CI66774 Posted September 10, 2013 #51 Share Posted September 10, 2013
I am a loyal Royal Caribbean customer with over 20 cruises sailed. And I am a smoker; a very courteous smoker. One of the things I love about cruising is having a cup of coffee and a cigarette on my balcony. I've always made sure my neighboring balconies have no one on them, or I ask permission to smoke if they are occupied. 100 % of the time my neighbors have said go right ahead. With this ban on Royal Caribbean, they have lost me as a customer. I dropped Princess for the same reason. I don't think I'll be sailing with Carnival, ever.
Sorry - but there is no such thing as a "courteous smoker."

I will always check with my neighbor, if they are outside, if it bothers them I will listen for balcony doors to open and close and check to make sure they aren't outside, once they arrive I put it out. I'm sorry if you have had issues in the past and I will admit that there are some rude people out there, but there are a few that look out for those that don't

createcolorfun Posted September 10, 2013 #56 Share Posted September 10, 2013 question: How many people are ex smokers and how many have never smoked? If you were an ex smoker, do you have more empathy for current smokers? or do you dislike smokers more? Just wondering.... Myself, i'm an ex smoker, glad I quit, but I still have empathy for current smokers as I know what it's like to go through withdrawals. thanks! Maryscooking Posted September 10, 2013 #58 Share Posted September 10, 2013
And the casinos make the cruise lines money...so I can't believe (although it wouldn't bother me any) that any cruise line will ever eliminate smoking in the casino.
I'm almost positive that Celebrity has a non-smoking casino. And I have to say that here in Ohio, our casinos are non-smoking and they are making a ton of money. You have to look at the flip side - smokers might spend less time gambling if they can't smoke at the same time; but if the smoke is pushing away the non-smokers (and for me and my DH at least, it does), then the casino is losing non-smoker money. Given the shrinking numbers of smokers, and increased unwillingness of non-smokers to breathe second hand smoke, at some point, financially it will make sense to ban all casino smoking. ehfl Posted September 10, 2013 #59 Share Posted September 10, 2013 With the popularity of e-cigarettes, this should not be an issue for smokers. They can use the e-cigarettes if they want the smoking experience, but without ruining the experience for those around them.

They treat e-cigarettes the same. You can't smoke an e-cigarette anywhere you can't smoke a regular cigarette.

mlbcruiser Posted September 10, 2013 #64 Share Posted September 10, 2013 I have never smoked nor wanted to and will never start - for SURE. But we have friends who we have cruised w/before who are smokers, though they were courteous and stepped outside for a couple of min. after dinner or else smoked on their balcony. It did get in the way of which lines they could book. After hearing the new RCCL rules, I checked to make sure they had seen them when I heard e cigarettes were not allowed. One thing they wondered (and I wonder, too): just why aren't e cigarettes allowed? I'm just curious. Seems like a good solution to me unless there is something emitted from them. I wondered if maybe it was because they would be distinguishable from real ones, but hear that they don't really look like real cigarettes and some emit a blue glow or light at the tip. The only "smoke" is actualy vapor as well. Can anyone shed any light on why this type of cigarette is banned as well?

So they are not offensive in that manner. I would like to see a little more research/science on them though and I would think the users of them would as well. I mean what is in that "vapor" anyway? If they are proven to be harmless to bystanders I would say let people use them.
xxHadleyxx Posted September 10, 2013 #66 Share Posted September 10, 2013
Sorry - but there is no such thing as a "courteous smoker."
What a RUDE comment. I am a non smoker. I am thrilled with the new policy. I greatly dislike smoke and it sets off my child's asthma. There are many courteous people out there who smoke--maybe you missed them because you assumed they were non smokers since they were polite and did not smoke near you?
Cruiselines that currently permit balcony smoking: HAL, Carnival (except spa cabin balconies), NCL, Thomson. Lines that will soon prohibit balcony smoking: Disney as of November 15, 2013 P & O in February 2014 Cunard in April/May 2014, depending on the ship
Thanks. The PP I quoted had ruled out Carnival. I had forgotten about NCL and did not know HAL's policy. I guess smokers who want minimal restritions have 2-3 lines left (for the time being anyway--and very possibly a while if those lines get a bump in passengers from heavy smokers who sail them in order over other more restrictive lines). I like to think I have some empathy though. I do feel badly for anyone with an addiction that they can't kick. I always feel badly for those on the transatlantic flights we are on--where there truly is no option (for good reason) and they truly must deal with withdrawal. My empathy does not extend to thinking this policy change is anything other tan long overdue though. No one has to go through withdrawal on their cruise (not that anyone has to take a cruise anyway!)--there are still paces to smoke. At most, it is a hassle for the smoker to have to go to an appropriate area to smoke. I don't have a lot of empathy (any really) for someone who would whine about that hassle knowing full well the dangers that second hand smoke pose for those around them who are not addicted. Wanting to put someone else at risk for health issues to avoid a hassle? No, those people are not among the MANY courteous smokers out there. My favorite machines (life of luxury progressives) seem to always be located in the smoking area. Can't wait for the announcement because I really think its only a matter of time. Casinos in Ontario, Canada are non-smoking. The smokers freaked out initially but they got used to it.
