Blondie008 Posted March 12, 2012 #3 Share Posted March 12, 2012 I have just heard that you can smoke in the rooms, is this correct:confused::mad: I am really concerned now just what have i got myself in for:( Smoking is allowed inside all cabins on Costa aside from Samara cabins. However, feedback from numerous non smokers, say they "never knew" had there been a smoker or not, prior to their stay in their cabin. In my research prior to booking, this was something I came across often. They must do a very good job of ozonating the cabin. If however, this still bothers you, you might want to choose a different line OR choose one of the Samsara cabins. Smoking is also allowed in indoor lounges. (Not in theatres and restaurants.) If smoking is a deciding factor in choosing a cruise for you, then you may well wish to reconsider. Some smokers choose Costa as it has a more liberal policy than many other lines. You might want to look at a line which had a firmer non smoking policy. If you search this forum, you will find a very good post which lists all the cruise line's smoking policies. Yorkie Mom Posted March 12, 2012 #4 Share Posted March 12, 2012 Costa is an European ship and they smoke everywhere. One of the things I did not like about Costa. Just remember a budget cruise is a budget cruise.
Blondie008 Posted March 12, 2012 #5 Share Posted March 12, 2012 What has "budget cruise" got to do with smoking? That aside, I paid £1589 cruise only, each for 8 nights..is that really "budget"?? I am pretty sure their pricing now is very much on a par with lines such as P&O, Carnival etc.. BUT - smoking has nothing what so ever to do with "budget" Explain

Depends how late you like to book and how strong your nerves are :) Yes, smoking is allowed in the cabins plus each bar is divided into smoking and non-smoking. Very civilised. It was the first time I've cruised where I haven't felt treated as a 2nd class passenger and was able to enjoy a ciggie with a drink. By the way, I didn't see any non-smokers were bothered by the smoking - there was none of that fake coughing and hand-waving.

Costa's website is very clear on its smoking policies unlike NUMEROUS hotels and some other cruise lines who opt not to mention NON smoking policies. It is up to YOU to research, just as smokers do, should a policy effect you so much. In actual fact, you will probably be fine with the cabin, I would say you need to be more concerned about the public areas where for sure, you will encounter smoking areas. Best you cancel now and consider changing to a line such as Celebrity. We were regulars with Celebrity for years, and faced losing deposits when they (AFTER we booked our cruise), changed their policy. We wont cruise with them anymore, dont whine about it, just dont put our money there. There is no point in you going ahead with the cruise and then spending it moaning about smokers as you now know, this is an issue for you. From Costa's website Is it possible to smoke onboard? In the Theatres, Restaurants, Buffet Restaurant (indoor), corridors, halls, lifts and in the stairwells smoking is strictly forbidden. There are reserved smoking areas in the lounges. Pipes and cigars may only be smoked in designated areas. For fire and safety reasons please remember to put cigarettes in the ashtrays provided and never throw cigarettes overboard To upgrade to a Samsara cabin do a "dummy" booking online and that will give you a rough idea of costs although your agent should be able to offer you a slightly better price. These cabins come with many Spa perks and speciality Samsara restaurant dining. There are various Samsara categories from Inside up to Suite. Cost will depend on what you have now, and which Samara category you wish to upgrade to. Just do remember however, that as stated above, smoking IS allowed in public areas. Sounds to me like you might want to seriously think about transferring your deposit (or take it back in full if you can) and consider a different cruise line more apt to your requirements. If you seach "smoking" in this forum, you will find a very good post by Joanie which gives a good account of current policies.
chrispb Posted March 13, 2012 #11 Share Posted March 13, 2012 HIYA CHRIS!!How was your cruise? Enjoy??? :) Hi Blondie, yes we thoroughly enjoyed it. Missed out on Abu Dhabi though as there was a wind called the Shamal(?)blowing strongly further up the coast so the Captain didn't think it would be calm enough to dock safely. We had an extra day in Dubai which was fine with me.:) Can't think what those people who grumble about the food meant - unless they missed their hotdogs and burgers??? I find there are more similarities than differences on all the mass cruise lines, ie if it upsets people not to have a bathrobe then stick to HAL - the small things just don't bother me;) I'm sure we'll be sailing with Costa again. It's a budget cruise until your average disaster vulture calls the line to reserve only to discover that Costa isn't cheaper. There have been several anti-Costa posts upset about the lack of price drops post Concordia. One recent thread complained that Costa quoted her/him a more expensive price than on Celebrity for a comparable cabin on a shorter cruise. The poster then ranted that the line was doomed. Curious sentiment given the stated interest in cruising them enough to investigate their prices. The funniest comments center on the claim that you always get what you pay for when selecting cruises. I usually get far more than I pay for by booking off peak and watching various ships and lines for specials.
wurmine Posted March 14, 2012 #14 Share Posted March 14, 2012 We cruised on Costa Atlantica some weeks ago and smoking was allowed in the cabins. Our cabin did not have any smell and I guess most people smoke on the balcony, if the cabin has one. The only place the smoking policy bothered me, was the atrim/lobby- we had to pass thrugh several times a day with two little children and it was very "smoky". In the bars, the AC must have been good, I saw people smoking, but never smelled it. If smoking bothers you, Costa is probably not the best line, I have to say. Also, many people smoke on the balconies, so you get smoke there too.

Capricruiser Posted April 2, 2012 #18 Share Posted April 2, 2012 On this thread there certainly are a lot of pros and cons some by smokers and some by non-smokers. I am a frequent Costa cruiser and a non-smoker and can assure both categories that smoking is not a problem for 95% of the passengers, whether they smoke or not. Aside from the casinos and cigar lounges where smoking is allowed throughout, one can avoid the smoking areas in lounges by just staying in or walking through the non-smoking side. If a non-smoker is super sensitive he might smell a slight tobacco odor when passing through but nothing terrible. I can truthfully say that I have NEVER had a cabin with a residual smoking smell on a Costa ship and very rarely have smelled cabin smoke when passing through the corridors. I personally believe it to be a non-issue and too many people moan about it both ways, making the proverbial mountain out of a mole hill.

But then we no longer cruise with our former favourite Celebrity (six years of cruising with them). We dont whinge about it though, just do our research before our cruise and put our money where we can happily smoke. Loved Carnival, and am sure we will adore NeoRomantica. Celebrity in fact kind of did us a favour, as we have since explored new lines, and finding them every bit as fun as our cruises on X. In fact, better partying on Carnival for sure and way better live music. I am sure you have plenty choice now, clearly Costa is not the one for you. It does surprise me however, as it has often been said that Costa make a fanastic job of air purifying, and although there are smoking areas, they are well ventilated. Happy future cruising, with the line which suits you best .:)
