Just found your post and am enjoying it so much. Can't wait for more, especially your pictures. One question, were there guardrails on the Road to Hana?

 

There were guard rails in some spots, but if you continued on the road past Hana (and didn't turn around like you were supposed to), there were areas without rails. Here's one area without:

Hey, sorry we never met up onboard. I had lots of trouble with my email from the minute we left Newark, so I didn't get all of yours until later. We had a great time overall...hope you did too. I was disappointed with the rain going by the NaPali coast, but the weather was great for the most part.

Thanks! You will love the cruise! I read all posts regarding POA and Hawaii I could before we left, so I had a "game plan" most days. I would have had no idea what to do without cruise critic. I downloaded a few driving maps (one for Hilo, and a couple for Oahu) and they were helpful. I will finish my review tomorrow or Sunday hopefully (getting back into the swing of daily life and Christmas shopping has gotten in the way;)).

We started our day with breakfast in Cagneys then headed down to rental car shuttle line. We learned our lesson on Monday, and were not about to let anyone cut in front of us today;). The lady running the shuttles today was very alert, and could see that chaos could ensue shortly, so she began assigning numbers to people as the showed up "you're number 1, you're number 2", etc for each rental shuttle line. We got to airport in about 10 minutes, and got the car fairly quickly. We got directions to the volcano (very easy to get to from the airport), and made a quick stop at McDonalds for coffee and breakfast sandwiches (girls didn't get up in time for Cagneys), then we were off. We paid the $10 to get into the park, and followed the road on the map I had printed. We stopped at the second tourist stop (the first was full of busses and people so we kept going). We walked down the short trail to the edge to see the steam vents. I didn't expect it to smell like it did (sulfur), and I didn't expect it to be as cold as it was, but it was amazing. We left there and continued on, but I was disappointed to find out that the Crater Rim Road was closed just past the museum, so we turned around and headed back to the Chain of Craters Road. We drove all the way down to the bottom. It was very interesting to see all the dried lava everywhere (it looked like the scenes from "Under the Dome"). We bought some tshirts and drinks at the little shop there (it was hot down there :)). My girls weren't as impressed with all this as I was (spoiled I guess;)), but the younger one did walk the road with me to where lava crossed over and closed it (she appreciated who paid for this trip:D).

We stopped at Walmart on the way back to drop off the car to get some soda and snacks for the room. We also got some cheap souvenirs there for friends back home. We got to the lot we were supposed to drop car off at but no one was around. We waited in the hot sun for about 10 minutes before someone showed up and drove us back to the port. We sat in the sun on our balcony watching to rowing crews practice behind us and got some amusement at the guard on the pier as he kept blowing his whistle at them telling them they couldn't come so close. It turned into a beautiful day (we were told that Hilo was the rainiest of all our stops, but we didn't have any rain all day). We stayed on our balcony for sail away then went back to Liberty for dinner.

We had no plans for this day. I had read that there were touristy gift shops right near the pier, so we planned on getting our souvenirs here. We woke up to a beautiful sunny day so we decided to just hang out on the ship by the pool for an hour or two and then get off. We really enjoyed just laying around doing nothing (since there are no sea days on this itinerary).

We grabbed some lunch at the buffet and decided to head into town. The tender was very quick and there was a tiny beach right at the end of the pier. We went towards the right as one of the waitresses at the pool sent us on a mission to find the bartender she "likes" at a restaurant there :). We did some shopping and stopped in the restaurant for a few drinks and some appetizers.

There is an ABC store there where we got some more drinks and snacks, and this store, which had tshirts and such. We accomplished what we wanted to today...sun and souvenirs.:)

My husband booked a golf excursion last night to leave at 8 am. We had a quick breakfast while the girls slept and then he left. The girls and I were just going to get the rental car and find a beach to hang out at for a few hours since DH would be done shortly after noon. The shuttle driver pointed out where overnight parking was on the way by (which we did not need since we were only keeping car for one day.) I got the car without any incidents, but had some trouble finding a beach:(...seems none of us could read a map :o!! There were several beaches listed on the map, but we couldn't seem to locate any. We did drive by the place DH was golfing at (several times). There is a beach right near the port by the Marriott but I was looking for something a little more remote. Well, it was 11:30 before I knew it so we just parked at that beach and decided to wait for DH to call for us to get him (at least I knew I could find that!!)

We picked DH up a little after noon, and headed north to find one of these beaches that I couldn't seem to find!! (He was telling me where to go and I kept saying "we already did that"...very difficult, but I guess we didn't drive far enough.) We found this little "beach" right off the main road, so pulled in. There was only one other car in the little lot. There were 2 port-a-potties there (both very disgusting...but served their purpose;)!). This little beach was perfect for just sunbathing for an hour or two. A couple other people came and went, but we pretty much had the place to ourselves. It was relaxing.

We stayed at the beach for a couple hours then went for a drive. We don't really know where we were, but it was beautiful (as all of Hawaii is :D). Took some pictures along the way. (I think we were in a state park :confused:).

We headed back towards the port and stopped at the mall. We all had a drink at the bar then me and younger daughter shopped around for a bit while DH and older daughter stayed for a few more drinks;). Dropped the girls back at the ship, then DH and I drove car back to the airport. We grabbed dinner at the Cadillac Diner (loved the chicken tenders and fries) and went to bed early.

You're welcome. It has taken much longer to write than I anticipated, but the holidays and work got in the way:(

We grabbed a quick breakfast at Cagneys while the girls slept. We just planned on getting some sun on the beach today. We took the trolley to the mall (I know...we could have walked but we had bags with towels, drinks, snacks, etc). My daughters both rented standup paddleboards at the little shop by the Marriott. They both did very well seeing as it was their first time. My younger daughter got caught a little too far to the right (near the bigger waves and rocks), but she eventually made it back to where she was supposed to be. I think it cost $25 for an hour (or two??...can't remember exactly.) We staked out a spot in the sun before they got their boards. It was a gorgeous sunny day. I had some work to do unfortunately, and couldn't get wifi on the beach, so I walked across the street to the mall and bought some drinks in the coffee shop and used their free wifi for 45 minutes or so. (The AC felt good in there as it was hot out :).)

We stayed at beach until around 1 pm then walked back to the ship. My girls had left a little sooner to do some last minute shopping and took the trolley back. I waited outside the gate for them to go to our balcony so I could take their picture there. (I do it on every cruise!). I got to talk to a nice man who had to finish his drink outside the gate before going back onboard. The girls finally came out, I took a couple pictures, and headed through security to get back onboard (cut it very close to the 2pm all aboard time).

We cleaned up a bit and went to the private latitudes sail-away party on the bow of the ship (deck 7). By the time we got there, we couldn't get near a railing, so just stood in the middle. The mimosas and champagne were flowing!!:D. We listened to the CD Marky Mark and the latitudes representative (can't think of her name now) speak for a few minutes, and left after a short time. (No reason to stay there when we had our own huge balcony to watch sail-away from). We were excited to see the NaPali coast.

We spent a couple hours enjoying our "sea day"...or few hours of daytime sailing we actually had. I did miss having a sea day on this itinerary as I love just relaxing on the balcony or near the pool smelling the barbeque and listening to the band. It was beautiful out as we sailed off, but after a couple hours, it started pouring...couldn't see the NaPali coast at all!!:(

We showered after we realized we weren't going to see the NaPali coast. We had reservations for Teppanyaki (the only specialty restaurant we ate at this cruise other than Cagney's for breakfast/lunch). The chef was very entertaining, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves at both tables. I became very nauseous after eating my soup and seaweed salad (not really sure why but doubt it had anything to do with the food). I could not eat anything else after that. I think the chef was offended but I told him I would take mine to go. (I got sick shortly after returning to our room :(). I don't know what was wrong but felt okay other than the nausea. Oh well... we just packed up and went to bed early.

We kept all our luggage with us (mainly because we were just too tired...and I was too sick...to bother packing at night.) My daughters finished packing up this morning and we headed to Cagney's for our last breakfast on the POA:(. We got there at 8:15 (8:30 was supposed to be when it closed, but people were still coming in after us.) We said our goodbye to the concierge Tom, and gave him his tip (even though we hardly saw him and only had him make 2 dinner reservations for us). We had a relaxing breakfast (no one seemed to be in a hurry to get any of us out of the restaurant, although I'm sure they were). We had left our bags in our room (told our room steward we would take them with us when we left for breakfast but he said it was fine to keep them in room until we were finished). We got all our belongings from the room and just walked right off the ship...probably around 9:30. We waited outside for a shuttle bus to take us to rental car. It was very hot out there...in full sun...no shade anywhere so I stayed in building while DH waited for shuttle. It took about 15-20 minutes for it to arrive (I saw one leave just before we got out there :(). We rented an SUV so we could carry all our luggage around. Our flight wasn't leaving until 4pm, so we had time to kill. We decided to go to Pearl Harbor even though we figured it would be very busy as it was Dec 7, the anniversary of the bombing.) We got there fairly quickly and it was hot!!! We got some pictures with Navy officers (my brother was in the Navy, so this was for him;).) We couldn't go to the USS Arizona as all the tickets were sold out already, but that was fine with us. There were some tents set up where I think they were going to do a memorial service at some point. We bought many nice gifts in the shops, and took a ton of pictures. There was a man ringing a bell and reading names of the victims of the bombing. My younger daughter got to ring the bell for a few minutes...it was emotional just being there on that day. I am glad we went.

We drove around after that to find a place for lunch. We found a nice place on the water, but the wait was too long, so we ended up at Subway. We found a nice little park and saw the POA across the harbor!! Time to take some more pictures! We could hear the CD welcoming people aboard...made me sad to think our vacation was over :(.
