Chair Hogs - Don't Moan - Do Something About It

We just got off the Freedom of the Seas. (a B2B Sept 16 - 30).

Yes, chair hogs are alive and well.

We didn't get chairs in the main pool area - too noisy, (ie kids, TV system, pool games, etc)

We prefer the quieter Solarium. Yes, we understand its smaller, and not EVERYONE can get a chair in there, but when you go up there at 10 AM, and every single chair has a towel on it, yet maybe 12 people in the pool or hot-tub, well... you know its the chair hogs.

One thing that people seem to think is okay - get up early, put your towel on a chair, then go to breakfast, maybe do some shopping, play Bingo, and then show up just before noon to finally use "YOUR" chair.

Sorry, but after the 30 minutes, we just moved your stuff, then re-located your chair, and are now actually USING it. :D

And if the offending party has a problem with, it, I'll gladly explain RCI's rules about chair hogs, and they can take it up with Guest Relations.

We just did this for the last two weeks, and had no problem "finding" chairs.

BTW - I only saw a "Deck Patrol" person once, over by the main pool area, so enforcement was limited to just two small signs erected close to the spa entrance.

Too bad that, in general, Royal doesn't go after chair hogs as zealously as they do booze smugglers. If they spent as much energy on chair hogs as they do worrying about someone bringing a bottle of wine on-board, there wouldn't be any issues with finding a lounger any time of the day.

Exactly!!! ;)

Also - if someone dares to move my stuff on Monarch next month, they will be moving my son's insulin pump. I can guarantee that it will not be pretty!

That's another thing to consider. Do you know what you're moving? Are you moving a towel or someone's personal belongings? If you move my bag, you'll be moving medical equipment worth thousands of dollars. If I am not with the bag, I'm sure I will be in the pool right by the bag - with my stuff in a chair right by the pool.

I think we are talking about the obvious signs of chair hogging - a lone towel with maybe a book or flip-flop. ;) (see pics on pages 1 & 2)

In your case, you are nearby, and not leaving your insulin pumps on chairs unattended for long periods of time. Well I hope you aren't.

I wouldn't leave anything worth more than a few dollars alone on a chair if I couldn't watch it at all times from wherever I am (hot-tub, pool, etc)

Because unfortunately, I've seen crew scolded for getting in to it with passengers. I can understand their hesitancy to enforce rules sometimes. They don't seem to have much support from above.

And that is exactly what is going on....Cruise Companies are in competition to fill each cruise...

Every passenger, no matter what, is nothing more than a $$ in their eyes.

I am sure the staff has it drilled into their heads, that they should NEVER do anything to get a $$ upset or to have a unpleasant experience...

A crew member can be in big trouble if they are singled out for making a passenger unhappy.

It's what they are taught to do over and over.....

They're hands are tied...on one hand they know there are rules...on the other they do not dare do anything that would make a passenger unhappy.

They could loose their job...

Standards in the MDR?? Forget it!! You will only get 50% upset. The other 50% will complain, but put up with it and continue cruising...nothing lost.

This is true all over the ship, where ever rules should be, and are not enforced.

$$ talks, and unless their #'s start to drop, they will continue with what is working for them, because people will continue using their product. So the complaints can't be as bad as they seem. Just words.....revenues still holding.....corporate is pleased....

We ave been on other cruise lines, and will not go back for one reason or another...

I always find physical threats rather comical. It would be worth getting thrown on my A$$ to see them escorted off the ship. I can promise you, if anyone ever puts their hands on me, in front of 100 witnesses, I WILL get them thrown off!

Here here - I totally agree !! Maybe even thrown off before we reach a port - ha ha ha !

Wow.

Why are you letting something so important unattended on a lounge chair? Are you looking for trouble. My, why dont you leave your credit cards, camera, and jewelry there too?

You mean you cannot take the time to return to your cabin, properly clean the site off before you reapply the pump:eek:. You are swimming without the pump, what is 5 more min walking back to your cabin to safely attach it in privacy.

Safe travels.

No kidding. If my child's health depended on a piece of medical equipment I personally wouldn't leave it unattended on a lounge chair. When not in use it would be safely locked in my cabin but to each their own I guess.

We discovered that chair hogging is a cultural thing. We cruised on the Rhapsody in Australia and more that 80 % of the passengers were from down-under. There were always lots of available chairs. People only took a chair when they were actually using it. It was very different than what we have experienced in the Caribbean. Even on sea days there was always a chair to be found, we noticed the difference on the first morning as we were walking after breakfast. Where were all the towels?

It was the only cruise where I regularly found a chair near the pool at any hour. I also had people offer one up. "Oh, my daughter has gone off with a friend, take this one for now."

Wish people could offer a chair instead of holding one for each and every family member.

Maybe we're confused about how this works. His Omnipod PDM is also his blood glucose meter. That doesn't stay in the room. It goes where he goes.

Also, I do leave my camera and credit cards in my bag! Shhhh.....

I really think it boils down to a person's general attitude. I can't see something as small as a towel in a chair ruffling my feathers. We own a business, have 2 little boys (one, obviously, with type 1 diabetes), 3 crazy dogs, and a decent-sized house and yard to maintain. When I go on vacation, I certainly don't sweat the small stuff.

Okay, 3 hours I get - but....

When I sailed on Majesty last month, we were out on the pool deck for the midnight buffet. They played music, and I was dancing. I maybe danced 1 or 2 songs and came back to my chair. Someone came up and pushed my stuff BACK in the chair and sat on the edge. When I came back to my chair, she wouldn't even look at me - just sat there on the end of the chair like I wasn't even there. My PURSE was still in the chair, but so was she!

LOL - OMG Too funny

I consider anyone who doesn't use their chair for the majority of time a Hog.

The fact that you're 3 feet away in the pool most of the day doesn't make a bit of a difference to me. I still consider you a hog.

The whole point is, if you're NOT using it most of time, why hog it from someone who would?

Oh right, because you got up early enough to do it..

Lamest reason ever.
