Balcony Smoking

Just curious - from what I've read, the wind is quite high while at sea on port and starboard balconies, so how is it that the smoke smell is so bad? I would think that if it's windy, that this wouldn't be a problem.

I'm asking because on my next cruise I will be in a port-side cabin, and I smoke (only on the balcony, never in the cabin).

My last two cruises were in an aft-wrap cabin, so I'd make sure to go around to another side if someone was out on their balcony.

If you can figure out how they can complain with the wind and the ship at 20 or so knots and still have any smell of any kind I would like to hear it...

There are rude people on either side of the argument :) But it is annoying when smokers follow the rules and still get the "evil eye" from some folks. I'm a big believer in rules, otherwise there would be anarchy! A little give and take on either side would go a long way:)

I agree 100% :)

Some people are more sensitive then others.......we had a chain smoker next to us on the balcony on one of our cruises....and while it didn't bother me so much it did bother my ddil. We had a chain smoker in our cabin next to us on the Elation and I did have to complain because it was coming thru the walls of the cabin........the steward to care of it just fine....but he had to spray more then once.

For me and im sure other non smokers its not about the smell of smoke but the smoke itself. The smell doesnt bother me but inhaling it does. Although its windy if you are in a balcony cabin behind a smoker the smoke will blow onto your balcony. Someone posted on here how she booked a forward balcony cabin and that helped a bit.

HAHA :p

2. We are spewing nothing more than the ship does out the smoke stack that you just dont happen to be in front of... or the buses or cars that drive by you everyday while you wait outside waiting for a bus to get to work...

Cigarette or cigar smoke isnt the same as exhaust from cars or buses at least for me its not. Sure we are inhaling that exhaust but i have lived in NYC all my life (where there is tons of pollution) and have never had an asthma attack from bus exhaust. Now cigarette smoke on the other hand immediately makes me wheeze and i have to run to take my inhaler so there is a difference.

I am excited we are getting a balcony cabin for the first time in May. We are both non smokers, I would not ask my balcony neighbor not to smoke, but I just hope we dont have neighbors that smoke, I know for people that smoke they dont even smell it. Not true, at least not in my case. However, it is a real problem when it causes health problems for other people. It would be nice if they had non smoking balconys and smoking ones, but they dont so if our neighbors are smoking we will just not go out on the balcony when there out I guess. They may be really nice people though. Why deprive yourself getting to make new friends? I know its hard for smokers to understand that the smell of the smoke can make someone with asthma or allergies sick. Unfortunately too many people take this to an extreme on public message boards like this one. I have seen it many times . My state I live in bans smoking in all public places. There are just so many health issues for 2nd hand smoke, and I know alot of smokers dont believe it . This may be true for some. However saying that , even if carnival made a rule about the balconys they could never inforce it. I hope we like the balcony, its our first one ever...

I'm sure you'll love your balcony and....

Even though you seem to have made a lot of assumptions about smokers (see above), your entire post has come across to me with the feeling that you understand what is allowed and where, and you have chosen to go on this cruise knowing the rules. I sincerely hope that if your balcony neighbors do smoke, they are as considerate of your feelings.

May you have peaceful, safe and happy sailings!

You haven't heard, you can't smoke in the parking lot at the mall or in your car parked at the mall (seriously big mall in Syracuse). You must be a minimum of 20 feet outside from any public building, no smoking in any public park. All of these locations if caught you will be ticketed and fined. At some beaches in California, there is no smoking on the beach!

Anyways, I joke that we are now criminals.

I was recently on RC's Independance of the Seas, and their casino was non-smoking. A first for me ever!! We are former real smokers, current vacation smokers- lol, some of you will understand that. So at first I was disappointed about the casino. I soon discovered though, it made the place a little more pleasant imo,and a lot emptier than normal cruise casinos- and by the end of the cruise we were up enough it covered our all of (substantial) cruise expenses! So non-smoking casino was a lucky charm for us.

They had a cigar bar, a nightclub, and one side of the outside public deck space that allowed smoking. The funny thing is it is out of England where EVERYONE seems to smoke, I think there were far more smokers on that ship than any Carnival ship we'd taken in the Caribean- but as a whole, the ship was very smoke free.

That would make spending a little more to cruise RCI. Thanks for tip.

Princess has non smoking nights in their casino which is nice.

I like this.

This is the reason that NCL is not getting any of my money I am spending on my four 7 day cruises this year....Their loss

I was on the Sun last month. I'm a non-smoker and found the Casino intolerable. The machines were very tight and the smoke ridiculous. A passenger had it right. "I just come to the casino to smoke." I will yield the casinos to the smokers and save some money. One nice thing on the Pearl was that they had couple slots in a non-smoking lounge.

I am very thankful that my first cruise was on the Paradise when it was smoke free. The entire ship. They announced regularly that anyone caught with smokes would be put off at the next port.

You would be surprised...If it was really ruining your balcony experience and you were really sweet and polite about it then most smokers would be ok with you asking. Now if you were on starboard ship public deck probably not so much but private cabin balcony I would be ok if you asked -- As long as we weren't cruising at 20 knots which would kinda make the request ridiculous -- Know what I mean?

I would be OK with you politely asking but I would politely tell you that the rules say I can smoke and that is one of the perks I pay for. If it is legal for me to smoke on my balconey then I will....

Most smokers are going to tell you the same thing....

1. If the smoker is a chain-smoker, then good luck on waiting until he or she is finished.

2. Because it's the smokers who are spewing carcinogenic smoke into the air for the non-smokers to breathe.

There. Answered your question.

LOL...You don't seem to mind being on a ship that is spewing carcinogenic smoke into the air for the non-smokers to breathe.

Not the ones I know or myself. But I guess I am just more considerate because I live with a non-smoker. And now that I have all the info on the E-Cigarette I hope to be by next week.

The reason behind no smoking on the beach is because of all the cig butts along the shoreline.......not because of the smoke;)

I agree here.......and mybe it does have to do with living with a non smoker......my dh smokes and I don't and he is very considerate......

In fact everyone I know in my life that does smoke is and they are in the minority in our group. They understand it is a "real" bother.....

In Ontario, you can't smoke in your own car if there's someone in it under 16! Even if the 16 year old is smoking

If a parent permits a 16 year old smoke ........that is a whole other thread:rolleyes:
