ottmar Posted October 13, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 13, 2011 I like to take my beer with me into the main dining rooms. In looking at the deck plans of the Star where we are on deck 8 near Endless Summer and Blue Lagoon. There are also places near the dining rooms, like La Cucina and Le Bistro on deck 6 near the Aqua dining room or the Red Lion and Spinaker Lounge on deck 7 when going down to the Versailles dining room. My question is: can I walk into any of these places and buy a Fosters Oil Can beer and take it with me to the dining room WITHOUT it being opened at the bar? These beer questions are really important to me because I will not start any part of the meal without my beer and I am told it takes forever to send the waiter and the food may be cold by then. ....Ott

monicajay Posted October 13, 2011 #8 Share Posted October 13, 2011 Yes, bring it. Beer service in the dining room is very slow. This is particularly important with freestyle as the waiters don't get to know you and your wishes. On lines with fixed dining my DH makes it clear that he wants a beer as soon as he sits down. The waiter then usually gets it right. On Costa we had X1 card and the waiter always had 2 beers for my husband, 1 bottle of water and 1 bottle of wine waiting for us at our table upon arrival. rvsullivan Posted October 13, 2011 #9 Share Posted October 13, 2011 I would not go to a specialty restaurant for a beer. They don't typically have a bar in there and would have to go to a bar for your drink just like they do in the MDR. If you want to take one with you, I would swing into one of the bars and get it. Thanks, ....Ott No...go into a bar, not a specialty restaurant, to buy your beer. The restaurants don't have stand alone bars in them, and the waiters are there to serve the diners in the restaurant, not to chase after a can of beer for someone who will be bringing it to another restaurant. Thanks, ....Ott Why would you want to  ? Whether you can "walk into a specialty restaurant and buy a beer to go", I can't possibly see where you would want the hassle. The specialty restaurants don't have a stand alone bar and have a maitre'd that you first have to swipe your card to accept the charge of the restaurant and then wait to be seated. Wouldn't it be far easier to just stop at any of the bars along route to pick up your beer to go? The Red Lion is seldom that busy before later in the evening to stop and grab one or 2 on the way to Versailles and you can either stop at the casino bar or gatsby's on the way to Aqua. BTW If my memory serves me correctly you can't get from La Cucina directly to the Aqua diningroom.

sdmike Posted October 14, 2011 #16 Share Posted October 14, 2011 My guess is you could stand almost anywhere on an NCL ship and say "I need a beer" and a beer fairy will magically appear to take your order and charge your card $6.95 plus 18% gratuity. :D But seriously, you probably can't walk 50 strides on a cruise ship without coming across a bar
ottmar Posted October 14, 2011 Author #17 Share Posted October 14, 2011 This is our eleventh or twelfth cruise, I don't keep a close count, and for the last few on both Princess and Royal Caribbean we have taken anytime/my time dining options and found that with a different waiter, especially if we sit at a large table which is our preference, the beer comes long after the meal which is not what I want so I started to bring one from a bar with me which works OK. Since this is our first time on NCL I have tried to find out where I could and where I should not hunt for beer close to the main dining rooms... With often convoluted names I didn't know which were bars and which were pay dining venues. All the other lines we cruised had just one steak restaurant and one Italian restaurant and all else were bars. I rarely have a drink of any kind between meals but I want my beer with the meals, breakfast excluded. So now I found them on the deck plans, but would not have guessed that Gatsby's is a bar. Thank you all, it is a fun thread. ....Ott
