period between cruises is there any place in or near the port to wait out the time between ships? If so, how is the best way to get there?

Your two ships may or may not be located close to each other and generally are not located within walking distance of the port exit/entrance. Civitavecchia port uses shuttle busses to transport passengers and their luggage to/from their ship to/from the port entrance. So as you exit the first ship, you'll get on a shuttle bus which takes you to the entrance of the port complex. From their you can then catch a different free port shuttle to the second ship. Depending on how you time things, you may be able to wait just a few minutes and get off one bus and then on the second bus -- probably only works around the 9:30 to 10:30 time frame.

Within a 50-100 yards or so of the port entrance you can walk on sidewalks to a McDonalds, a few cafe type places, a few shoppes, etc. There are also some park benches where you can sit and people watch in that same area. Obviously, you'll need to deal with your luggage so you'll go as far as you want. If you want to venture further away, you'll find more stores and eating options. It's a decent size city. If you don't want to leave the bus stop area, there are benches at the bus stop too if I recall. You might just want to sit there for an hour or so until you can board the shuttles to your second ship. Hopefully, the weather is nice and you can enjoy the time.

If you wait so that you are one of the last ones off your first ship, you may be able to check your luggage with the porters for your second ship and only need to deal with your hand luggage while you wait to board.

There's a lively town and shopping area only a few blocks from the cruise port; as you exit the port you'll find the McDonald's mentioned above, just past that you turn left on Largo Plebiscito and walk a few blocks into town. You can see all this on a google map and get a good sense of what you'll find there using the street view.

If you get off the first ship at the end of the debarkation process, you should be able to go to the second ship and drop off your luggage.

This sounds great! Does the shuttle bus take us to the 2d ship after we get out luggage? Spending a few hours in town between debarkatiopn and boarding sounds like a good idea without the luggage to tote around!:D

You'll need to change buses at the port entrance - the shuttles run non-stop from the pier, to the central pick up zone, and to the designated pier. Each bus has a sign showing the cruise line they're going to. I know last year we got on our bus around 9:30 (we were just a little anxious :D ) and RCI boarded us around 10:15. I'm thinking that once you drop your bags off you probably won't need to check in, but get on the next bus going back.
