Smoking Policy

Does Princess have a smoking policy? We will be on the Ruby April 24, 2011 with our two sons and their significant others. One smokes and will want to follow the rules. Is smoking permitted in the cabins? They have an inside. How about on balconies, public areas?

I have noticed Princess has become much more restrictive regarding smoking over the last year, but still allows it. You may smoke in your cabin, on your balcony, and in very limited designated public areas. As of our last cruise (June of this year) the only piblic areas were a portion of the Casino, (although there are a number of non smoking nights) and limited tables, about 6, on Horizon deck port side, outside.

As recently as 2 years ago most lounges (Wheelhouse, Explorers) had small smoking areas-these are now gone. In addition smoking used to be allowed anywhere on the outside decks around the pool on the port side- no more. Looks like Princess is slowly phasing out smoking.

Although the smoking areas on Princess have noticeably declined in the last few years there are still areas where you can smoke including you cabin, balcony & near the main pool and Terrace pool also. It's been pretty much eliminated inside the ship except for the casino & cigar lounge.

From the website (although the previous posters have already given you a good idea):

"Smoking is not allowed in the dining rooms, any food service area, or in the show lounges and theaters. Smoking is permitted in staterooms, stateroom balconies, and designated areas. As a courtesy to your fellow passengers, please refrain from smoking pipes and cigars in all public rooms."

We were on the Diamond Princess earlier this year and as an ex smoker I thought they had a fair and reasonable policy. There were a few non smokers complaining that they could not go into the cigar lounge, Churchill's? because it was so smoky, and I found those doing their imitation of a wind farm when passing the smokers corner on the Prom deck, hilarious. Given the situation now for non smokers compared with 1966 when we started cruising it is a dramatic improvement.

Smoking is also allowed outside on the port side of the Promenade Deck.

And while smoking is allowed in cabins, Princess discourages the practice. Princess also asks that smokers be considerate of their neighbors when smoking on balconies.

As the OP, I forgot how sensitive some of these subjects are. Sorry! I did look on the Princess website but didn't find the answer.

With any luck, our son will be a former smoker by April 2011--this is another good reason to quit. He won't smoke in his cabin since his GF doesn't. It sounds like the cigar lounge is the best bet if he must smoke.

So we can all consider this thread closed now--I got the answers that I was looking for. Thanks for all the comments.

It's been 6 years since our last cruise and this next one is more than 6 months away but I'm already re-addicted to CC!

That's a policy I don't understand. Wouldn't it be safer to smoke on outside decks instead of an enclosed stateroom? Plus the added time/effort it takes the room attendant to deal with the leftover cigarette smoke.

What is fun for non-smokers is when activities such as trivia are scheduled for the cigar lounge.

Yes, it has happened.
