Email from Royal RE:smoking
I am a loyal Royal Caribbean customer with over 20 cruises sailed. And I am a smoker; a very courteous smoker. One of the things I love about cruising is having a cup of coffee and a cigarette on my balcony. I've always made sure my neighboring balconies have no one on them, or I ask permission to smoke if they are occupied. 100 % of the time my neighbors have said go right ahead.
With this ban on Royal Caribbean, they have lost me as a customer. I dropped Princess for the same reason. I don't think I'll be sailing with Carnival, ever.
I guess you won't be cruising much then. Most, if not all, major cruise lines are heading in this direction. And not a moment too soon, IMO.
It's about money. No business makes any decision unless it will save them some or earn them more. For whatever reason, higher insurance rates/clean up after smokers or lack of bookings from people (the majority of which) who are non smokers, this is about the $$$ smokers cost the cruise line.
And the casinos make the cruise lines money...so I can't believe (although it wouldn't bother me any) that any cruise line will ever eliminate smoking in the casino.
Thank you for pointing out that this is a financial decision. It amazes me that some actually think this was done because Royal cares so deeply about our health!:p

Celebrity eliminated smoking in their casinos years ago (and currently allow no indoor smoking at all) and they are quite busy! DH loves three card poker and roulette and many evenings could not find a seat.

If this has already been asked, I am sorry - I did not read every post.

Who did this letter arrive from. I did not get it either. I do get every sale or new openings but that is it. I also did not receive a letter others did about the new credit card. I did try to email the marketing address that that letter came from and asked them to add me but did not get an answer from that either.

How can I get on a list to get these things?

Thanks for any help..

I am going on Rhapsody in 3 weeks time and have a balcony. Does this non smoking come into effect immediately. I hope so because when I cruised on Oasis of the Seas earlier this year I could not open my balcony door because I had chain smokers on their balcony next door all the time. - Just horrible. - Please tell me it starts immediately. Thanks Judy

From the email received...

Dear Friend,

In consideration of ongoing guest feedback and evolving industry standards, Royal Caribbean International is revising its onboard smoking policy, effective for all sailings departing on or after January 1, 2014.

Thank you - I did that again. I do notices for new cruise itinerary and for sales but nothing else.
Can anyone tell me where it came from? The letter about the credit card changes came from RCI Marketing which I never got either.

The new smoking policy was also sent out by RCI Marketing.

May I suggest that you call C&A 1-800-526-9723 and have them check your email address that appears in your profile on their screen. This is the location that really controls whether you get email notifications or not.
How come RCCL ships sailed full with smoking being such an issue? Can't understand that non-smokers really booked. Can anyone explain that to me?
I don't get it either, elou. So many non-smokers have suggested smokers go to other lines if they're not happy but it seems they didn't when they were unhappy. I guess it was more fun for them to hang around and whine.

Only going to increase the problem in my opinion.... unfortunately there are still a lot of passengers who smoke. Now they will all be in a confined to smaller areas and the smell will be horrific to those who complain. No more disco..... no more balcony (really people sit and chain smoke 24/7???? give me a break!), what next no smoking in the cigar lounge.... I think the complainers are sniffing too much "bunker oil" exhaust fumes on their balconies......
I am waiting for the day I can enjoy the casino every night on Royal and play my favorite slot machine...... In a non- smoking environment. My favorite machines (life of luxury progressives) seem to always be located in the smoking area. Can't wait for the announcement because I really think its only a matter of time.
Casinos in Ontario, Canada are non-smoking. The smokers freaked out initially but they got used to it.

Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines are all non-smoking in the casino and other public areas when they are in the Australian/Pacific region. It is lovely being able to access the casino without cigarette smoke :) hopefully one day they will change it to non-smoking in other regions of the world.
I smoked for 25 years but quit 10 years ago. DH quit nearly 5 years ago. I really can see both sides of this. Honestly, quitting was the hardest thing I ever have done. I still occasionally want a cigarette. I also like sitting in the smoking are in the mornings close to the pool deck. People are MUCH more friendly there. I also agree with the smoking on balcony ban because I have seen MANY cigarette butts fly over balconies.
When I was a kid I had a lit one land in an eye! No Fun.

Many booked other than balcony cabins. This new policy does not impact all categories, only those with ocean facing balconies.

Besides, royal has always been labled as a family line, why put flowriders, H2O zone, carousels, etc on the ship if you are not looking for families. Since other lines do not have all the same amenities, people made a choice to book inside, or go with a balcony and hope for a non smoker next door.

It sounds like most smokers here would be polite, but as usual, there are those smokers that have ruined it for all the rest. I have sailed in mainly balconies and never had an issue, obviously though there are some who have.

A question for smokers, I am currently in a hotel. The rooms, grounds etc are all non smoking. For those saying you need your smoke before leaving the room, what would you do in a hotel such as this? Most hotel chains are going non smoking totally. At least on the ship you still have a place you can go. Just trying to understand.

Oh, and if most of you only have a few cigarettes a day, you all will not be in the same place smoking at the same time, so yes it may have a few more smokers there, but I do not see it being that many.

It's simple, really. There are many factors that go into choosing a vacation. I'm thrilled that they have changed the smoking policy, but I still booked RCCL cruises from time to time, even before the policy change.

Similarly, many smokers who are disappointed with the policy change will continue to sail on RCCL ships. We have the ability to consider multiple factors, and with almost any choice, there are positives and negatives.
I am a exsmoker,,been 7years,,and yes, do have empathy for those who smoke...It took a good scare from my dr. to make me wake up,,and actually quit cold turkey,,won;'t admit to how many years we (hubby) and me smoked,,we are from that generation:)...
Our friends who we cruise with every year are still smoking,,and she enjoys her coffee and cig on the balcony in the morning...The masses treat smokers like they are criminals,,yes it stinks,,(can't realy stand the smell) and blah, blah,,but last time Ilooked it isn't a crime (yet) sure they will make it one with "big brother" always watching everything we do....
And have to also say,,feel 100& better since I quit,,go to gym classes and so nice to be able to take deep breaths again:cool:..
So that is my humble opinion:cool::cool:
Blah, blah, blah, and yes it STINKS!
