No Bermuda in 2013 for HAL

Since nobody has brought up the 2009 press release from HAL, regarding Veendams new Bermuda run, I'll mention it.

I recall seeing something in that statement: that HAL signed a 10 year contract with the Bermuda govt to dock on the island.

Is Seattle tempting a court date?

Or maybe it's fairly easy for a big corporation to find these loopholes to get out of these situations.

So, if I call HAL and request a Bermuda/Carib brochure for 2012-2013, they'll tell me they don't make them anymore ?? :(

Yes. That is what they will tell you...... assuming the person with whom you are speaking knows they no longer have any brochures except the 'cruise atlas'.

No more cruise planner, no more Europe brochure, or The Americas etc

I could be (probably am) very wrong but are you sure you aren't thinking of the contract Princess and HAL signed to dock at Crown Bay in St. Thomas? If my memory serves at all, I think that is a ten year contract.

I do not recall anything about a ten year contract for Bermuda but do remember HAL hoping Bermuda would choose to permit the casino to be open while docked but Bermuda decided to not allow that.

Thanks for the bad news. :(

Something that I always looked forward to in the coming year has come to an end. Thank you, bean-counters.

It does sound like the Crown Bay arrangement ... but the Bermuda contract is a different animal. I remember reading it when the 2009 BDA schedule was announced. I'll see if I can find the printout of that, and replicate it here.

Looks like Carnival's out too.

"Carnival Cruise Lines has apologised for a last-minute change in scheduling which has seen it drop 11 of 12 planned visits to Bermuda next year.

Carnival Cruise Lines has apologised for the last-minute change of heart, but says it’s done nothing wrong by axing 11 out of its 12 planned visits to Bermuda.

Government has little choice but to accept the cancellation as a huge financial loss to the Island because the cruise ship company never signed a contract.

The 2012 scheduling negotiations between Carnival and bosses at the Ministry of Transport are understood to have taken place via e-mail.

It is understood that Carnival indicated its intention to make 12 voyages to the Island next year and Government confirmed that there was berth space available.

But with no legal document in place, Carnival has been able to slash its presence in Bermuda to just one trip without any kind of penalty.

The late cancellation will be a huge blow to Bermuda’s economy as it is expected to result in a “considerable loss” of revenue.

Transport Minister Terry Lister remains in the dark about why Carnival pulled the plug on its Bermuda’s sailings, but the decision was probably based on negative passenger feedback. It has been suggested that public transport problems that left cruise ship passengers stranded in the summer and casinos being unable to operate while in port could be to blame.

We were just in Hamilton in June on the Veendam. Loved being just steps from downtown and seeing Front Street from our window! We were also supposed to stop in St. George, but they had equipment problems at the port, so we had an extra day in Hamilton. HAL gave everyone a ferry pass for the inconvenience, which was great.

Bermuda is a wonderful place to visit, and being in the center of the island on a smaller ship made a huge difference. I wouldn't have liked staying out at King's Wharf with the megaships. If you haven't been yet, I'd highly recommend going!

We will have to find a time to go next year. We have a timeshare in Disney and carried last year's points to this year so it will be tough but somehow we will HAVE to find a way to cruise Veendam to Bermuda one more time.

I think I was in mourning when Celebrity sold Zenith after getting rid of Horizon and now once I found the perfect small ship with a great Bermuda itinerary (NOT at the Dockyard), it's ending too.
