P&o australia are dead, long live rci

Never sailed P&O but one thing about cruising that appeals to me is ... cruising! Not bobbing around the south pacific because the cruiseline doesn't know to start the engines.

Seriously, from all I heard about P&O Australia I'm not going to risk sailing with them. These are the ships Carnival rejects and we all know how low Carnival set's it standards.

Having sailed on the Solistice class before, and with two more cruises on the way, my take is that the ships are stylish, the public spaces are either cosy, intimate and personal or stylish and sophisticated (even the undercover pool feels refined, the food is outstanding, and the wine list unsurpassed.

I've cruised on both Celebrity and P & O and have to say they are very different but I did take them both for what they are and enjoyed 'cruising' with both cruiselines.

You must remember that Celebrity has had their fair share of problems too, particularly with the 'Pods' on the Millennium class ships. If my memory serves me correctly off the south of France passengers were stranded on the ship due to this problem and they were bobbing around and ended up hitting rocks.....

Hi itsandreas, I don't think you know a great deal about P&O Australia, only one of their four ships, Pacific Sun (ex Jubilee) was an ex Carnival ship the remaining three are all Sitmar ordered and designed ex Princess ships.

Hi Sean, Oops,:o I didn't think about her as itsandreas said ' Seriously from what I have heard about P&O Australia I am not going to risk sailing with them. These are the ships Carnival rejects......'.

I thought he/she was referring to the current P&O fleet.

Its really is what each person thinks about the look of cruise ships. It's only my few, but because they want to get more people on board per cruise, the ships today are starting to look more like large square boxes with the odd bend in the middle. I know they are very nice inside and on the upper deck, but to look at from shore, they have seemed to have lost their wonderful slender shapes of old.

It is a good thing that more companies are going to be operating cruises out of Australia and New Zealand as that will lower prices.

I totally agree with you Rolls:).

Hi Jenny,

I also thought he was referring to the current P & O fleet because no-one can now cruise on the ships from years past.

We have cruised with P & O many many times and have never 'bobbed around the South Pacific .... '. In fact, we haven't experienced major problems on any of our cruises, except for big seas a couple of times.

We don't just settle for P & O because that is all we can afford or because we don't know any better. :D We have sailed with other cruise lines including HAL, Princess and Carnival.

I would not comment about a cruiseline I have not cruised with, and I am hesitant to say too much about Carnival, having only been on a 7 night cruise. Our experience with HAL and Princess is much more extensive. We considered these ships to be superb - and they are also owned by Carnival.

If someone is not happy with their experience with a cruiseline then they fully entitled to say so, but I am constantly surprised at the number of people who have never sailed with P & O and yet they criticize them. Maybe if these people cruised with P & O (with an open mind) they might be surprised at how much they enjoy it.

To somebody who has never sailed P&O before - but has a lot to say about them.

I have never sailed with Celebrity before - but I do know how to spell "Solstice"

Barry

Doesn't everyone make spelling mistakes?

We must either change the name of this forum or start another one, this is a typical example of people getting het up because of a negative comment about P&O.

Making coments about spelling mishtakes is wong

Totally agree, Aus Traveller. I, also, would not comment about any line or ship I haven't cruised with!

I've now cruised on the Pacific Dawn three times and each cruise has been fabulous. There were a couple of hiccups which I don't consider worthy of complaint. We were not held up anywhere, had no troubles with air conditioning, toilets or hot water, the Reception Desk staff were actually very pleasant, our cabin and wait staff were marvellous, the steak in the Palm Court would melt in your mouth and most importantly, we met some lovely people. And that, in my honest opinion is what makes a cruise!

Sludger, at least someone on this site has a sense of humour, I'm afraid this forum is turning me off cruising - when husband's retirement comes along 4x4 and caravan coming our way! (In the meantime still looking forward to Radiance and Sun Princess).

Funny Sludger, you made me laugh.:)

Just one thing I have thought of. A name change to the Forum will make it clear to new people that discussion encompasses all cruise lines, (that's what I thought you wanted at first).

However, if you split the forum you will still get all the same old regulars with the same preconceived ideas and baggage commenting on both sections, except it will now occur on two boards instead of one. What is your opinion on that?

Thanks David. New Zealand was as beautiful as ever and the people so welcoming. We have been so lucky with our cruises so far. Must be some good karma coming to us. :D

Your spelling is almost as good as Thied's.

Spelling can be a problem for a lot of us, me in particular, but under the board guidelines, we are asked not to comment on others spelling abilities.

Just this week I finally got around to installing the spell check that you can use when posting replies , and its really neat.

You have to download a small programme ,but once done , its great.

Now I just press the ABC button , and then have to go through and correct or ignore what it says.:D

Couldn't agree more, I see that you're from WA too, we have to fly most of the time anyway to get to board the ship, the cons of the extra cost and the longer flight are far outweighed by the quality of the cruises that are available overseas.

Haven't done a cruise all around the Med but it's on the list.

IF these new (down here) cruise lines (Carnival, Celebrity) employ the same pricing that they do overseas (It's a big IF), people will then realise that they are paying a Rolls Royce price for a Mini Minor when they cruise with P&O Aust.

P&O Aust will have to raise their game.

Good news about the relaxing of the on board casino law, isn't it? Maybe we will get a ships less than 20 years old based here now.

Paul

Paul you are dead right. I would dearly love to do a circumnavigation of Australia, it is on my bucket list, but i will not be doing it with the cruise lines that are currently working out and around Australia. (ie P&O and that other little ship that we have access to - Athena) It is just not an option to me. So still trolling the internet sites and waiting for the ship of my dreams to board.

Now they have relaxed the onboard Casino thing for WA is great, but the bastards have banned the 3 night cruise to nowhere from that......nanny state still calling the shots

Nanny state indeed!

Well at least we can go shopping after 5 pm now AND Joondalup is now open on Sundays!!!!

The old Lord's day observance society members in the government must be worried we will all be cast out!

What next, poker machines in RSL clubs!

The government should concentrate on important things like building the pipeline from Lake Argyle.

We might not have any water to drink but at least it's sunny everyday here.

Paul

Sorry I've just realised this post is not about cruising sorry!

Haha, I have been here for 3 and a bit years now, sure was a shock to me when there was no "sunday shopping, no weeknight shopping, no pokies in the pubs/clubs" but one does adapt.......what I really don't like is the fact that WA is still a backwater with cruising. I refuse to go on that little ship, and most cruises that are offered are to Bali/Broome/Circumnavigation of Aus/or long cruises in excess of 14 days, mind you some of those are really goodl, but i just can't take that long off work, wouldl be really good if they could get the mix right - destination plus duration

Where else can cruises go from Fremantle in less than 14 days except Bali or Broome. :)There aren't any lovely Indian Ocean islands similar to those in the Pacific within easy cruising distance.
