Renting a convertible in Sydney

Hi all.

 

Currently planning to visit down-under for a cruise out of Sydney next Feb, followed by a couple of weeks driving the NSW coast to Melbourne, mebbe to Adelaide, & back to Sydney.

Would really like to rent a convertible, but although a google search for "convertible car hire Sydney", produces a lot of hire company & agency listings - some even quoting Mazda MX5 or Audi or BMW or Holden Astra convertibles - when I go to their websites I find zero convertibles offered. Perhaps because they offer those vehicles elsewhere in Aus but not Sydney?

 

Can anyone suggest any source in Sydney?

Or are convertibles not popular in Sydney in February for some reason. Like snow & ice :D

Very nice too, but way too rich for my pocket :eek:

Ditto a couple of other specialists - really a very special rental for a very special day or two.

 

Thinking more your average saloon like an Astra or a Golf but with a rag top. It's what we've always driven at home.

By dialling in Cairns rather than Sydney they're available from both international & local agencies. But Cairns is quite a long walk from Sydney cruise port ;)

 

We know that renting a rag-top version is usually way more expensive than the difference in the purchase prices, & we're prepared for that.

Try Europcar - they have an audi convertible at Sydney airport I believe . Just bear in mind it can be too hot in February to have the top down and definitely bring a hat! Also it can be very noisy at free way speeds so you probably wouldn't have the top down driving from Sydney to Melbourne.

I am sure JB knows that in certain types of weather the car roof may/will be needed. Unfortunately, I have not found any cheap convertables for you JB.:D

That maybe true but the uk has close to the most convertibles per car in the world - I had one in the uk and had the top down pretty much whenever it wasnt freezing or raining.When I moved to Australia I bought a little mg but rarely had the top down due to the strength of the sun - there are very few convertibles in oz per number of cars .

Yes, it needs more research to find a smaller car hire company that has them.:D

However I did check out Cairns, not that we're going there. Convertibles available there, though it's surely hotter than Sydney. The rental operators presumably know their market & don't rate Sydney as a good market-place for convertibles.

But in Cairns the cost of the simplest convertible, a VW Golf - which is the sort of car we'd envisaged - is more than double the cost of a tin-top equivalent.

We're used to paying a premium, but that's simply not value-for-money.

 

So we'll probably rent something ordinary but with air-con, & it won't be the end of the world. No rush, it's not til Feb.

 

Cruise & flights now booked, we have seven full days between flight arrival day & sailing day, plus a day & a half in Sydney before we fly home.

So I'll be asking for suggestions on which way to point the car.

 

I'll do that on a new thread cos this thread's title is irrelevant - would that best be asked on "Aus & NZ cruisers" or "Ports of Call, Aus"?

Sorry that you couldn't find one that suited, the holiday drive is what is great anyway, the car is just secondary. As mentioned either thread area will be fine.:D

Cairns is nowhere near as hot as Sydney in Summer. Its warmer year round but in February you can expect plenty of Sydney days hotter than Cairns and likely get a couple of days 40 degrees plus...hottest day in Cairns last summer was around 38 degrees, in Sydney 45.8 degrees (ouch!)

 

When you are here in February be prepared for some VERY hot weather! I'd go a nice airconditioned car for sure:D:D:D

His point was that it was easier to hire a convertable in Cairns than in Sydney, but he is not going there. In any case, a car with A/C is best for both comfort and value.:D

Now there is a drive, Perth to Sydney, where you need a month or more to stop and see the various sites along the way.:D
