it. Lucky me, with heels and all, had to go and try to pop the balloon. Of course, my big butt wouldn’t pop it right away, so I had to bounce on it a little. That was kind of embarrassing, but the things we do for our kids J

Here's a blurry picture of the kids dancing with Freddy.. It was parents against the kids, but I think the kids won. Us parents were a mess..LOL

Since it’s the first night, we went to the Welcome Aboard show, but only because my DH wanted to. Hmmm.. I guess it might have something to do with the outfits the women wear. I’m not impressed by any of the Carnival shows. I LOVE musicals, but this just isn’t the same. I guess it’s more like a Las Vegas show. So, if you like that kind of thing, but all means, go to the shows.

By this time, I was ready for bed. My DH was happy to see that his mini corded fan was not confiscated, so he could sleep peacefully. The water was very smooth so I felt pretty much no rocking all night (and it was pretty much like this the whole time. Just the right amount to rock you to sleep).

Tomorrow’s a full day at sea...

Great review, sounds like you had a great time. We are on in less than 3 weeks. I had 2 questions. Did the AC stay on if you left balcony door open or do I need magnets. And what type of fan did you get on that was small enough for luggage, I also need one to make noise so I can sleep

We only had an oceanview, so I can't answer the question about the balcony. The fan was about 3x3, so not very big. My DH did wish he brought an extention cord (assuming it would be allowed) because the plug is on the other side of the room. It was still enough noise that he slept without a problem though.

We were on this cruise too along with Dac61 who has a review on CC. We had an aft wrap and I often left the balcony door open if I was outside baking, I mean tanning, and wanted some relief. The AC always stayed on. This was one HOT cruise...in alot of ways:D

I literally "lol" when it said Coke and the picture clearly shows Pepsi. Silly Texans :p

LOL, I still say "Coke" for everything. We don't drink Coke, diet or otherwise and as a diehard Diet Dr. Pepper fan I still said to my husband on our cruise "Don't forget our Cokes!"

In Texas, any good waitress knows if you ask for a Coke, she'll ask you which kind. :D
