No that's good mate, I think half the posters on here get the wrong end of the stick sometimes and think I am knocking their lifestyle, I'm not, I just like to let the cruise lines know that we know what they are up to.

OK ... I suppose next , you will be telling us they are going to install hammocks on the decks ,

to squeeze more people in....:D

Like the passenger who arrived on board

and found there was no cabin for her.

As the staff tried to sort it out they asked ,

"Would you like an inside or outside cabin?'

She replied...

"It looks like rain

so I would prefer an Inside Cabin Thank You".

Hmmm don't laugh - when we sailed on the Rhapsody they asked us when the 5th person in our cabin was arriving (there was 4 of us for our 4 berth cabin) we explained that whilst we were good sharers we weren't that good  :o after a good half hour we were finally allowed to "keep" our cabin - so I have no idea what happened to the other person!!!! I am not joking - we weren't impressed and I'm sure she wouldn't have been either!

And most of their cabins are smaller than P&O's, I believe. That's sure packing them in!

Rhapsody does have family cabins for 5, so I'd guess it was one of those.

As for the extra 8 people, as I said previously it's a tiny proportion in respect of the overall ship. And given it was only one deck checked, for all we know they're adding on some extra facilities on another deck (as they've said they'll be renovating before she comes here) causing the loss of two or three cabins, so this is just shuffling 8 bods from that deck to another.

Storm in a teacup. Better things to do on a cruise than worry about 8 other people on a ship this size!

Ho Hum, I'll repeat, It's not just eight cabins The eight cabins were just those in a part of the main deck.

Anyone with any doubt about this should go to the Aussie site and pull up the deck plans then go to the US site and do the same.

As you roll your mouse pointer over the cabins it tells you what the capacity of the cabins are. On many cabins these capacities are increased on the Aussie deck plans. I have only checked the main deck I do not have to check further I know this happens.

Do not let the fact that you dislike either me or the way I post comments on here cloud your opinion of what is a factual statement.

I don't think anyone really cares. We all choose what we want for various reasons. Some of us are just happy to cruise. I've never found the Pacific Dawn to be particularly crowded even though some cabins were converted to 4-berth rooms.

Hi,

You are missing the point very slightly here.

I know that the sprit is designed to carry more people than the 2124 advertised on the US site. Interestingly enough nowhere on the US site does it mention a capacity greater 2124 for the Spirit or it's sister ships in the same class.

The extra capacity is used at peak times and most of the 3 person cabins would never be full, now with Carnival replacing the single sofas on this ship to accomodate 4 they will actively promote these rooms for 4 people.

I can understand why you would think that nobody cares about this as I notice from the list of cruises you have been on these have all been taken at off peak times. It is understandable you would not have noticed any overcrowding.

I would suggest that anyone who doesn't understand where I am coming from should do as I have done. ie

Cruise on the Pacific Sun with over 2000 pax on board and over 500 kids and lots groups of teenagers packed into 4 berth cabins.

Cruise on the Jewel with over 600 kids on board.

The Pacific Dawn mini suits are only 3 berth and I do not why they dont make them 4 berth.

Wow....500 or 600 kids onboard. Thats a lot, and as much as I adore kids, my mind boggles at this amount. The crew must have had their work cut out for them on these cruises. This is why we try to cruise out of school holiday times.

As for your main topic....I think I may be the only one that can see your point, however I neither agree or disagree with it, but it is a shame that the ratio is taking over just for the sake of making a 'buck'. A sign of the times, hey, and we just have to live with it, or get richer and be able to afford sailing on one of those specialised mega-buck cruises.

there was 423 children on our last cruise and the cruise after ours had 580 chlidren on it ( Pacific Dawn )... and our cruise was not in Qld school holidays.

45 children cruise 20/02/2010.

165 children 12 june 2010.

269 children 05/03/2011.

Again, wow, thats a lot of kids. Just goes to prove that cruising is a very affordable holiday. Twenty years ago, we couldn't afford to take the whole family. Its good for young families I guess.

Sorry to veer off topic.

Thats very true, cruiseing has become affordable for families over the years, so cruise lines are tring to put as many passengers as they can on there cruise ship. hance why they are changing so many cruise ship cabins from two berth to four berth, I would say if they could have five and six berth they would being that as well.

Again, someone is missing the point that it's normal for occupancy to be more than just the twin or normal standard. Obviously, despite being told this, they keep repeating the same untruths claiming that the extra capacity is only used in peak periods, when there's no such restriction.

Cruise lines will fill every single sailing as well as they can, and would love it if every cruise was at peak capacity; there are some caveats on that regarding onboard spending and maintaining customer expectations of pricing, but if they were met, the maximum occupancy itself isn't an issue.

Jen,

I am glad that someone is getting my drift.

If you cruise in off-peak times you are never likely to experience the problems that eventuate when they overcrowd these ships.

I have nothing against kids, I have 14 & 11 year olds.

I have nothing against groups of young people either.

But when you have as many as P&O cram onto the ships in peak periods it becomes a major problem for everyone on board.

The buffet at these times is like a zoo and you have to pull someone out of the pool before you can get in.

It's hardly your typical laid back cruising experience.

Again they may be able to cram 2600 on the Spirit but it was never really designed for that many pax to fit comfortably, hence the fact that it is NEVER mentioned on the U.S. site as being anything other than able to carry 2124.

It is for that reason that I will never cruise again in peak times with P&O Aust and it looks like Carnival now.

A much better way to go is with other lines that just visit our seas and do not base themselves here after an "Aussiefication" refit (code for: add as many berths as we can get away with and charge more).

And for all of our BIG Mates, if you take the time to read all the posts instead of just thinking what pearls of wisdom you are going to TELL people in your next enthralling post you would be saving your energy.

I have already stated and I shall repeat it for those of you who have not read it that on the US deck plans for the Spirit there is an existing total of 175 4 berth cabins already without all the extra ones.

Paul

There's certainly a lot of repetition coming from one poster.

If there were only 175 4 berths before, that's only a maxmium of 700 people out of the 2600 person capacity, so barely a quarter of rooms. Assuming these are actually additional rooms and not moves, it's no wonder they wanted to increase that, to make it more accessible to families.

Well I'm glad that's sorted then, we all agree that P&O and Carnival have a policy of increasing the capacity whenever they can get away with it for us Aussies.

All we need now is agreement on the issue of us Aussies paying more for their cruises than the going rate overseas and we can close this thread and concentrate on improving our U.S. English vocabulary and brush up on our Knowledge of the American civil war.

Loving it really,

Paul

Yes, they will definitely need those cabins rearranged to accommodate the kids - well that 'you beaut' slide is going to attract them, isn't it?

To quote a travel writer:

Amongst the many new features will be a thrill slide and a splash park. It will have the steepest water slide at sea, with a vertical drop, plus there will be a giant soaking water bucket in the splash park – perfect for the young ones.

I saw a first today, that rather threw me.

The Sunday Times here in NZ came out with an excellent Cruise Supplement in the Travel Section.

It was Wall to Wall cruising.

Usually its just Local cruises, but today, due to the strong dollar I suppose, they featured lots of overseas cruises.

The options are amazing and excellent value.

One that struck my eye , was Disney Cruises.

They have always been know as a more expensive cruise line, but guess what they were advertising for our local market.

All the prices were quoted as ...

Share Quad from....

Never seen that before.

Guess they reckon thats what our local market goes for ,

so lets cash in.;)
