Making calls from sea

About to board Allure on Sunday - have a sick family member having surgery on a "at sea day" - does anyone know how much it is to make calls back to the States at sea on the ship?

I beleive it is $8 per minute - internet might be a better option....

If you are planning to use your cell phone you will want to check with your carrier for their rates. The cell coverage while at sea will be extremely expensive as it goes via sattelite (Cellular at Sea is what was on my phone while roaming).

 

If you use the ship phones it is $7.95 USD per minute.

I know AT&T is $2.49 a minute from a cell phone. But make sure your data is turned off. I bring a old brick phone with me so I don't have to worry about the international roaming on data. Hope this helps. Happy Cruising!!!!!!

Both verizon and AT&T charge $2.49/minute while using the ship's cell tower. They charge $.50/text sent. If you decide to use your cell phone which is the least expensive, be sure to have international calling turned on. It is done by your carrier and is free. It allows your cell phone to be used outside the country.

2 years ago DH and I cruised on the Explorer to the Caribbean. All of this had been worked out with support from family. I was taking a break from 2 years of solo caregiving of my Mother.

 

Mom taught me to worry so I called from land or with my cell phone when on land. Our at sea days I called from the ship. WAY too easy. Just pickup and dial.

 

Yes it was not cheap. But Mom was worth it and I didn't worry.

 

DH did turn green one night when I asked about the dog at $7.95 p/minute!!!
