I was thinking the same thing. We sail on NAV in Feb., and I really don't want to sail away in the dark!! Oh, well...
Don't be disappointed. We have done sail-a-ways out of San Juan in the dark. It is pretty neat seeing everything lit up.
On the Liberty today it was simply a matter of complete lack of organization, no communications and utter chaos! The cruise staff allowed guests to sit on the floor right inside the theater doors and in the halls rather than making them take seats breaking every rule in the fire marshall's book. The staff looked afraid rather than confident and in charge. At one point he actually announced "When we call your tag number make your way to deck one on your own. No one will be leading you." Of course most people went straight to the closest elevator and ended up at the wrong end of the ship on deck 1 where they were sent back to walk through the casino and to the other end of the ship. No announcements, no communications, no help!
I've experienced debarkations like that and they are not fun ... tend to be on shorter cruises (perhaps with more new cruisers) and fairly recently after the ship has arrived at a new homeport (perhaps still getting the routine down of a new place and new crew).

Exactly! And with more new cruisers or those who only come out for the holiday cruises it's the time the staff should be geared up to enforce the rules. We've heard all the reasons folks can't sit in the middle of the floor, on the stairs, etc. so many times we could give the speech. Why no staff member could do that today is simply impossible to understand. The new homeport thing is understandable, as is all of the ships in port today but none of those should stop the staff from being prepared, trained and, most importantly, in-charge!

I guess we've just become so used to all of our recent excellent and easy boardings/debarkations that a bad one is surprising. When you know how easy they can make it is really confounding when it doesn't happen. But at least it can never take away from a great cruise experience!

The days start getting longer again in only 4 short weeks. In Feb. it will be lighter than it is now at the same time. You won't be sailing in the dark.
Don't get the math. 55000 Pax / 8 ships = 7 thou per ship. These ships don't average that much.
People are also getting off the ships. 55000/8 = 6,875 PER SHIP... Divide that by two...3,438 guests per ship. That's not at all unrealistic.

Oh Ok Sorry for being a dumb dumb:o

Was confused because the article said
If you like to watch cruise ships, there'll be no better time than Saturday at Port Everglades.

The port expects to break its own world record of 53,365 cruise passengers to depart a port in a single day, set March 20, 2010.

Well, I guess if you get technical... 27,000 will be departing the port and going home, and the other 27,000 are departing on their cruises! :) ;)

By now we should all know the press doesn't worry about getting things technically correct if slight errors make for better headlines...

Since a few of the ships were smaller I think they used max occupancy in the calculation even though we are in one of the slowest cruise weeks of the year now.
