Not my idea of Smart Casual

I have said much the same in the past, however we flew to Azura in February and only used 20 of our 23 kg each. Just had to cut the OH down to 8 pairs of shoes ;)

We also flew to the Caribbean in Feb and like you only used 20k thanks to buying some ultra light weight luggage:)

I might be wrong - but on P&O I thought that even in the buffet area on smart casual nights shorts were a no-no.

I appreciate my opinion probably isn't very popular but I think that if the cruise line (or hotel come to that) operates a dress code then it should be adhered to - even in the buffet areas. You don't have to be dressed up to the nines on smart casual nights. If you don't like the dress code then don't book! The other thing I would say is that on fly-cruises I think there should be only 2 dress codes - formal and smart casual. With the reduction in luggage allowance by the airlines I don't think it fair that men should have to pack another jacket for "smart" evenings.

Bells

They are a no-no, shorts of any type are not part of the evening casual code, however on Ventura you might see people dressed in shorts eating in the evening. The seating around the covered pool is not part of the buffet but is 'open deck'. If someone dressed appropriately brought the food out to you it would be OK.

You can wear what you like in the buffet - albeit I can't remember seeing anyone in shorts

But you don't have to adhere to the dress code if you're only intending to go to the buffet. You will if you intend using the bars

We sailed with Ventura in 2013 and have just got off Holland America's Noordam today. Whereas we enjoy P&O and HAL in equal measure, there is a question I would like to ask on this forum. We were really surprised on Noordam how in the Lido restaurant (the Plaza on P&O) at dinner in the evening, people were turning up in their shorts - and the same shorts they appeared to have worn all day. We questioned the restaurant manager and he said once people were on the ship, there was nowhere else except the ship in the evening to eat, and if they turned up in shorts - they couldn't be turned away. Don't flame me, but IMO that's not Smart Casual. So - is this the case with P&O these days? Are people turning up in their shorts in the Plaza at dinner?

We were on Ventura in Caribbean in March and saw quite a few gentlemen being turned away from the evening buffet if they were wearing shorts, and so they should.

Along the same lines, we were intrigued to see people wearing black tie on the formal nights eating in the plaza

Seemed odd when being in black tie permitted them to use the formal dining venues

I thought that was odd as well, also tucking into a pizza in Cafe Jardin on Oceana.

Of course there is nothing to stop them from wearing black tie every night if they wish.

Don't worry, the dress code wars seem to be a thing of the past. If i wanted to be controversal about it I could say that as Britannia is only going to have 2 dress codes like Ventura the wars must be over, with the casual side the winner. Or maybe an armistice with advantageous terms for the casual side :) P&O splitting their fleet into 2 groups helps as well.

It is interesting to see what is happening elsewhere with one specialist restaurant formal every night and no formal anywhere else.

Hello :D

Can I ask what are the two dress codes for ventura and Britannia please

Evening Casual and Black Tie. Usually black tie on 2 nights per week.

On the P&O site check out the 'how can we help......life on board' tab

Some people look smart in casual clothes, some don't look smart whatever they put on! Just because someone wears a long dress, or a dinner suit, it does not necessarily mean they look smart!

But they have made the effort to follow the dress code as required.;)

Why make the effort if evening casual dress is OK and you are happy with wearing it  ;);)

 Sorry- I don't understand. Do you mean that people don't make an effort to dress appropriately if it is evening casual dress?

Perhaps they wanted to move on elsewhere afterwards? my husband was discreetly told he had to leave the bar in the Atrium on Azura as it was jacket required night!

On the subject of dress code - does anyone know on a four nighter on Oriana if there will be a "smart jacket required" night? Or will it be 3 smart casual and 1 formal?

I have been trying to get into my cruise personaliser to look but I can't get in

If it's the 23 Oct one then it's 1F and 3SC.

Thanks very much for that Brian. We're on the 6th Nov one so I see we do have a smart jacket one! We both enjoy dressing up for the formal nights but as others have said i do think the "smart jacket" one is a bit of a faff!!

Thanks again tho :)

I don't really understand why standards of dress should be at all contentious.

I relate a cruise ship to a hotel. Hotels have different standards that can vary enormously. If you choose to stay in a smart hotel guests would be expected to adhere to some sort of standard of dress especially in the bars and dinning rooms. If you stay in a guest house or B&B then the standard expected might be slightly less.

Why don't people do their research before they book much the same as you would when looking at the star rating of a hotel?

If you don't want to dress smartly for dinner then stay at a hotel/ship with a more relaxed attitude to dress but don't moan about being asked to conform if you do decide to stay at the Ritz, and don't spoil it for everyone else who does appreciate a smart appearance. :)

I book a cruise for the sake of the itinery not what the sicopanths will be wearing

Unfortunately that is exactly what happens with some people, they don't understand the meaning of the wording evening casual and think it means they can slouch around in anything..shame really..perhaps they can't read? ;)

I've been reading this thread with interest. We have only been on one cruise, with NCL, so there was no dress code as such. I am considering booking a cruise with P&O next year on the Britannia. I presume the dress code is for the evening only and that you can go into the buffet during the day in shorts.

You certainly can. Not swimwear, though, and you've got to wear a top, e.g. t-shirt, or polo.

The evening dress code usually applies from 6pm (or thereabouts) onwards.
