Thanks for posting. It is difficult for anyone to "fall off" a cruise ship. Sadly, it's almost always a suicide or result of alcohol-fueled tomfoolery. BonnieVA Posted May 21, 2011 #6 Share Posted May 21, 2011 These stories - especially when it's crew - break my heart. I have a very good friend working on an X ship & I stay in touch with other crew I have met on my cruises. The fact that there is no mental health professional on these ships scares the heck out of me. I have knowledge of at least 3 of these crew having down times ... sometimes very down ... & they have no one to talk to. In fact, one person is currently in the area where this other crew jumped & as I read the news story I was terrified it might have been the crew I am in touch with. Seems like there should be someone onboard to see to their emotional needs just as there is a doctor for physical needs. I have told my closest friend to call me whenever he feels he needs to talk to someone ... no matter the time or day where I am.
hat776 Posted May 21, 2011 #7 Share Posted May 21, 2011 Costa have a Chaplain on board who also helps any crew member who is troubled. Most of the Philipine crew are Catholic and whenever I passed by the chapel I almost always saw two or three of them there.ure I don't know if it done regularly but one of the crew told me that many of them never venture into the public areas at all. The Chaplain organised a variety show with most of the artistes on board taking part purposely for the crew.
cruiseacecat Posted May 21, 2011 #8 Share Posted May 21, 2011 This just makes me so sad. So very young. I thought there were Human Resources people on board each ship who can provide help and advice to crew and staff in need. Am I mistaken? If there is no one, this needs to change. Surely there must be some provision for counseling. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Anne

People are separated from their families for long periods of time; the hours are long; the accommodations are cramped; some passengers ( and crew also) can be difficult and demanding. I also keep in touch with former staff. I too wish there was someone on board to help them deal with their issues and problems. I hate to see all of these suicide stories; there has to be a remedy....
