Aussie Excitement in U.S.; Masters Golf Winner!!

Recommended Posts

Just got done watching the famed Masters golf tournament from Augusta, Ga. this evening. Two of the top three players were from Australia. From this web media source, they have this headline: "Adam Scott wins US Masters to end Aussie hoodoo" with these highlights: "Adam Scott ended decades of Australian disappointment when he became the first player from his country to win the Masters with a gripping playoff victory over Angel Cabrera at Augusta National today. Scott sealed the win with a 15-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole. Scott and his Kiwi caddie Steve Williams spent a long time lining up the Australian's putt before he settled and stroked the ball toward the hole, loud roars erupting around the green when it disappeared into the cup."

Third (and in contention for much of the tournament) was Jason Day, also from Australia. Day is married to a gal from Ohio. Both of them live in nearby Dublin (where my wife works and Jack Nicklaus has his Memorial golf tourney). Jason Day is kind of like a neighbor!!

Congratulations to Australia!! In past many great golfers from Aussie land have been very close to winning (including Greg Norman on three different times). This help build the excitement for our first “down under” visit, Jan. 20-Feb. 3, 2014, Celebrity Solstice sailing, departing Sydney, going from Australia to Auckland/NZ doing 14 days on this ship. Wonder how many people stayed up late, late in Australia to watch this big win here?

Yes Terry we Aussie golfers are really excited at Adam's great win, especially those of us who are from the Gold Coast as Adam grew up and started his golf here. Jason Day went to school at Kooralbyn which is also in our area.

Well done Adam and Jason - you have made us very proud !!!

Agree exciting morning for Australians, especially Queenslanders.

Congratulations Adam and Jason!

Yes, many Aussies would have been up since the wee hours watching on TV, Terry.

I guess Dublin is in Ohio, Terry.

I was driving into work and there were a couple radio stations covering every shot live. I thought he had blown it, Angel was so solid and Scott couldn't buy a put for 17 holes. It was amazing to see him one putt the 18th and both playoff holes to clinch the title - really stood up under pressure and totally redeemed after his British Open disappointment.

It was a brilliant effort! Cabrera was such a gentleman at the end. It was bad luck for him to lose after playing so well, but so exciting for Adam. I was sitting on the edge of my seat, and could hardly watch the playoff. Congratulations to both of them for such a nail-biting and exciting finish!

YES, it's fun sharing the excitement with those from Australia and especially those in the Queensland area. Very classy finish by Cabrera. I visited Argentina in 1987 and enjoyed that nation, its wine, design/style, etc.

Dublin is a suburb of Columbus (Ohio's state capital). Dublin is about seven miles to the northwest from our home where we live in the northern part of Columbus. Where we live is just two and a half miles north of the Ohio State University campus, the 105,000-seat Ohio Stadium, etc. OSU is the school where Jack Nicklaus, Jesse Owens, etc. attended school. And in this community where we have lived, we were on the street for 14 years where Barbara Bash lived before she married Jack Nicklaus at the church where we belong. It's fun having little connections to all of that sports history.

Congrats, again, to Australia for having such a great athletic history, including the top two of three Masters players yesterday. It all helps build the fun in preparing for our first visit to Australia.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

From the Sydney Morning Herald today, they have this headline: "Adam Scott's win a boost for golf tourism" with these highlights: "Teeing off at Adam Scott's favourite Australian courses could be high on the to-do list for overseas golfers after his US Masters win, tourism chiefs say. Scott, a tourism ambassador, says his top spots to play golf in Australia are Melbourne, the Sunshine and Gold Coasts and Barnbougle in Tasmania. Six Australian golf courses have made US Golf Magazine's top 100 courses of the world list.

ADAM SCOTT'S TOP AUSSIE GOLF HOLIDAY SPOTS:

1. Melbourne, Victoria: If you're able to organise it, play at Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath golf courses, two of the best in the world. Classic designed courses with great tournament history and a treat to play. Do the trip in January and take in the Australian Open tennis at the same time. Have a great steak at Vlados in Richmond, and take in The Stokehouse at St Kilda Beach for a meal with a view.

2. Sunshine Coast, Queensland: A fantastic part of the world. Great beaches, cafes and restaurants at Noosa, Eumundi market is around the corner and the hinterland areas are a great drive and just beautiful. Golf at Hyatt Coolum, Twin Waters and Peregian Springs in the morning, surf in the afternoon and nice al fresco eatery for dinner.

3. Gold Coast, Queensland: Golf courses everywhere, every imaginable style of accommodation, shopping centres, beaches and a casino. Pretty easy to find, plenty to do after or before a round of golf. Sanctuary Cove and Hope Island are good courses to play, stay at the Hyatt Sanctuary Cove and enjoy the village and marina a short walk away. Hire a car to drive to the casino to lose the money you won on the golf course."

4. Barnbougle, Tasmania: Two classic links golf courses not to be missed. They are as good as anything in the world. The new course at Lost Farm has great accommodation, spa and the like. Head down the road to try some wonderful Tasmanian wines, perhaps some lovely vintage Kreglinger champagne."[/i]

I am not a golfer. Too much time required. But, it is fun to watch. Hope these top Aussie golf spots are of interest. Do people in Australia agree on these top places? Helps building excitement for our Jan. 2014 trip/cruise going down under.
