Just how bad is smoking on the Noordam
Why are they being rude when they are smoking where they are allowed to? I would say they were being rude if they smoked outside of the allowed areas, but really . . . I'm afraid that your desire to "slap the cigarette out their mouths" is behavior that is considered rude.
Unfortunately, society is becoming more and more intolerant against various minorities, such as non-smokers, etc. Most non-spokers, like me, believe that smokers and non-smokers can co-exist as long as rules are followed and, even though I am allergic to cigarette, after many HAL cruises, I have never been uncomfortable on a HAL ship. The only way to make some non-smokers happy is to ban somoking alltogether and that will not happen until HAL is sure that they will still be making profits. I have noticed that on the last three HAL cruises, there was a separate comment page included with the regular survey asking passengers about how they feel about smoking on board.
Rather than an outside (oceanview) stateroom, why not save some more money & book an inside (interior) stateroom? It would save hundreds of dollars with the only difference being the (lack) of a tub & window! :)
LOL...we're easing our way down the ladder from verandah staterooms! Maybe an inside next time. I am somewhat claustrophobic (hate having curtains drawn, shades pulled, etc.) so am not so sure I can do an Inside. But it's definitely on my "think about it" list!

We're in 420 on the Maasdam which is on the stern and next to a door out to the LP...so I think that'll be OK. Actually, I would prefer a shower to a tub and on our most recent Noordam cruise, booked one of the few verandah staterooms with a shower!
It seems as though they wanted to ease into it a little slower than Princess or Celebrity. Look how long it took Princess to wake up after the fire on the Sun back in 2006! Give it another year & I'd bet they eliminate the balcony smoking also. Keep voicing you complaints & it might even happen sooner.

I remember that well...that was the first year we cruised and our 1st was on the Caribbean Princess! It was determined that fire was directly related to smoking, wasn't it?

It was the Star Princess that had a fire in 2006.

No it was not. Report indicated that it may have been related but no definitive link could be made. No determination and no direct causation. Sorry!

We were on this first cruise after the Star fire. The crew told us that the fire was started by alcohol that had been ignited. What wasn't determined is if the alcohol had spilled accidentally and was ignited by a discarded cigarette or if the people were playing around and it was deliberately set on fire, something called a flaming shot (?) From what I remember it was never determined exactly what happened.

Most likely since there aren't to many open flames on deck. The non smokers will of course say it wasn't proven for sure.

You're right about that. I keep getting them mixed up. :o To many cruises & they all seem to run together after a while. ;)

I agree with your TA about the smoking in the casino but I disagree with nightlife on the Noordam. Took it a year ago and it was so much fun. The Piano Bar, the Crows Nest, Queen's Row. We danced every night, did a pub crawl, sang our lungs out...we had fun!

Don't forget BB Kings. It is so popular and there's dancing.
