Thank you for the review of the new menu:), it was nice having the photos of food all in one review as a quick reference rather than having to scan through someones long review if you just looking for something food related.

The pics are pretty, but from what I read, it doesn't sound like the food was anything great. That's what I found when we were on the Oasis two weeks ago. I had the same Cesar Salad night after night. I ordered the steak and it was over-done and too tough to eat. I had it replaced with the chicken, which was blah. I mostly ate the pasta, which was no big deal. I much preferred the desserts in the Windjammer. Yep, it's true!

I don't think you read The OPs review at all. Russ, the OP, praised many items, but also spoke of the portions that he didn't like. Lets be honest, steak in the MDR is never good, but the chicken should have been.

 

It is unfortunate that your experience was "poor", but don't take away from the OPs wonderful review and his good experience. If he thought the food was not anything special, like your interpretation of his review, why would he take the time to do such a thorough review. Food is very subjective, and for you it was not up to your liking. Perhaps you should have done your own review instead of negatively commenting on this well done and thorough review.

 

 

 

I have reposted the OPs overall impressions below.

 

Overall, while not comparable to a 5 star NY city dining experience, which I never expected for the price of a cruise, I was extremely happy with the new menus and the food on the Oasis compared to a year ago on the Liberty. I only hope the food is this good on the Independence of the Seas when I sail on her next March.

 

Cheers, and congratulations to RCCL on improving their MDR offerings over what they were a year ago. Definitely a step in the right direction.

wrong-a-mundo. the food is great on Allure. Never ordered the "default" steaks, but when it was the nightly feature, it was delicious.

 

Curious what do you consider "good" at home in terms of restaurants?

Russ, thanks for the food review. When you do your other review of the rest of your trip will you post the link or title here? I'm afraid I will get back to work and lose track and not find it. At least this thread I'm subscribed to so it is much easier to locate :) great photos and thanks for the menus.

There is an entire wine list on the table each evening. Some bottles costing up to $2000 (plus a 15% gratuity on top of that). Enjoy.

Finally getting around to posting a pictorial review of our Oasis trip that we enjoyed last month.

 

I did 4 posts tonight with not too many photos. I plan on having lots more photos in the coming days in the review (I deleted over 1000, but still have about 1000 that I decided to keep since I thought the quality of them was good).

Thanks for the compliments.

I used to do a fair bit of photography up until University, about 20 years ago. I gave up on it and just used a point and click for the past 20 year until I saw a photo review of the Oasis of the Seas on CruiseCritic. The photos were outstanding and I asked what type of camera the poster used. He used a Nikon 5100.

 

I went out and purchased one late last summer and it is now a hobby I love again. I am still figuring out how to use it, but love it. One of the keys is having a good lens to use. The lens I used on all of the food photos is a Nikon AF-S Micro Nikkor 60mm 1:2.8G. It is a fixed 60 mm lens that is especially made to permit doing macro photography. That is why the depth of field is narrow and the background is blurred out to emphasize the food dishes.

 

The food shots were done as typical portrait shots. I played with the macro feature a lot and will be featuring some of those shots in my upcoming review of the Oasis beginning next week.

 

I will post the next day's food (Monday's MDR meals) in about an hour or so...

 

We enjoy learning more about photography and bought our Nikon 5100 over a year ago, and hubby loves it! We have a fixed 35mm and an 18-200 lens my hubby adores. But I love taking macro shots, guess I really enjoy the clarity and detail in those types of shots. Now if I can talk him into getting the same 60mm lens you purchased :D

My D5100 came with an 18-55mm lens and a 55-300mm lens. The quality of those lenses are decent, but nowhere near as good as the 60mm macro lens I purchased. I managed to find it used on Kijiji for $300.

 

The next lens I would like to buy is the Tokina 11mm-16mm. It was just too hard to get good wide angled views of the ship's interiors with the 18mm setting on my current zoom lens. I have til Christmas to find that lens for a good price, so I will keep searching online. I hope you can talk your hubby into the macro lens. It is by far my favourite lens. Be sure to check out the link I posted above to see some of my other shots from the camera. I will likely take me a couple of weeks to get all of them posted since there are so many.

I am nobody's drinker by any stretch of the imagination, but I have tasted a chocolate martini. They are delish! So much so, that it kinda sneaks up on you if you have one too many... :o

The most bizarre tasting dessert of the week, and I have no clue what it was called. My wife said it tasted like a Ferrero Rocher and she was exactly right. It tasted just like one, right down to the texture and flavour. If you like Ferrero Rocher, you will like this dessert.

So, we leave VERY soon and since food is the focus of all of our vacations (we are the family talking about breakfast at dinner, lunch at breakfast....you get the idea), I was THRILLED to read this review. Then to read the above......YOU HAD ME AT ROCHER!!!!!!! Can't wait. Thanks for taking the time. :):D

Where did you eat first day? I am told that JR is open, so we were thinking of avoiding WJ and going there or to Park Cafe (depending on what we could get into). Any insight to provide? Thanks :)

I am not a fan of buffets, so I avoided the Windjammer all week. I went in once and it was ok at best. I tried about 10 items, absolutely loved 1 item, 3 or 4 were ok, and the rest I did not enjoy and did not finish. I simply do not enjoy food that has been sitting out for a while.

 

We went to the Park Cafe when we boarded (I assume that is what you mean by the first day). The line-up was right out the Cafe and into the Central Park area. A couple of employees were telling people that the line was long and we should go to the Windjammer and come back to the Park Cafe another day. NO WAY!!! The line took 5-10 minutes at most. I loved the station where you can order your salad the way you like it, the roast beef sandwiches were amazing (as long as you like them very pink), the other sandwiches were good too, kids loved the bags of chips, and the dessert were pretty good too.

 

I am not sure what you are referring to by the "JR" is open. If you can let me know, I may be able to confirm this for you.
