Port Lincoln, Western Australia, What to do?

Recommended Posts

We are doing a circumnavigation on HAL and will be in Port Lincoln on 11-15-13, from 8 am to 5 pm. Are there any private tour operators where the ship docks? Didn't see anything we liked on the ship's excursion list. Any suggestions?

Port Lincoln is in South Australia. It is where they did the underwater scenes for Jaws and Blue Water White death. So I think you can book a 'See the Great Whites' tour. I believe you can dive in a cage. It has been many years since I have been there so I don't really know the place that well. try some of the local seafood (King George Whiting and Coffin Bay Oysters). If you are into fishing you could probably get a charter.

Port Lincoln is in South Australia.

Port Lincoln is a beautiful spot to visit. You can do the shark dive (in a cage), I believe it is quite expensive and there is no guarantee that you will see a great white shark.

You can also go swimming with the Tuna, this is an organised tour and is excellent.

Port Lincoln have a couple of good wineries, Boston Bay wines and another called Dellacolline. I have had lunch at Dellacolline and the food is superb.

This is an excellent website for selecting things to see and do in Port Lincoln.

Where in Western Australia is your cruise stopping? I may be able to help with ideas.

Thanks for the info. I think the cage diving is out as my husband has seen Jaws too many times. LOL Will look into the winery though. We will be cruising to Exmouth, Perth, Esperance, Port Lincoln, Adelaide and Kangaroo Island while on the Western side of Australia. We are both outdoors kind of people and like tours that take you out to see some of the country, wildlife, beaches, forests, etc. I take lots of pictures. My husband is a beer drinker and always enjoys trying a beer to two when we are in the towns. Thanks again for your suggestions.

If you are going to Exmouth make sure you go to Turquoise Bay. Stunning and you snorkel from the beach. We love Exmouth. Not sure what time you will be there but one day we would like to go and swim with the Whale Sharks.

Looks like this is a very unique cruise with ports not regularly visited by the majority of cruise ships viz Exmouth, Port Lincoln, Kangaroo Isl. Good on HAL for looking outside the square. You will have a great cruise. If you are sailing West to East then you have a better chance of smooth sailings as the sea will be behind you.

Comment re geography: Exmouth, Perth (Fremantle) and Esperance are ports in the state of Western Australia with Exmouth being in the tropical north and Esperance in the temperate south. Port Lincoln, Kangaroo Island and Adelaide are in the state of South Australia (on the southern side of the continent - not western). These ports are relatively near to each other - check out Mr Google's maps.

I have posted previously on Esperance and there is a fantastic tour operated independantly by the tourist board (Visit Esperance). This would make an ideal choice for your roll call. Lots of beaches, outback scenery and wildlife.

This is one of the threads on Esperance - there are others if you do a search. The link on post # 15 in the below thread will link you to other threads on Esperance. Check it out.

Enjoy your cruise.

If your husband is a beer drinker get him to try the Coopers Sparkling Ale and Pale Ale while in South Australia. In WA try a couple of the Little Creatures Beers and if in Perth go to the Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle. If I was in Adelaide for a day I would do a wine tour to the Barossa or McLaren Vale. On Kangaroo Island go to Seal Bay and Flinders Chase. Do try the King George Whiting (fish) if you get a chance.

Thank you Hugh. I did check your thread and got hold of the tour company to book a Cape LeGrand tour that sounds very similar to what you did. The tour company goes by Experience Esperance Coach Tours now, but sounds like it goes to some of the beautiful spots you listed in your thread. Can't wait!

Hi Oz Steve. My husband is excited about trying the beers you mentioned. The ship will be staying overnight in Fremantle so we should be able to go to the Little Creature's Brewery. On Kangaroo Island, do you know if there are tours available from the tender dock? The ship's shore excursions don't show any trips to Flinders Chase, but they do have one going to Seal Rock. Would love to do both if we could. Thanks for your info.

Now you sir, are a man of excellent taste! :p

PS, you don't have to be male to enjoy these beers! Women love them too. Pale Ale is the best beer in the world! Thanks Tim (Cooper)!

Seal Bay is great. Visitors can take an escorted walk through a sea lion colony. Flinders Chase is a fair distance away (at the western end of the island) and you might need your own transport. Check if you can hire a car. If so, you could go to Seal Bay, then Flinders Chase where there are kangaroos, koalas, seals on the rocks and amazing rock formations. The animals are in the wild but are easily seen.

Port Lincoln is the tuna fishing capital of Austalia and many millionaires live there so I'd spend my shore time on the look-out for a rich single man! LOL!

Just kidding! :D

  • 2 months later...

Just in case any one is interested in a private tour in Port Lincoln, I've found a local tour company, Goin' Off Safaris.

They are a local based company which showcases the many secrets of the region & will be conducting just 2 different day tours for cruise ship passengers. The full itinerary for the day is yet to be finalized, but both trips will feature "local wildlife, beautiful beaches, wild & rugged yet breathtaking scenery and of course the freshest seafood in total comfort and affordability!"

You can check out their day trips at their website at www.goinoffsafaris.com.au or email them at: info@goinoffsafaris.com.au

I'm not sure if they have posted their cruise ship day trips yet, but I've already booked a tour with them, Exploring the Rugged South Coast, which sounds amazing and is very affordable compared to the cruise ships excursions.
