Beds in Balcony Stateroom

I think they may be described as Queen size but to my eye they looked more like what I consider a King Size

They look more like 6' than 5' to me anyway.

We are used to a 6' bed at home and the space felt very similar.

In the US a bed which is 60 x 80 inches (152 x 203 cm.) is known as a Queen bed. I believe that in the UK this same bed is called a King bed.

What we in the US call a King bed in the UK is called a Super King.

So, to eliminate confusion, it might be best to ask what the dimensions of the bed are, and you can see why the poster who saw the Queen bed said that it looks like a King bed.

Several cruise lines advertise that their beds are "queen size" (for examples: http://disneycruise.disney.go.com/ships-activities/ships/dream/staterooms/, http://www.princess.com/learn/ships/kp/staterooms/index.jsp and http://www.ncl.com/cruise-ship/sky/staterooms/2/inside). Since these are US based, I would expect them to be equivalent to a US "queen" in size.

A standard American King bed is 76" wide by 80" long (there's also a California King 72" x 84"), while a Queen is 60" by 80". When the two cabin beds are pushed together, they seem to me to be wider than a queen but not as wide as a king. They definitely seem shorter than both; the corners are rounded on all of the ships we've been on, which cuts out some length space except in the middle.
