What to do on Nassau

Last time we were at Nassau (about 3yrs ago) we booked a room at the Comfort Suites which is across the road from The Atlantis, this gave us passes to Atlantis for the day and was MUCH cheaper than going direct or booking through Carnival. I am not sure if you can still do this but worth looking into. It also depends on how many going as you pay for a room for 4, so if you have less going it may not work out cheaper.

We have also done the Segways in Nassau and that was A LOT of fun.

There is a Port of Call Thread on the Bahamas you might want to check out! We were just there in the beginning of January and because we have been there many times we decided to do a private tour. We had a GREAT time and the 2 hour tour was only $25pp and the 3 hr tour is $35pp and the 5 hr tour that includes lunch is $60 pp. Check out the Port of Call threads, loads of info there!!! Have fun!

Our friends went to Atlantis, thought it was overrated. We went to Blue Lagoon, played with the Sea Lions, and loved it so much, we specifically picked our itinerary to go back to BL in May! So they went to Atlantis, don't really care to go back. We went to BL, we can't wait to go back. Half our group is signed up again for the sea lions, a few of us observers so we can go to the island with em, we look forward to the fresh made conch fritters, the water slides etc.

If you want to skip BL, I would recommend the Seahorse catamaran and snorkel half day tour. It was WONDERFUL, and we saw lots of fish.

If you don't book something on Nassau, you might stay on the ship, because right near the port, it doesn't really pan out unless you know where you are going. Junkanoo beach is near by and our other friends went there and played volleyball, but you won't see a lot of marine life at a public beach.

We liked Nassau :-). Definitely check out the port of call forum. We opted to do a carriage ride and then printed out some maps and walking tour directions that we took with us. Great day sightseeing and we enjoyed ourselves.

Next cruise: Carnival Breeze June 2014

One of our best tours ever was in Nassau doing a Segway tour. We went through a private vendor for only $65 pp. They met us at the port and took us to a ranch where we were given lessons on how to work them. We were newbies. It was shockingly easy to operate them. ;) Then we took them through the counryside and along the beach where we were given cold drinks and time to take a dip in the ocean. It was so much better than going through the city on sidewalks. The countryside and beach were gorgeous. :D Just look it up in the ports of call section of the boards for Nassau. I did a review of our tour and there's lots of discussions about this there.

One block from the port are many jewerly stores, souvenir shops and restaurants.

If you want to check out some beaches within walking distance of the ship, just turn right after leaving the port and follow the road to Junkanoo Beach (about a ten minute walk). Here is a nice beach to go swimming. Here they also have a few small bars that offer good beer and drink deals. If you continue walking there are some smaller beaches that are quieter with few people. Continuing on are some small restaurant shacks that serve very good fresh food. Continuing on you will then see some larger seafood restaurants.

I usually do the ports on foot and this is what I do in Nassau. I always have a good time.

A good, cheap option is Ardastra Gardens. Its a small zoo, home of the "World Famous Marching Flamingos" The Jitney bus will drop you off about 3 blocks away at the Fish Fry area which is a great place to grab an inexpensive lunch.

Stay on board and you will stay safe. The Behamas is an extremely dangerous place.

Not true if you stay in the tourist areas and don't venture out where you don't belong. It's no more dangerous than any other busy city.

Like anywhere else, don't flash your cash and jewelry, don't get stupid drunk and be aware of your surroundings. There's plenty of police in the tourist/dock area.. both in uniform and undercover.

You have no idea do you. Ppl were robbed at gun point in Senior Frogs. Check out CruiseLaw.com there are links to Behman news papers that talks about just how bad it really is. There are multiple crimes especially against tourists. All with guns or weapons. Atlantis any tourists spot that is not completely walled off is under attack.

I live here.. I know what's been happening. with the number of tourist that visit here on a daily basis, the # of crimes against them are miniscule. And those that were targeted were mainly off on their own

As I said.. this could be any major city with a high population.

I can give u a link to similar links in my hometown paper as well. Crime is everywhere.

Atlantis is not immune.. it just has it's own security and police are paid off to now get involved. I've been robbed twice on Atlantis property.. had a hell of a time getting a police report for insurance.

This could happen in any big city or even your local mall.

Keep in mind those number are for all of the bahamas (all 700 island and Cays..) not just Nassau.

Don't worry, Lucky Granny, you are in the right place. :) This thread was originally posted on the Carnival forum but it has now been moved to the Bahamas forum. There is no forum specifically for Nassau.

I understand what you mean about any place you go has crime. But for example I live in south fla. There are about 5 6 times as many people and understanding it all islands and what not. But I read the paper over there and I get the general consensus that it's things like this are talking place in areas where the population is dense. FreePort and Nassau. Now I am just estimating this but from what I have read it's like 70% more likely to happen those areas. When I was saying about walled off area I was talking about the secure cruise area. It just seems like the % to things like number of violent crimes. Shorting, murder, armed robbery. Ect. To number of people who live there is especially high.

The crime in the bahamas is 99% against each other. Turf wars, drug wars, cheating wives and lovers etc. Even some of the "tourist" crimes have been linked back to some deal that went wrong, or someone looking for drugs at 4am in the wrong part of town.

Cruisers don't really have the time or opportunity to get involved in these things. Since crime became an issue .. the gov't has stepped up patrols, restricted areas to some outside elements, and improved areas and visibility to ensure safety.

It's those who feel they are invincible that get into trouble here... they party with the wrong element or want to see the "over the hill" areas.

We warned visitors time and time again that there is a seedy side of town, and it's not safe. Still, we have those who think it doesn't pertain to them.

Yes, we have had a few muggings in the past, but as I said, the gov't has taken steps to ensure safety. You can even ask for an escort from a club if need be.

My family home on Long Island, NY is a small quiet summer town where we don't even lock our doors. Last holiday season, we had a shoot out at a local Game Stop and a smash and grab in broad daylight at our local jewelry store. We had a home invasion where a family was tied up and pistol whipped. It's not the norm.. we are not moving. We let our police and security handle it. This summer we will be inundated with visitors coming to the beaches and clubs. Same as every season. They cause more of a ruckus than the locals.
