calex1976 Posted October 5, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 5, 2011 I know every one asks about hotels, but we are looking for something a little different than most. We will be driving in, so does not have to be very near airport. We live on a island, so no need to be near the beach. We can swim year round and go to the gym at my mom's condo, so no need for a pool or a gym. All we are looking for is a decent place to sleep without worrying about high crime rate and near restaurants. Most local hotels seem to be more like resorts. This will only be a stopping for a rest for us, not thinking of it as part of the vacation. We would prefer somewhere in the $80 to $100 range, if possible. We thought we found a nice on near the interstate, then I found out there had been a stabbing in the lobby the week before(decided on not staying there). Any info or reviews would be great, Thanks. Austykatie Posted October 7, 2011 #3 Share Posted October 7, 2011 When we were there in Jan this is where we stayed. I think I spent $120.00 a night. It was near the port and right down the road for the Hollywood Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. It was a nice room and had a great breakfast the next morning. We are going again in Jan and we will either stay there again or at The Hard Rock. Hope that helps. I think a few hotels must write their own reviews. We have been to the Hard Rock in Biloxi MS many times and have always enjoyed it, very nice rooms. Remember to stop by the players club and get a members card. Even if you do not gamble you will be put on their mailing list and possibly get free or reduced room rates. We have received quite a few comps and we only spend a little on the slots. Thanks again
Railwaylass Posted October 12, 2011 #5 Share Posted October 12, 2011 We are cruising in March so haven't stayed here yet, but we are booking the Days Inn about 8 miles from Port Everglades. They have a Cruise Package which includes free parking during your cruise and a free shuttle to the port for $69.00 for up to four in a room with two double beds per night. http://www.travelodge.com/hotels/florida/ft-lauderdale/days-inn-fort-lauderdale-oakland-park-airport-north/rooms-rates?partner_id=&hotel_id=06526&campaign_code=&propId=DI06526&checkout_date=03%2F05%2F2012&brand_id=DI&children=0&corporate_id=&teens=0&affiliate_id=&iata=&rate_code=&adults=2&checkin_date=03%2F03%2F2012&rooms=1# Sorry the link doesn't go straight to their main page! I had a computer issue and couldn't get back to there so this is my booking page I think - you will have to change the dates to check availability for yourself...sigh! We booked the same hotel just a few days ago. We will be staying there in late January. It looked like the best one for a decent price. The free parking, good breakfast, and free shuttle sold me on the hotel. I will write a review of it when we get back, hopefully it will be a good one..lol. Cruise life Posted October 14, 2011 #7 Share Posted October 14, 2011 I called and spoke to a "JJ". He said they have not had issues with the parking and there are always lots of cruise passengers. Seemed like a nice reservation agent, spoke well and friendly. For the money, don't think there will be a better deal- two beds, parking, shuttle, breakfast for three, $87. We are splurging on the ship! I'm sure breakfast will be wonderful before our buffet lunch on board hours later. edited to add parking alone at the port would have cost more than the package price here (a 27% discount from their regular rates). They are Wyndham related for points purposes, as well.
Cruise life Posted October 14, 2011 #8 Share Posted October 14, 2011 Did anyone read reviews first? I just went to both Trip Advisor and Expedia. I might tolerate a 50% rating, but less than that is pushing it. These reviews were shockingly bad. Just a warning...I guess you are paying for the parking and the shuttle, not the hotel/breakfast.
Railwaylass Posted October 14, 2011 #9 Share Posted October 14, 2011 Just went over to Trip Advisor and had a look - definitely not the best reviews overall! But I searched for a while for a place that was inexpensive and near the Tri-Rail (we have to fly into Miami for our Port Everglades cruise) and that provides a shuttle to the port and this one fits those requirements so we will still go with them I think. Unless I can find something more satisfactory between now and then...I certainly will keep looking. We are spending so much on airfare from the UK, balcony cabin, drinks packages and loads of wonderful shore excursions that I have to economise somewhere, lol! Those gorgeous beachfront resort-style hotels look great but $200+ a night is too rich for our blood I am afraid! At least (as you can see from my log-on) I won't mind hearing the trains!:D
PrettyHazardous Posted October 14, 2011 #10 Share Posted October 14, 2011 We stayed at the La Quinta Inn in FLL in 2009 and loved it. Most of my cc roll callers were there and we had about 15 rooms (it was for my wedding cruise). It's close to an outlet shopping mall with lots of restaurants that you can walk to but since you have a car driving is optimal. Also they have the best Marshalls we have ever seen in that outlet:rolleyes:. Hotel was inexpensive and you can leave your car and have free shuttle to port. It has a pool that's nice but it's not a resort. Also a good free breakfast for continental (do it yourself waffles). Staff was nice too. I would def stay there again. calex1976 Posted October 15, 2011 Author #11 Share Posted October 15, 2011 It's funny how some sites have great reviews then others have bad ones on the same hotel. I wonder if maybe the hotel staff might be writing their on reviews? I'm hoping for the best with Days Inn for now.
Cruise life Posted October 18, 2011 #12 Share Posted October 18, 2011 ITA, I find it difficult to understand how a hotel can get such a low overall score...didn't the reviewers rate based on comps? Of course, a Days Inn is not a suite hotel or a resort or a high-end place. After looking some more, you find reviewers that appear to be rating based on similar properties (giving 3s and 4s). I believe the Expedia overall rate was 2.9. We are staying put...it's a sleep stop for us and a parking area. We have never had a terrible experience at a Days Inn. I was shocked at my first glance, though, have to admit. It will be fine:)

We also have never had a bad experience at a Days Inn. I think some people that rate these hotels are expecting the Four Seasons for a budget price. royalcruz Posted October 23, 2011 #15 Share Posted October 23, 2011 Look at hotels in Plantation near University Dr. and in north Fort Lauderdale on Cypress Creek Rd. These are generally safe neighborhoods and not touristy. Boca Raton is also a very nice area 40 minutes north of the port.
Rare PatriciaF Posted October 23, 2011 #16 Share Posted October 23, 2011 We are staying at the SpringHill Suites FLL Airport (really in Dania Beach) just off I-95. We stayed there last year before our cruise on the Emerald. A fellow cruiser had used PL and got it for $65--versus the amount we paid. This time we are using Marriott points. royalcruz Posted October 23, 2011 #19 Share Posted October 23, 2011 The Days Inn on Oakland Park Blvd is not in a nice neighborhood. Personally, I wouldn't leave my car there and I would double lock the doors at all times.

Gathina Posted December 15, 2011 #21 Share Posted December 15, 2011 I would look at Deerfield Beach...there are several hotels in that area..near Isle One Casino if you like that sort of thing, you can find some chain hotels and mom and pop places. You can also probably find something for around 100.00 or a little less. Your about 25 minutes or less from Fort Lauderdale port and about 45 from Miami. You are near the beach, casino, a lot of shops/restaurants and it's kinda a funky area..large population of Brazilians there. I know every one asks about hotels, but we are looking for something a little different than most. We will be driving in, so does not have to be very near airport. calex1976 Posted February 1, 2012 Author #22 Share Posted February 1, 2012 We just got back from our cruise, it was great. We stayed at the Days Inn Airport South. It was very nice, not a resort, but if you just want a nice place to sleep it was fine. A Dennys is next door also there is a gas station very close. A drug store is about one mile a way that carries plenty of cruise essentials. The rooms were very nice, staff was great also. Although it is next to many busy roads we never heard any road noise. We paid $143 for room tax and all. That included up to 28 days of free parking and a free shuttle to the docks. If you are driving in I would not suggest parking at the dock. That place is a mad house with 5 other ships boarding. With the free parking and free shuttle the price was very good. A taxi back cost us $20, just jump in the first shuttle you see. Don't stand in the Taxi line, you will be there for a long time.
