Balcony Smoking

I agree except for the casino. Carnival is slow to get on board that train. ON NCL ships you may only smoke in the casino and the cigar bar or on deck

Good to know since i'll be cruising on NCL soon ;)

I figured though that the casino's allow smoking but the problem is that the non smoking areas aren't much better since the rooms arent very big and i still inhale the smoke and eventually have to leave. It is better to have non smoking areas than to be at table in a casino and someones smoke blowing right in your face. My mouth tasted like an ashtray once after a smoker was rude and had his cigarette prcatically resting on my shoulder.

I do find if you ask nicely most smokers will be considerate and either move or put their cigarette out.

If I am in the casino at a smoking table and no one is smoking I will usually ask if anyone minds. If someone does and is nice about it I won't light up. On NCL if I do that the dealer will "save my spot" at the table when I step away to have a cigarette. Hope Carnival will do the same.

See thats so good that you are a considerate smoker and ask :)

You really shouldn't have to ask if you are sitting at a smoking table but you still do. As a non smoker I would never say anything or even frown at a smoker sitting at a smoking table unless the smoke was really in my face and bothering me but i also have the option of moving. The ones that annoy me really are the one i call "hoppers" in casinos lol. They hop from table to table and hold thier cigarette in their hand and lean all over you with the hand holding the cigarette. You don't see too much of this on cruise ship casinos though.

A lot of us try to be. Hoppers would annoy me too.

I was recently on RC's Independance of the Seas, and their casino was non-smoking. A first for me ever!! We are former real smokers, current vacation smokers- lol, some of you will understand that. So at first I was disappointed about the casino. I soon discovered though, it made the place a little more pleasant imo,and a lot emptier than normal cruise casinos- and by the end of the cruise we were up enough it covered our all of (substantial) cruise expenses! So non-smoking casino was a lucky charm for us.

They had a cigar bar, a nightclub, and one side of the outside public deck space that allowed smoking. The funny thing is it is out of England where EVERYONE seems to smoke, I think there were far more smokers on that ship than any Carnival ship we'd taken in the Caribean- but as a whole, the ship was very smoke free.

Princess has non smoking nights in their casino which is nice.

For those REALLY interested and those who get OFFENDED, may I suggest that before tickets are purchased travelers might wish to read the following types of information:

http://www.frommers.com/articles/5872.html

There ARE options other than Carnival if it's important !

that site says you can smoke in all dining areas on Carnival. last i remember, the MDR was non smoking

Let me respond as a dreaded "smoker". You know when we cruise we are always very aware of where the smoking areas of the ship are and adhere to the Line's policy on smoking. Yes we always sail in a balcony cabin and yes we always smoke on the balcony but never in the cabin.

I really take exception to those who have an issue with smokers, outside, 30k+ wind moving across the deck, smoking in allowed areas. You know the ones......the glare, the rolling eyes. Wow...this is a wonderful country we live in. Same thing in the casino which is down to about 3 smoking tables for 4500 guests in the case of the Dream. I cannot tell you how many times on our last cruise that a non-smoker would sit down at a smoking table and then proceed to ask everyone "Do you really mind?" I always graciously pointed out the other 66 non smoking tables available.

Just sayin.....You know I have a real issue with those folks who insist on entering an elevator prior to the guests on the elevator getting off. You know the "ones" I speak of.

Hopefully CCL will recognize the difficulties we are experiencing and make each ship a wide open smoking area and only for those who know elevator etiquette. ;)

I love your response. My husband is a smoker (I'm not) and he is pretty considerate when it comes to smoking. I on the other hand, know when he's on the balcony talking a puff, I let him enjoy. It works both ways. As for the elevator etiquette . . . those are my non-favorite people, the ENTITLEMENT CREW! :D

This is the reason that NCL is not getting any of my money I am spending on my four 7 day cruises this year....Their loss

I can understand you but I have a feeling that Carnival will soon be going the route of NCL and the rest. I have been told you can smoke in the cabins in NCL but I never have.

OMG how rude!!!!

What did you say to that?

I would have spoken to the bartender and made a complaint. You were in a non smoking area. I"ve gotten bolder as i get older so i would not have taken that lightly. I choose not to smoke and try to keep my body as healthy as possible and i refuse to let a smoker pollute my air in a non smoking area.

I asked the bartender to call Security. It got worse from there. Now when someone is smoking a non-smoking area I don't even try to be nice, I just call Security or the Purser's Desk from the nearest house phone.

If we were in port and not moving and my balcony mate asked me really nicely and politely then I would put mine out. If they were like the ones on my last cruise that sat there and complained at the top of their lungs about me smoking on my aft balcony then I smoke more

My thoughts exactly...

As long as the neighbor doesn't spend 24/7 on their balcony and expect me to never smoke.

I am always willing to find a time when I am around the cabin and the neighbor would usually be out.

A little sugar goes a long way.

seem like everytime we get a balcony it's ALWAY right next to a smoker. It's disgusting, Just got back from a 7 day and no matter what time of the day or night we would go out on the balcony, the cabin right next to us was smoking. It was almost comical, we joked about every time we went out there, we would hear the cabin door open and the click of a lighter. In fact I can't remember a single cruise we had with a balcony when one of our immediate neighbors wasn't constantly smoking. Its so nice to stroll out to watch the sunrise and hear morning hacking and the smell of smoke. How sad is it that someone would spend the extra bucks just so they could smoke all hours of the day and night. Put them all on one side of the ship and charge them extra....P.U.

You see how fresh it is on my mind that I would feel a need to talk about it...

More than likely that person was like me -- If you were rude in your "joking" about it when you went out there I would go out there and light up just to annoy you.

So sorry you find smoking disgusting but nobody asked you to book a balcony.

You can smoke on NCl in your cabin. On our last NCl Spirit trip, a chain smoker in the cabin next to ours filled our cabin with smoke coming through the walls and the connecting door. I finally bought some duct tape and taped the door and got a little relief.

Here's the official NCl smoking policy:

What about smoking, drinking and gambling on the ship?

We want you to be comfortable on board, so public areas throughout all NCL ships are smoke free. If you smoke cigarettes,
you can do so in your stateroom, on your balcony,
in the casino or Cigar Bar (where available). If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Also, you can smoke cigarettes, pipes and cigars outside on open decks (just not around food venues, sport decks, kids' pool areas and other designated non-smoking areas).

We're non-smokers who enjoy our balcony cabins. Honestly, smokers don't normally bother us. We did have a cruise where cigar and cigarette ashes were constantly pelting us while on the balcony (the wind must have been just right). We really didn't know what to do about it since it wasn't coming from the cabins next to us. It appeared to be coming from cabins forward and above. However, the smoke itself doesn't bother us. It's a free county, I guess. :)

I am excited we are getting a balcony cabin for the first time in May. We are both non smokers, I would not ask my balcony neighbor not to smoke, but I just hope we dont have neighbors that smoke, I know for people that smoke they dont even smell it. However, it is a real problem when it causes health problems for other people. It would be nice if they had non smoking balconys and smoking ones, but they dont so if our neighbors are smoking we will just not go out on the balcony when there out I guess. I know its hard for smokers to understand that the smell of the smoke can make someone with asthma or allergies sick. I have seen it many times . My state I live in bans smoking in all public places. There are just so many health issues for 2nd hand smoke, and I know alot of smokers dont believe it . However saying that , even if carnival made a rule about the balconys they could never inforce it. I hope we like the balcony, its our first one ever...

Oh get over yourself. I'm a cigar smoker and enjoy my balcony that i paid for as well. If you are considerate/Polite and maybe ask the person next to you they might be able to work something out with you, but if you are a rude $#@%! than they won't.

I would have no issues compromising with somebody who was polite about it, but not somebody who is rude.

On the other hand, some people are just @$$holes.

Princess has non smoking nights in their casino which is nice.

I was on Crown Princess a year ago and went into the casino during its "no smoking" night. The place was like a morgue. I'll bet there weren't more than 10 passengers in the entire casino. Once 9:00 pm rolled around and the casino became smoking again, it was packed within minutes.

When they first ban smoking in bars around here, everyone thought it would hurt business but it didnt, people are gonna drink and gamble.. They just go outside to smoke, come back in. If they had a choice they would go where they could smoke but they dont have a choice. The bar and grill places have seen increased sales because now more families go there with there kids to eat .

No one was RUDE to anyone, We JOKED to ourselves in the cabin. An ocassional smoke doesn't me, but every few minutes from 6:30 in the morning is a bit of a problem. We hated to be chased back into the cabin every time we sat on the balcony. At least it seemed that way. Just sharing an observation and responding to the OP. No need to use *&$#%!

I'm not asking this to be snarky because I honestly don't know of the actual effects of 2nd hand smoke that you get briefly while out on a balcony. How many health issues can I as a non-smoker get while sitting on my balcony if my neighbor smokes when I'm only out there a fraction of the time and getting only a whiff of smoke? I can understand the effects if I'm being subjected to it for long periods of time. Just asking and not asking to be flamed.
